Mezzanine in the corridor: features and options in the interior

Making doors for mezzanines with your own hands

To do this, first of all you need to decide on the size of the future doors. Keep in mind that the facade must be overhead, that is, it must be larger than the internal opening of the mezzanine.

If the mezzanine is located in the corridor

or is adjacent to a wall perpendicular to the plane of the closed doors (see photo, right side), then you need to provide a gap between the open position of the door and the wall, otherwise the door simply will not open. The photo shows a neat bar installed. As an option.

Having decided on the sizes, we go to a store or base that sells frame profiles. Here you can order not only the material, but also its cutting to your dimensions, as well as a groove for surahs - special fastenings for the frame profile. Cutting and grooving is done on special machines, and most likely it will not be possible to do it at home. But such work is not expensive, and assembling doors from ready-made elements is not at all difficult. In addition to the cut frame profile and fillings, we will need suras (aka dowels) - special plastic fasteners - “pegs”, 2 for each frame joint, that is, for one quadrangular frame - 8 pieces. And also PVA glue, silicone sealant, sealant (if the insert is glass), furniture wax to match the profile.

We bring everything home and start assembling. We coat the ends of the profiles with PVA glue and join the first corner, hammering suras into the prepared grooves. If the joint does not turn out smooth, it doesn’t matter. Using a hammer, always through felt, so as not to damage the coating of the profiles, we carefully trim the frame, achieving a beautiful joint. We apply silicone to the grooves and install the filling. Similarly, we assemble the opposite corner of the mezzanine door. We coat the groove with silicone and assemble the entire frame.

Please note that the insert should not fit tightly, “pull”, otherwise after some time the suras will be cut off and the facade will crumble. There must be a slight backlash

Each profile has its own tolerance for insertion; you can (and should) find it out in the store and, if cutting the filling is done there, take it into account when cutting in the store.

Leave until the glue and sealant dry completely.

Then we treat all joints with furniture wax. Wax protects uncoated MDF from moisture and also masks minor irregularities in the profile joints. You can also use it to seal damage, cracks, and small chips in the profile during door operation.

If glass is used as an insert, then a special sealant is used to fix it (the glass is thinner than the MDF filling). It is installed on the back of the glass.

This is how frame facades from MDF are assembled, quickly and easily. All that remains is to cut in the hinges, install the handles, install the doors on the mezzanine and admire the result.

How to make a mezzanine in the hallway with your own hands| Bestdoska.ru

May 29, 2013

Knowing how to make a mezzanine in the hallway with your own hands, the apartment owner will be able to arrange a container for a variety of things. At the same time, a correctly executed mezzanine structure will fit perfectly into the interior and will not make the ceiling visually lower.

A mezzanine is a cabinet-shaped superstructure that is mounted directly under the ceiling. In essence, the design consists of a shelf-bottom to which the doors are attached to the frame. This structure is built in such a way that the remaining sides are limited by the ceiling and walls. It is recommended that the thickness of the bottom of the mezzanine should not be less than 30 centimeters if relatively heavy objects are planned to be stored inside it.

A mezzanine can be arranged in any room; it will be at home in the kitchen and bedroom, but most often the owners think about how to make a spacious mezzanine in the corridor, which is the most natural place for this design. In particular, a common option is a mezzanine above the door.

Models of mezzanines can be either simple or angular. The corner version is made in a triangular shape. The choice of superstructure configuration is up to the owner of the premises, but both options are quite capacious

The depth of the shelf is not limited; it is important that residents can take items located in the very depths of the mezzanine. The height of the structure most often does not exceed half a meter

How to make a mezzanine in the corridor, preliminary steps

Next we will talk about how to make a mezzanine with your own hands. The mezzanine is easiest to create if the hallway has a narrow shape. First of all, you need to find out if there is any wiring in this place; to do this, use a detector or an indicator screwdriver. In the absence of these tools, you should take a closer look at the areas of the wall above the switches, since in general the wiring is routed to the top. The structure is most often attached to long metal corners; it is necessary to purchase two such parts.

Before you make a mezzanine with your own hands, you should determine which design you prefer, with or without doors. The open mezzanine means a major simplification of the entire operation and saves time. Otherwise, you need to know exactly how to make mezzanine doors.

