Order in the hallway: organizing space in the hallway

Storing all sorts of things in the hallway is a kind of art. Especially if the apartment is small and there is not enough space in the rooms to fit all the necessary things. In this case, willy-nilly, some of the items have to be placed in the hallway. But here’s the problem - usually in small apartments the hallway is also small and looks like a narrow and cramped corridor, where it’s hard to turn around, let alone place some necessary household items. But, we repeat, it is necessary to place them there, because - where else to put them? That is why this word was uttered - art.

Indeed, without creative skills and some inclinations of abstract thinking, storing things in the corridor will resemble a revolutionary barricade that can only be overcome by storm. How to properly, aesthetically and conveniently equip a hallway (especially one that is not too spacious)?

Hooks and hangers

If, after all, the closet does not fit in the hallway, you can do without it completely. For example, drive in hooks or hang hangers. In general, replacing a bulky and clumsy cabinet with compact hooks can completely transform a small hallway, turning it into a more spacious room.

Try placing hooks at different levels so your outerwear won't look like it's hanging in one continuous heap. In addition, if children live in the apartment, they will be able to hang their things on their own.

Folding furniture

In another way it is called transforming. It is attached to the wall and, if necessary, unfolds to form different surfaces. There are options for folding chairs, shelves, hangers, and key holders. When assembled, they form a flat surface that fits tightly to the wall. This is a convenient way to temporarily place different items. A correctly installed device will not interfere with movement in the hallway. The structures can be easily folded and unfolded with one movement of the hand.

Mezzanine

More recently, this design was considered a relic of the past, but in vain. For small corridors, mezzanines are a real lifesaver. By installing such a structure, for example, above the front door, you can put things there that are not currently in use.

So the idea with mezzanines is an excellent solution for organizing additional storage space. In addition, unlike its ugly Soviet predecessors, a modern mezzanine can become an original and stylish decorative element.

Another undeniable advantage is that you can make a mezzanine with your own hands, and thanks to the abundance of building and finishing materials, it will turn out no worse than a custom-made one. Therefore, in addition to saving space, you will also get budget savings.

How, what, where?

To equip the hallway “wisely”, you need a certain system for storing various things and objects in the corridor. With such a system, even a tiny corridor will fit a lot of things, and the hallway will look neat and stylish. But how can this be done in practice? Let's talk about this in more detail.

  • We will equip a place to store all sorts of small items. It is so customary that in the hallway (corridor) all sorts of small things are usually stored: keys to an apartment or car, umbrellas, glasses, headphones, shoe polish, etc. In principle, this is normal, they should be there, otherwise all this necessary I would have to look for rubbish all over the apartment. But usually such things are lying around in the hallway haphazardly, getting underfoot and cluttering up the space, creating chaos. The problem will be solved by a small shelf nailed to the wall or several hooks on the wall, where you can neatly stack or hang the above items. It will be neat and aesthetically pleasing, and, in addition, such a shelf or hooks will save valuable space.

  • A mirror is a necessary attribute of any hallway. But what if, due to the size of the corridor, it does not fit there? No problem: in this case, it is better to equip the hallway with a small mirrored cabinet or a floor mirror with shelves and a hanger. That is, we are talking about a multifunctional mirror in which you can look, and, in addition, many small things and items of clothing will be placed on the shelves and hanger.

  • Where else to store shoes if not in the hallway? Especially the one in which the apartment's inhabitants go outside. But the problem is that such shoes get tangled under your feet, interfere with the passage, clutter up the space, and create chaos in the corridor. And in general, a hallway filled with shoes looks unaesthetic. A special locker or shelf for shoes will help out. And you don’t have to worry that such a piece of furniture won’t fit in the hallway. Modern furniture stores have cabinets and shelves to suit every taste and any size. Place shoes on (or in) them, and the hallway will immediately be transformed. In addition to shoes, you can put all sorts of small things, scarves, gloves, etc. in the shoe rack (or on it).
  • In order for as many things as possible to fit in the hallway (even the smallest one), it is necessary to follow the rule that says: “Every thing must be in its place.” In addition to being convenient, it is also beautiful. Therefore, if it’s summer, it’s better to put winter things away (for example, put them on the top shelves of a closet), and summer things, on the contrary, should always be at hand. Well, or vice versa, if it’s winter outside. Otherwise, there will be constant confusion and cheerful confusion in the corridor, not to mention the absence of at least some aesthetics and style.

  • In addition, we should not forget about basic convenience. In fact: it is much more convenient and easier to put on shoes while sitting, rather than standing, bent over. Therefore, a small bench in the corridor is very appropriate. To save space, it can be combined with a shoe shelf (such pieces of furniture are also available in stores). It will be convenient, practical, and aesthetically pleasing.

