Decorating an apartment is a creative and incredibly exciting process, but quite complex. After all, for an interior to become unique, it must contain original details that not only decorate the decor, but give it a bright personality. Decorative elements can be both large-scale and very small. The main thing is that they fit into the concept of the project and make it interesting and personalized.
In this publication, using the example of a design project for a modern apartment with elements of art deco and futurism from the portfolio of Ruslan and Maria Green, we will talk about current interior decorating techniques and share unusual ideas for decorating a living space.
Kitchen in a golden “frame”
In the photo: Built-in kitchen in the interior of a modern apartment
A kitchen unit built into a niche with a worktop, sink and hob is effectively highlighted with a golden baguette. An elegant frame turns a functional corner into a real art object, favorably emphasizing the composition with glossy black facades and a beautifully illuminated marble apron.
Decorative pillows as bright accents
In the photo: Lounge area with white sofas and bright pillows
The best decoration for white sofas and armchairs is bright pillows. It can be with drapery or decorative buttons, fleecy or silk fabric. In any case, these color accents will play an important role in the decor.
Painting on the ceiling

The author's painting on the ceiling is a premium decor: large-scale, exclusive, setting the tone for the entire interior. In the apartment in the photo, this current idea is implemented using stretched fabric with photo printing. An abstract drawing with recognizable Asian notes is made in the project’s palette and creates a bohemian atmosphere.
LED panel: 3-in-1 decor
In the photo: Bubble panel lamp for the living room
A large LED bubble panel is both a lamp, a decorative element, and a partition with which you can use to zone the space in an original way. The black frame made of glossy plastic allows you to harmoniously integrate the panel into the portal, emphasizing the futuristic nature of the environment.
Table setting or additional decor?

You can even create bright interior accents using dishes. Designer plates in a delicate blue color, made of volcanic glass, go well with Venetian chandeliers and other blue decor. And placemats of the appropriate shade will help to strengthen their role in the design of the living room.
Decorating old furniture: new life for old things
Today, techniques related to restoring old furniture are extremely popular.
A prerequisite for obtaining a high-quality result is surface preparation. Whatever piece of furniture you choose, it must be thoroughly cleaned and degreased. Be sure to remove any old paint if the surface has been painted and sand it well. And only then apply primer. Using primer, you can also level the surface: the primer is applied and then, after drying, treated with sandpaper. This way you can apply as many layers of primer as necessary to level the surface.
And after preparing the surface, the furniture is painted and decorated to your taste. The option of decoupaging furniture is quite popular. This technique allows you to completely transform old furniture, even without drawing skills, focusing on your taste and sense of style. But, as with any other technique, decoupage requires experience and skill. If you've never tried this technique, take a decoupage tutorial and practice on smaller projects first.
Do not forget that after you finish the decorating process, you need to protect the surface with a special furniture varnish. It is better not to use artistic varnishes.
Interesting results can be achieved by following the relief stenciling technique. Creative enthusiasts use both coarse and fine relief paste. The pre-prepared stencil must be firmly attached to the surface. The required areas are filled with the paste composition and receive a unique texture. After drying, it is important to sand the result a little and varnish it for strength and durability.
Accessories made of colored glass

The calling card of this project is small interior accessories made of colored glass in the color scheme of the decor. Made by skilled craftsmen, they look elegant and light, look organic against the background of light decoration and perfectly complement various decorative compositions.
Interior elements that set the tone and mood of the room
Each room should have that zest, that main element around which the entire structure of its interior is built. Let's look at some striking examples of this rule.
Any properly created interior requires the presence of a so-called focal element, that is, an accessory or object that immediately catches the eye upon entering the room. The correct choice of this element - be it an architectural segment, surface texture, lighting fixture or piece of furniture - sets the tone and mood of the entire interior. But what is the best way to select this element? Here are a few examples of creating a focal center that does not dominate or conflict with other objects in the interior.
#1. Architectural elements
The central element of this interior is the fireplace, literally, the stove from which the designers danced, and which determined the arrangement of the furniture, organizing the entire space of the room and creating an atmosphere of comfort and sophistication. The texture of the stone decoration of the fireplace façade is repeated in the color and texture of the sofa, armchairs and curtains.
It is extremely important to make the right choice of the size of the central architectural element of the interior. If it is too large, it will overwhelm the rest of the room; if the main focal element is too small, it will be invisible and other accessories or pieces of furniture will take over the function of the focal element.
#2. Painting in the interior
This painting, located right in front of the front door, directly above the console table, is an example of a perfectly chosen focal piece that instantly creates the desired impact and sets the overall trend and style of the entire room.
It is very important to choose the right size and color scheme of the painting. Its proportions should correspond to the proportions of the wall on which it is located, and its palette should be harmoniously combined with the color scheme of the room. A large, expressive painting will look great against a neutral wall and in an interior with passive furniture tones. Artistic photographs or eclectic collages of several photographs also look great in the interior of the room.
#3. View from the window
If the room has panoramic windows, it would be a sin not to use them as a focal element that will emphasize the architectural merits of the room and visually expand the space. The view from the panoramic window is an ideal focal element that is in constant dynamic dialogue with the interior.
In a room with a panoramic window, the furniture should be minimalist, simple and discreet. This will highlight the delights of the view from the window and create an atmosphere of mystery and spaciousness.
#4. Texture
Texture can also act as a focal element. In this interior, the texture of the wall, which has a monochromatic color scheme, gives the room more depth, while smooth, shiny surfaces of objects create a feeling of coolness, and soft ones, on the contrary, bring warmth and tranquility to the interior. The neutral, minimalist color palette of the kitchen decor emphasizes the effectiveness of the main focal element - the texture of the wall (the so-called apron). The gloss of ceramic tiles goes well with stainless steel facades of household appliances.
#5. Color accents
Correctly selected color accents can transform even the most boring hallway interior into an interesting and original room. The color focal points of this hallway were the doors with metal rivets, painted in bold, contrasting tones.
Particular attention should be paid to the coloring of the architectural elements of the room. A correctly selected color scheme will allow you to attract attention or veil certain parts of the room. Turquoise The combination of white walls, embossed baseboards and turquoise doors attracts the eye and invites you to come and visit.
A bold pop of color, be it a painted architectural element, a piece of furniture or a rug, instantly creates a playful mood in the interior. This is especially true in strict modern minimalist interiors.
Designer plastic furniture

Designer furniture made of plastic, like the black coffee table in the photo, is functional and unusual. Therefore, such items are often used to create a creative atmosphere. The main thing is to choose truly original things and not turn your apartment into a museum of modern art.

There are a great many of them. These are pieces of furniture, paintings, vases, wallpaper, curtains, pillows. All we see in the interior of the apartment are decorative elements.

Metal
Despite the coldness and severity of metal, elegant carved things of incredible rounded shapes find worthy use in the interior.
Not only the style and well-groomed appearance of a garden or terrace in the form of benches, figurines, gazebos, and porches will be emphasized by metal decorative elements, but also in bedrooms, living rooms and offices.
Metal candelabra, ornate table legs, umbrella stands, and hangers draw attention to the taste of the owners.
The openwork and vintage nature of custom-made products, fantasy and artistic background are conveyed by metal furniture. The combination of airiness, lightness and grace in such decor sometimes amazes with flights of imagination.