Sequencing

  1. First of all, the place where it is planned to install the mezzanine is marked, indicating exactly where the bottom panel will be placed and how the storage walls will be located.
  2. Holes are drilled in the wall at the level of the mark showing the lower boundary of the bottom of the structure; the distance between them should be 10 centimeters.
    Having made holes for the mezzanine in the corridor using a drill, you will be faced with the need to carry out a full-scale cleaning of the room. This can only be avoided if there is a switched-on vacuum cleaner under the device.
  3. Next, aluminum guides are attached, which should be positioned exactly according to the building level.
  4. After completing the bottom of the shelf, it is possible to use various materials.
    Often the bottom of the mezzanine is made of plywood, but this material can sag under the weight of the contents. Therefore, it is preferable to use boards, both regular and floor and wooden lining. It should be remembered that the walls in houses are in most cases uneven, so it is advisable to make all the planks so that they fit exactly into the space intended for them. This design will look best. The boards must be completely dry!
  5. The elements of the bottom of the structure are placed on the corners; the very last board should be given a shape that coincides with the edges of the corners. Each of the strips must be secured with four self-tapping screws.
  6. After this, the bottom of the mezzanine is finished either by painting, or by varnishing, or by covering it with plastic panels.
  7. Now the door frame structure is being made; it is made of narrow planks.
  8. Next, it is attached to the walls, giving the door frame a configuration that matches their shape
  9. Finally, the doors are attached to the hinges in the door frame. Doors can be hinged or sliding. If the mezzanine is open, then you will not need doors.
  10. If desired, you can line the mezzanine, for example, by finishing the structure with PVC panels.

The shelf is ready, now you have additional space for storing accessories of a wide variety of types. With the help of a mezzanine, you will occupy a previously unused volume of the room, thereby saving space.

How to make a mezzanine with your own hands, doors for the mezzanine, making cabinets

The easiest way to build hanging storage is in a narrow corridor. Before you make your own mezzanine, do a little research. Using an indicator screwdriver or detector, check for wiring in the walls

If you do not have devices that detect the presence of cables, pay attention to the switches. Electrical communications from them ideally go straight up

Usually shelves are hung on long metal corners; you will need 2 of them. Drill holes in the walls in 10 cm increments. If during installation of the mezzanine in the hallway

If you are using a regular drill, ask someone to hold a running vacuum cleaner under the device while drilling. This will save you from having to do major cleaning.

Attach the aluminum guides and level them to the building level. We continue the production of mezzanines by decorating the bottom. Sometimes the bottom wall of the shelf is made of plywood, but under the weight of numerous cans, clamshells and boxes it can bend. The best choice for these purposes is wooden lining, floorboard or ordinary board 3-5 cm thick. Considering that in almost any apartment the walls are curved, adjust each plank to the width of the corridor separately. This will help make the design of the mezzanine in the apartment as neat as possible.

Place the finished parts on the corners, cut the last board lengthwise in accordance with the edges of the corners. Secure the wooden elements with self-tapping screws, four for each plank. Line the bottom with plastic panels or paint them to match the color of the walls with paint or varnish. photographs demonstrate the approximate design well.

.

Assemble a door frame from several narrow strips and screw it to the walls, first leveling it. Place the mezzanine doors on the hinges and screw on the handles. Doors can be made of MDF, chipboard, as well as matte translucent plastic or glass.

Mezzanines are small cabinets located under the ceiling in an apartment. This interior solution is an ideal option for small rooms in which there is always a lack of storage space. Typically, cabinets are located in the hallway, hallway or kitchen above the door. Mezzanines can be easily made with your own hands. It won't take much time or money.