  • In no case should you forget about the corners in the hallway. Correctly placed corners will save a lot of space in the hallway. Corner furniture, equipped in addition with drawers, hooks and shelves, is ideal for this. Often nothing else is needed in the corridor except corner furniture. It will fit everything you need. And if in terms of color it matches the walls, then it’s absolutely wonderful. In this case, interior harmony and comfort will be ensured.

  • It often happens that no cabinets in the hallway are needed at all, since they are already available in the apartment itself. In this case, a floor hanger will come in handy, on which you can hang outerwear and hats. In fact, don’t hang wet raincoats and jackets in the linen closet! Such a hanger has many advantages over the same closet: it does not need to be mounted, it can be easily rearranged from place to place, it is convenient to hang clothes on it - and at its full length, so it will never be wrinkled and, moreover, will dry well . In addition, there is space on the hanger for hats and umbrellas. Well, in addition, a lot of clothes can be placed on a floor hanger - even more than in a closet.
  • If a closet, even a small one, or a mobile hanger still does not fit in the hallway, hooks hung on the walls will help out. This is a very convenient and in its own way witty solution. They don’t take up space, it’s easy to hang outerwear on them, and, in addition, all sorts of bags, umbrellas, scarves, skates - whatever. Moreover, at different heights so that children can easily reach them. In addition, such hooks are very cheap, so there is a saving on the family budget.

  • Yes, we almost forgot about the space above the door! But in vain, since this is often a way out of many difficult situations related to saving space in the corridor. Mezzanines or shelves equipped under the ceiling in this place will accommodate a lot of things: seasonal clothes, all sorts of items that the owners rarely use, etc. And what is very important is that mezzanines do not interfere with movement along the corridor and do not clutter up the space at all, since, let us remind you, they are located under the ceiling.

These are some simple and, at the same time, rational ideas for storing things in the hallway. Nothing fancy or complicated, but at the same time they will help equip your living space, creating practicality and comfort in it.

Mirror "with a secret"

In a small hallway, where all the furniture is overstocked, placing an ordinary mirror is wasteful. At the same time, it’s also impossible to live without a mirror in the hallway.

What if you make a mirror along with a small cabinet? This design is quite simple to make; the main thing is to provide hinges for attaching the mirror door, and find several boards to put together the base. The hallway wall itself will serve as the back wall.

You can easily put various small things in such a cache, such as glasses or house or car keys. In addition, you can cover the electrical panel in this original way. And if you make a similar design smaller, you will get a full-fledged key holder.

Find a place for little things

Come up with a special place where you will store all small things. Such as keys, change, letters and so on. After all, most often they are lying all over the hallway, creating the appearance of untidiness and busyness. For storage, you can choose a chest of drawers or, say, a small shelf.

It would be better to have special hooks for keys.

Angles

Few people use the corners in the apartment, and yet designers recommend taking a closer look at this part of the room. Especially in cases where every centimeter matters.

Therefore, an excellent solution to optimize space would be to install corner cabinets and shelving. By the way, you can make a similar rack with your own hands. All you need to do is purchase a bracket and a couple of boards.

Compact shoe storage

Believe me, it looks terrible when you not only have a small hallway, but also different shoes scattered everywhere . Dirt from shoes tends to spread throughout the apartment, and all guests will constantly trip over it.

If this is your situation, find a special place to store your shoes. This could be a shoe box (a special cabinet consisting of square compartments for shoes), a drawer at the bottom of a large closet, or fastenings for boots that help them not fall.

Keys

To prevent your keys from getting lost, organize a key holder for them. These can be either just hooks at the door or a special cabinet. You can even find original key holders hidden in the watch.

A small basket or deep plate will also be quite convenient. A mini chest of drawers would also work. He will most likely collect not only keys, but also other little things.

You can also allocate a separate area for keys in a wall organizer, which we will mention more than once today as an ideal way to store small items in the hallway.

Mirrored wardrobe

Interior designers offer owners of narrow hallways to take advantage of a win-win option and kill two birds with one stone: organize spacious storage space and visually expand the room with the help of large mirrors. Today, furniture manufacturers can make a cabinet to suit any room parameters, which means that it will fit perfectly even into a tiny hallway: closed doors will hide everything unnecessary from prying eyes, avoid the feeling of clutter and make the room tidier.

Small accessories

Items such as gloves, glasses, headphones, belts and laces are most conveniently placed in a hanging organizer with pockets, and the most frequently used items are placed in an organizer by the door.

You can put a box or basket for them. If there are a lot of things, make shelves from several baskets held together with rope and hang them on the wall. This way, each accessory will have its own basket. Or just put a few next to each other.

If you purchase a bench or ottoman with a folding seat, you can store a lot inside. And under a regular bench, you can again use baskets and boxes.

Idea No. 1. Banquettes

Choose a small model with hidden storage or a simple bench with a padded seat. If you don't want to leave things in sight, add wicker baskets to the bench. Finding these won't be difficult if you know the exact size. To do this, measure the distance from the floor to the seat and between the legs. This will keep your shoes and bags out of sight and provide you with a place to take off your boots.