At the same time, it is very important to pay attention to the fact that the doors for the mezzanines fit well into the overall design of the apartment. If you already have storage space and want to update the interior, you can simply change this part

Mezzanine in the bedroom

Very often, in order to save free space, a mezzanine is installed in the bedroom.

wardrobe multiple options, play up the mezzanine floor

  • The first is to move the bed upstairs and create a dressing room underneath it. In this case, you need to choose lightweight bed models. It is best to limit yourself to one base for a mattress with orthopedic slats. If, after installing the bed, there is still free space on the site, do not try to fill the void with unnecessary pieces of furniture that will create additional load. Decorate the space with a houseplant or floor lamp. Attach a mirror to the wall, place a small wall shelf under it and place a pouf in front of the mirror. The improvised dressing table is ready! You can take a seat with a light bean bag chair;
  • The second is to make a dressing room on top, and leave the bed on the ground floor. In this case, it is also worth thinking about the weight of the storage cabinet. Instead, it is better to create a system of hanging shelves, if the wall partition is strong enough, and then hide the contents behind a beautiful screen. Or install a sliding system;
  • The third is the best option if there is a need to fit the bedroom of an adult and a child within one small room. The parent's bed is located on the mezzanine floor, and under it there is a children's area;
  • The fourth is to arrange a sleeping area for guests. This is true if you have relatives or friends staying over from time to time. But immediately evaluate how comfortable such co-location will be for you.

The advantage of this arrangement will be relative isolation from other residential areas of the room. If you arrange a bedroom above a kitchen unit, there is a high probability that neither you nor your guests will be able to fully relax, since constant sounds and characteristic smells from the kitchen will disturb you.

Cabinets with mezzanines in the hallway: useful nuances

According to designers, hanging products, in particular mezzanines, should not be placed in random places. To do this you need to follow some rules.

They are:

  1. The hanging cabinet should not block the access to the door or window opening.
  2. When choosing the location of the cabinet, you should definitely check whether the walls can support the additional structure.
  3. The choice of location of the mezzanine should not change the room. For example, if the cabinet is placed incorrectly, the room can visually become narrow, small or low. This nuance must be taken into account.
  4. If the apartment has very high ceilings, it is better to use a gallery mezzanine. It surrounds the room on all three sides. A gallery-type mezzanine is perfect for arranging a library.

Mezzanines must be located at a height of 2 m relative to the floor, so they will not interfere with people passing by.

The light from a lamp located in the room or from a lamp hanging on the wall will not be enough.

In this case you need:

  • Install an additional lamp near the mezzanine so that the rays of light can illuminate its interior;
  • Place a light source in the cabinet. To prevent mechanical damage to the lamp when arranging things, it must be equipped with a lampshade.

In general, you can play with lighting as your imagination allows. Change colors, directions, brightness. All this will affect the overall perception.

Unusual options for using a mezzanine floor

Besides these obvious ways to use extra space, there are some more unusual ideas.

  • Young people who like to spend time in the company of friends will certainly appreciate the idea of arranging a mini-bar on the mezzanine. It is most convenient if it is located above the kitchen area. All you need is to install a bar counter and purchase chairs. An optional but useful element will be a small refrigerator. Don't forget about a rack for placing glasses and glasses and several shelves for bottles;
  • If you have a large family or company and you like to spend time playing various games, you can use the free space for these purposes. You don't need a lot of furniture. All you need is a coffee table, a soft rug and comfortable cushions to sit on. You will also need a place to store the games. In a similar way, you can adapt the place for video games;
  • Home greenhouse. Lovers of indoor plants often complain about the lack of meth on window sills or for installing special stands. You have the opportunity to create a personal green corner in your apartment on the second floor. But in this case it is necessary to take care of additional lighting. Such a green area will become the central element of the interior and instantly enliven the atmosphere. At the same time, the greenhouse can also be your relaxation area if you place a comfortable chair among the plants;
  • If you are engaged in any kind of creativity or handicraft, then it is advisable to use the mezzanine as a personal workshop.

Sliding wardrobe with mezzanine in the hallway: a unique addition to the furniture

The mezzanine for the wardrobe is made using the same technology as the stationary product. However, there are some rules that must be followed.

You can make your hallway beautiful and practical with the help of a modern and functional mezzanine.

Let's look at them:

  • The mezzanine should completely match the stylistic design of the furniture. Otherwise, it will not fit into the interior and will look superfluous.
  • The material of manufacture must be identical or at least similar to the wardrobe.
  • If chipboard is used to make the cabinet, make your choice in favor of laminated one. The chipboard should be fastened using metal corners.
  • If a mirror is installed in the wardrobe, then you can also decorate the mezzanine doors with a mirror. Thus, it is possible to achieve harmony in the perception of the mezzanine with the wardrobe.

For those who are especially lazy, you don’t have to make a mezzanine yourself, but buy it in a store. Fortunately, today’s new furniture products make our eyes run wild. For example, the mezzanine for the Alla hallway is a universal option that can be placed either on a furniture set or attached to the wall structures of the apartment.

Selection according to the style of the apartment

The mezzanine will fit into the interior if it matches the color, texture, and design.

Classic requires massiveness and good quality; for this style, only mobile modules are appropriate - extensions of cabinets.

Provence – warm pastel colors and small floral prints. It is appropriate to decorate open or closed structures using the decoupage technique to match the walls. For an open design, original wicker baskets are selected and things are stored in them.

Country style involves the use of natural wood for decoration. A mezzanine made of clapboard would be appropriate above the doors. Corner furniture will fit.

Loft – harmony of lines and free space. Only structures built into wardrobes are suitable.

Minimalism requires conciseness in everything. No pretentiousness, convenience and pragmatism. The structures should not stand out, they should be a continuation of the furniture or walls - the doors and ends are finished as on the walls.

How to make a mezzanine from plasterboard

If after the repair there are pieces of a metal profile and a small remainder of drywall, that can also be used. It is enough to assemble a frame for fastening the bottom and make some kind of mortgages for fastening the facade.

Be careful - there is usually wiring in the adjacent wall. It would be a good idea to “ring” the intended drilling locations with a special tool so as not to touch the wires.

The assembled frame can be sheathed not only with plasterboard, but also with any light sheet material. For example, thin plywood or thick fiberboard.

After covering the mezzanine frame with wallpaper, all that remains is to make the façade part. There are two opening options - a folding top or a side-hinged one. The facades are matched to the overall style of the kitchen; the easiest way is to order them from the same material as the doors. For example, MDF or acrylic.

In any case, you will need to lay a narrow strip to which furniture hinges for false panels will be attached. In the first case, there will be one vertical plank, in the second - two horizontal ones on both sides of the mezzanine.

The concept of “mezzanine floor”

In the special standard “Residential multi-apartment buildings” - SP 54.13330.2011 there is a clear definition of what is called a mezzanine floor.

This is an internal area, which is located within one floor and does not occupy more than 40% of the area of the room.

The main feature of the mezzanine is its compactness and comparative lightness, as well as the small thickness of the ceiling. This leads to the following advantages of this design:

  • Maximum rational use of free space;
  • The effect of visual correction of an elongated room due to its division;
  • Interiors with mezzanines look modern and spacious.

The disadvantages include:

  • Limitation on the weight of placed items. It is not recommended to load even the strongest welded metal structures. In view of this, some restrictions are imposed on the choice of pieces of furniture and their quantity. You should choose the most simple and light furniture and limit yourself to only truly necessary items;
  • Not everyone can afford to install a fence on the mezzanine using noise-absorbing partitions due to their high cost. Therefore, such superstructures are often not isolated from another residential area as a full-fledged room. This may cause some inconvenience;
  • Along with the ability to increase the usable area of the room, the mezzanine, due to its design features, will also conceal the space of the first floor. An integral element of the superstructure is the staircase, which takes up quite a lot of space. Therefore, it is necessary to think in advance about the most optimal location for its placement and ways to ergonomically use the space under the flight of stairs.

Decoration of rooms with a mezzanine

There are many options for how to correctly fit a mezzanine into a residential apartment.

Top shelf in Khrushchev

To decorate a small apartment stylishly and practically, it is important to use every square meter wisely. The mezzanine is perfect for compact storage of things.

It can be placed in the hallway or corridor. There is also a place for it in the kitchen.

When placing a shelf in the hallway, it can be used for shoes or seasonal clothing. A mezzanine can replace a shoe stand, freeing up space in the room.

Mezzanine in the nursery

Such furniture will also come in handy in a children's room. Toys, clothes, bedding and much more are stored there. In this case, the mezzanine can be used as the basis for an additional location. This could be the area above the child’s sleeping place, which will become a play area. This design is only possible when using a reliable and durable structure that can withstand heavy loads.

Hall, living room or office

In this part of the house, a mezzanine is rare. A shelf under the ceiling is useful for storing books, documents or other printed materials

When choosing a model for the living room, you need to pay special attention to appearance. It should look harmonious with the furniture in the room

If the size allows, you can place a tall wardrobe with a mezzanine in the room.

Bedroom

A mezzanine is also rarely installed in the bedroom. Designers recommend this option for small rooms.

If the room is spacious and there is enough furniture installed in it to store things, then an additional shelf will definitely not be needed.

Other options

In the bathroom, a shelf under the ceiling plays the role of a cabinet for storing household chemicals.

If the apartment has a divided bathroom, a compact mezzanine will also come in handy in the toilet as a place to store paper.

How to choose

When choosing a mezzanine for a room, you should pay attention to the following significant points:

  • type of construction. Open options are suitable for rooms with a small area;
  • furniture dimensions. The depth and width of the structure must match the free space allocated for its placement;
  • compliance with design. In this case, you need to focus on the interior of the room.

Particular attention should be paid to the presence of ventilation. It is necessary to ensure that things stored inside are ventilated.

Basically, small drillings are created inside for these purposes. This ensures a constant supply of air.

If you decide to install furniture in the hallway, make sure you have an additional light source in advance. It is best to use options in protective shades.

I like mezzanines. They are practical and can hold a lot of things. Correctly use space on the wall or cabinet. After all, many apartments are small. I consider the mezzanines closed with a door to be the best of all.

How to cover the mezzanine. Mezzanine in Khrushchev: can’t be removed and decorated?

The mezzanine in the Khrushchev building is not a storage room, not a hut, but an unknown animal. A baby closet, shyly huddled right up to the ceiling. In a small apartment, mezzanines, like built-in wardrobes, were needed to store things and at the same time to save space. Sometimes they were installed in the hallway, and sometimes in the corridor leading to the kitchen.

On the mezzanine you can put away everything that is not needed in the near future and for the next six months. We kept an artificial Christmas tree and toys for it there, and every year the holiday began with an adventure: I, as the smallest one, was shoved onto the mezzanine, like in a fairy-tale cave, and from there I handed over all our New Year’s treasures to the adults. The rest of the time there was no need to remember the mezzanines at all.

If the issue of storing things in your apartment has long been resolved, and mezzanines only waste space under the ceiling, then you can get rid of them.

Don't worry, it won't be considered a redevelopment. To be sure, you can check the BTI documents: if the end of the world does not happen, no built-in wardrobes or mezzanines will be added there. The main thing is that during dismantling, do not get carried away and do not destroy the walls.

But if the very idea that you can voluntarily give up convenient storage seems blasphemous to you, then you can turn the mezzanine from a suitcase without a handle into a pleasing addition to the interior.

First of all, check whether you have one-sided or two-sided ones. If the doors are only on one side, then perhaps it makes sense to make them at the other end: it will be much more convenient to get things out.

Mezzanines are usually inconspicuous. All we usually see from them are doors. That's what we'll do with them.

In principle, they can be removed altogether, then you will have a spacious shelf. But if you consider that it usually puts away everything that won’t be needed for a long time, then think for yourself: do you want to climb there all the time to wipe off the dust.

The doors can be designed so that they are pleasing to the eye. Look around: what kind of furniture is located near the mezzanines? Entirely wooden? With glass doors? Or maybe plastic?

Whatever it is, that’s how we design the mezzanine doors. Then the mezzanine doors will immediately turn into a significant part of the interior. They can be made of wood, plastic, and glass, and their design can also be altered. Replace, for example, hinged ones with sliding ones - and they will immediately give the room a more modern look. They can even be decorated with some kind of pattern: as long as it goes well with the surrounding environment.

Peculiarities

Unlike standard furniture, which performs basic functions, the mezzanine is mainly used as an auxiliary storage place for various accessories that are rarely used.

Mezzanines are great for storing things that are not suitable for the current season, as well as for other purposes. They are often made with a hanging structure.

For example, this furniture can be used as a storage room and located right under the ceiling.

Very often this option is found in narrow hallways; they seem to be designed to have mezzanines, especially in apartments where there is little space for storing things.

Often, similar cabinets are installed in a bathroom or balcony, as they are compact and quite roomy.

However, the mezzanine above the door in the hallway looks the most harmonious. It complements the overall interior of the room, while unloading other pieces of furniture.

Nowadays, manufacturers supply many types of furniture in question, trying to suit the interior of each room.

Varieties can be:

  • one-sided;
  • bilateral;
  • open;
  • closed execution.

An excellent option for a cramped corridor would be a corner mezzanine design.

The most popular and at the same time standard type remains the mounted product located under the ceiling. The photo of such a mezzanine shows how well it fits into the interior of the hallway. Moreover, these structures do not fill the free space on the floor.

In addition, apartment furnishings are also equipped with open products that are not equipped with doors. Outwardly, they look like an ordinary shelf.

What to pay attention to

Various options for assembling furniture suggest that the manufacturing process takes into account the following environmental factors that affect the correctness and quality of assembly:

  • Room dimensions;
  • Proximity of doorways;
  • Length of walls;
  • Type of hallway (square, corner, branching).

Assembly of modular structures is most optimal

When making it yourself, you need to pay attention to the quality of the material, the resistance of the surface to moisture and dust. Can be used as special furniture boards, plywood sheets, etc. What do you have enough money and imagination for?

What do you have enough money and imagination for?

It is important to decide on the design style within which the hallway will be decorated and feel free to take a hacksaw and a screwdriver.

Assembling a hallway is not difficult at all. With enough persistence, desire and patience, you can make beautiful, highly functional things with your own hands, and forget about going to the furniture store for many years.

What materials can a mezzanine be made from?

A convenient and functional box can be made from various materials. Chipboard (chipboard), MDF (medium density fiberboard), solid wood, and even plasterboard are suitable, but it is more likely for the external decoration of the shelf.

Table 1. Advantages and disadvantages of materials

MaterialPositive traitsNegative qualities
Chipboardcan be used for both interior and exterior decoration of the mezzanine; large selection of sizes and thicknesses; relatively low price; it is possible to purchase a product covered with a laminated film, which gives an aesthetic appearance; a large selection of colors for laminated chipboard, which makes it possible to perfectly match the color of existing furniture. the material contains resins, which at first may emit a not very pleasant specific odor, but over time it will disappear; afraid of moisture; It is not advisable to use used pieces of chipboard since the material is hollow and can crumble when reused; When cutting yourself, there is a high probability of chipping.
MDF• just like chipboard, can be used inside and outside the drawer; • aesthetic appearance and wide choice of colors; moisture resistance; no resins are used in the manufacturing process, the material is environmentally friendly and odorless; high strength and resistance to mechanical damage; long service life. the price is significantly higher than that of chipboard; weight – the material is quite heavy; You will have to buy according to ready-made sizes or order cutting at a factory, since the material is difficult to process independently by hand without special equipment.
Solid woodnatural, environmentally friendly material; easy to process and cut; possibility of long-term use. high price; does not tolerate both high humidity and too dry air - there is a possibility of cracks; there is a high probability of deformation due to temperature fluctuations.
Drywallrelatively low price; insensitive to changes in moisture and temperature; easy to use and install; weight is not heavy. fragile material, requires care when processing; not suitable for the base and as doors for the mezzanine, can only be used for exterior decoration; requires additional lags that will act as support and base for the box.

These are the main disadvantages and advantages of the most common materials that you can use when thinking about constructing a mezzanine. But as experience shows, the most common material for making furniture and mezzanines, among other things, is laminated chipboard.

What mezzanines look like in different styles of corridor and hallway

If the mezzanine is not part of the furniture set, it is important that it is in harmony with it. Sometimes when updating furniture it is worth thinking about changing the facade for the shelf under the ceiling

There are many examples when stylistic contradictions spoiled all impressions of the setting. Thus, an oak facade will be completely out of place in a minimalist interior, and shelves with curtains will never find their place in a classic.

The standard and most common type is the mounted model, located under the ceiling.

Modern

The main condition of the style is harmony; everything must be done in one key. Consequently, the design of the mezzanine largely depends on the type and color of furniture and decoration. Modernism does not limit the materials used. The sliding doors of the mezzanine can be decorated with stained glass, if they complement the rest of the decor. They can even be decorated with forged elements if there is a staircase with such railings nearby. MDF facades remain the main finishing material.

Thanks to the appropriate finishing, such designs fit well into the interior.

Classic

Increasingly, luxurious and elegant classics are found in ordinary medium- and large-sized hallways. The basis of the composition is oversized furniture with quilted leather inserts and beveled mirrors. Even if the mezzanine above the door in the corridor is not part of the set, it will not be difficult to make it interesting.

Cabinet structures are attached directly to furniture. Typically, these mezzanines are located on the upper tiers of cabinets.

The material for the facade can be natural wood or MDF with a good texture. The doors, decorated with leather inserts that imitate a carriage frame, look original. Along the perimeter, a niche can be highlighted with stucco, even to the point of creating a support for the shelf on the walls in the form of semi-columns. The bottom of the shelf can be decorated with acrylic mirror plastic and diamonds.

The size of the internal space of such a design will depend on the height of the cabinet and the free space between the upper tier and the ceiling of the room.

Advice! When arranging deep niches, it is worth thinking about additional lighting. The best option would be an LED ceiling light for the closet.

Minimalism

In the hallway, where there is nothing superfluous, the ceiling structure should not attract attention. The doors are made of MDF with a plastic coating. They cover the entire niche completely

Fittings without handles are used and open upward when pressed. Facades made of tinted plexiglass would also be appropriate.

The advantage of wall cabinets is that they do not take up free space on the floor.

Contemporary

This style has long filled homes and won hearts, but many mistakenly continue to call it modern. The word "Contemporary" means "modern". Comfort in the interior is created with the help of inexpensive items, smooth surfaces and a minimum of decor. The mezzanine in the contemporary corridor under the ceiling should be discreet. Doors made of laminated chipboard or MDF with plastic coating are suitable.

When choosing suitable furniture, you should definitely take into account the design features.

Country

In a unique rustic style, simplicity and naturalness prevail. A checkered curtain or a painted swing door with a round wooden handle will suffice here. The niche can remain open to store small items in wicker baskets.

Most often, the hallway is chosen to place hanging structures.

Provence

Natural materials and pastel colors predominate. It is allowed to paint any surface with light paint, including wooden furniture. The facades can be solid or in the form of doors with wooden blinds. It is appropriate to use decoration using decoupage.

Another suitable place to place a mezzanine is a long corridor.

Ventilation and lighting

In order for things in the mezzanine to be ventilated, ventilation must be created. This is done by drilling holes in the walls, which provides access to fresh air.

If the mezzanine is located in poorly lit areas (in the hallway, in the kitchen, in the corridor), it is necessary to install an additional light source in it. This may be a regular protective lamp, which is recommended to be placed closer to the doors. This will help protect it from damage and make it easier to replace the light bulb if necessary.

The mezzanine, like any other part of the furniture set, should not only be functional, but also fit harmoniously into the interior. Therefore, it is worth paying special attention to the design. Properly selected mezzanines can not only add originality to the room, but also visually change its space.

How to make a mezzanine in an opening. How to make a mezzanine with your own hands

But often the question of how to make a mezzanine is perplexing. Let's deal with this in order.

Let's decide on the type of mezzanine

This could be: 1. a stationary mezzanine fixed to the walls; 2. furniture mezzanine mounted on cabinets.

The location of the furniture will tell you which type is best to choose. Since the mezzanine will regularly be overhead, its reliability is a vital aspect. Try to avoid a cantilever arrangement, that is, attaching the shelf to only one side.

A good placement option is between the walls. The conclusion immediately suggests itself: the mezzanine should be placed in a corridor or a narrow room (for example, a bathroom or toilet).

Advantages of installing a mezzanine between the walls

1. Fastening on two (three) sides. 2. Possibility of increasing depth without increasing torque. Simply put, the additional weight of the structure does not rip the fastening off the wall. 3. Only two planes of the mezzanine need to be decorated – the front and bottom.

Conclusion: if the mezzanine is located in a niche between three walls, then the work on its manufacture comes down to arranging shelves and hanging the door.

How to make a stationary mezzanine with your own hands

1. The bottom of the product must be at a height of at least 2 m from the floor, for the mezzanine - the remaining space above. 2. When placing above a door, align the bottom plane of the shelf with the top of the doors. This option is the most practical and looks aesthetically pleasing. 3. Do not leave any free space between the top of the structure and the ceiling. This dead zone will only collect dust. 4. A mezzanine located close to the light source will greatly shade the room.

There are two reliable ways to attach a mezzanine.

Fastening the mezzanine on wooden blocks

We drill holes in a block of the required length in increments of 25 cm. Draw a horizontal line on the wall according to the level and apply the block. Through the holes we mark the mounting points on the wall. We drill holes 60 mm deep, insert plastic plugs - dowels. We attach the rail and fasten it with self-tapping screws. We perform a similar operation on the opposite wall. (Fig. 1)

Fastening the mezzanine to a metal profile

Along the perimeter of the bottom of the mezzanine we attach a PN ceiling profile 28 × 27 mm and connect it with crossbars from a PP profile 60 × 27 mm. We hem the bottom of the frame with a sheet of plasterboard (you can find out more about working with plasterboard →). On top we place a flooring made of OSB or thick plywood, rigid enough so that the shelf does not sag under the weight of things (Fig. 2).

If there is a significant span of the mezzanine inside, we arrange additional fastening to the ceiling using a suspension. Mezzanine doors are made hinged or sliding. They can be decorated with veneer, self-adhesive film, paper, or simply painted with enamel paint.

After assembling the shelf itself, doors of the required size can be ordered from a furniture workshop, which will not cost much.

How to make a furniture mezzanine with your own hands

The main requirement for such a mezzanine will be to match the style with the existing furniture. Before you start making a mezzanine with your own hands for finished furniture, select a material of identical color and texture. Select fittings. As the main material, you can use furniture chipboard or OSB, already laminated. Or, using self-adhesive paper, achieve the required color and pattern. You can fasten the sheets together with ordinary metal furniture corners.

A major renovation of an apartment poses a serious question for its owners: should they get rid of the mezzanine or not? We advise you to never deprive yourself of this convenient additional space.

Advantages of a mezzanine

  1. Most modern kitchens are not large in size.
    There are many small items that you don't need every day, but still need storage space. Depositphotos
  2. Not every kitchen can fit a full-fledged cabinet.
    But the mezzanine doesn’t take up much space, although it can accommodate a whole army of jars, food containers and even your favorite food processor. Depositphotos
  3. The space above the door will be empty in any case.
    But other parts of the kitchen can be used more productively, so they should not be cluttered with bedside tables and cabinets. Depositphotos
  4. An old mezzanine can be updated so that it fits perfectly into the space of a modern kitchen.
    This point will be especially important for anyone who likes their home space to be decorated organically and discreetly. Depositphotos
  5. Reinstalling or updating an old mezzanine is not a difficult task at all.
    The design is very easy to install. Many kitchen furniture manufacturers undertake the production of a mezzanine in the style of all other elements of kitchen furniture. Depositphotos

If you want to update the mezzanine in the hallway with your own hands, feel free to get down to business and don’t be afraid of any difficulties.

First, you will need to detach the entire structure from the ceiling and assess its condition.

This is important if you want to use the material from which the mezzanine was originally made

Break the structure down into its components. If the mezzanine was made from real quality wood, there is a good chance that it has been well preserved. In this case, it is necessary to sand the surface and cover it with a special protective solution.

The doors can be painted to match the walls if you plan to make the structure invisible. You can also order mezzanines for the corridor from the master who made your furniture set. This way the mezzanine will fit beautifully into the new kitchen.

If the old mezzanine material is not at all suitable for use, you can cut out new parts according to the standards of the old mezzanine and install them on the old iron structure.

We advise you to take care of the safety of your new mezzanine in advance and cover its bottom with a special film or at least a piece of old oilcloth.
