Wrought iron beds in a modern bedroom interior + 75 photos of examples of models

Forged beds have been used in interiors for a long time. These pieces of furniture do not age and do not go out of fashion. Forging means the process of deforming metal (heated or cooled) under the action of a press or hammer, that is, its artistic design. The more elegant the pattern, the finer the craftsman’s work, and, accordingly, the higher the price for the finished product. The history of blacksmithing goes back centuries. It began at the time when man learned to make fire and “became acquainted” with metal. In Rus', blacksmiths were one of the most respected people in villages, along with elders. Sometimes superstitious residents even attributed supernatural abilities to them, as if the process of metal processing was a matter of an exclusively mystical nature. It is quite possible that the transformations that the heated base underwent really seemed like a miracle to people.

Now forging metal is just a physical process that obeys the laws of this science. Although, without the subtle artistic taste of the master, the product will be just the same stamping, without the “soul” that the blacksmith puts into his work. With the help of forging, they create elements of the exterior of the house and the design of the site: fences, canopies, gazebos, gates, bars for windows and doors. Forged beds, mirror frames, railings, chandeliers, candlesticks, tables, hanging shelves, separate fireplace elements and stands for indoor plants are used in the room.

Features of forged products and manufacturing options

Forged products have a long service life. On average, the “life expectancy” of a structure is more than 100 years. You can even leave your wrought-iron bed as an inheritance to your children, because it will retain its original appearance.

Based on the temperature to which the blank (piece of raw material) is brought, two types of forging are distinguished:

ColdMainly used in jewelry. Cool copper, silver or gold.
hotUsed for manual work.

Based on the nature of the work, the classification is as follows:

StampingIn this case, special hollow forms are used, that is, the blank is limited on all sides, and when heated, it fills the voids and takes on the desired shape.
ManualHarvesting is not limited at all or only partially. All work is done manually (as the name suggests) using a hammer.
MachineFor forging, special units are used that are equipped with heavy hammers or presses that deform the metal.

It is worth noting that the harder the steel, the lower the maximum heating temperature. The fact is that soft material crystallizes more slowly when cooling. Overheating of steel is fraught with the formation of “grains” and violation of the integrity of the blank. It can crack or even shatter into pieces from one hammer blow. There is also such a thing as burnout. In this case, the chemical structure of steel is disrupted, it begins to actively lose carbon, which brings it closer to iron. Such material is unsuitable for work. Overheating is much more dangerous than overheating, since it can no longer be corrected.

There is also another classification according to the processing method:

  • Regular. The entire product is made from one blank.
  • Welding. It connects preheated parts to each other.
  • Critical crimping The basis is taken from material heated to a dough-like state. By forging, its smallest particles are compacted and welded together, and in parallel with this process, slag is released.

For a certain type of product, one or another processing method is used. Due to their large size, beds are made in parts and then welded into a solid structure.

Bed design and decoration ideas

Design and design solutions for forged beds.

With canopy

Models decorated with a canopy deserve special attention. Fine forging in combination with flowing fabric will give the atmosphere a special lightness, fabulousness and at the same time luxury and elitism.

The photo shows a bedroom and a wrought-iron bed, decorated with a canopy in the form of light curtains.

Antique

Designs with an aging effect are quite popular. Forged elements with a rough and poorly painted surface will add a vintage feel to the room.

With decorative upholstery

A very stylish design solution that gives the interior environment a special aesthetics and perfection.

With carriage tie

Forged lace details in combination with a carriage tie or capitonne become an exclusive decoration of the entire room, which is characterized by unsurpassed strength, convenience and practicality.

Methods for making forged beds

Forged beds are made mainly by two methods:

  • Stamping;
  • Handmade.

The price for stamped ones is several times lower, because they are produced faster and are not unique. During manual work, the master spends much more time, but the result is an exclusive, one might even say designer, product. It can be made according to customer's sketches.

The process itself is divided into several stages:

  • Heating the blank (steel base). Gradually heat the stove until it reaches a dark red heat. At this stage, preheated material is placed in it. The last nuance is very important, since a cold blank from a sharp temperature difference in the outer and inner layers can give cracks and breaks, which will not be visually visible, but will make themselves felt during crimping. The material is heated to the maximum temperature (a separate threshold is established for metals of different hardness) and removed from the furnace.
  • The next step will be crimping. Here the master begins to forge a blank. Ordinary people may assume that the metal inside has a dense structure, but in fact this is not the case. Microscopic cavities and “tunnels” are hidden under the top layer. You need to get rid of them, that is, “squeeze” the blank: press the heated material with a hammer.
  • Preparation. Almost the final stage. During preparation, the blank is given the desired shape and adjusted to the required dimensions. The result is an almost finished product, but still with rough outlines. This process, in turn, is also divided into several types: preparation of rings, flat things, solid and hollow cylinders.
  • Final finishing. At this stage, the product is finally adjusted to the sketch. It is cleaned of cracks, nicks and “bypassed” with a hammer again. At the same time, cold water is used to pour over the product. As a result, scale is formed, which has a positive effect on the smoothness of the surface. Finish the work by priming the surface and painting it.

When heated, scale forms on the surface of the blank. It partially falls off during crimping, and the rest is removed with a broom. Because of this layer, the blank loses a small part of its original size. For this reason, they take it a little more than the part they want to receive.

Cold forging of beds and its features

The cold production method includes processes such as bending and pressing. This metal processing method has a number of advantages:

  • the material used does not require high temperatures;
  • products obtained this way are very strong;
  • reduction of production time;
  • reduction of labor costs;
  • the production process is economical;
  • wide possibilities for design.

For production, special stencils are used, which significantly saves time and resources. The cold forging method requires special attention from the performer. This method does not accept errors, since they cannot be corrected.

Forged beds in various interior design styles

Forged beds can be of three types:

  • With headboard and footboard. They, in turn, can be the same height or different;
  • Only with headboard;
  • With a forged canopy frame.

Among the materials, preference is given to aluminum, cast iron, copper, steel and iron. Previously, only buyers from wealthy sections of society could afford such products due to their high cost. Now the prices for wrought-iron beds are also “biting”, but due to the absence of the need for replacement for many decades, the overpayment quickly turns into savings.

Many people mistakenly believe that such a bed will bring gloom to the room’s decor. These associations did not arise out of nowhere. Previously, wrought iron beds were used in styles with “heavy” luxury. They could be seen in historical films, where the bedrooms were decorated in dark colors, with an abundance of decorative elements. Such styles were classic for that time, but became far from the interior ideal of a modern person. However, the range of forged beds is represented by thousands of models, which are continued in most modern design trends. Such products are considered “native” to the classics, Provence and Italian style.

Fusion, kitsch and eclecticism

For a typical interior in the kitsch style, primitive wrought iron beds are used. The pattern on the sides will be simple and unpretentious without an abundance of fine knitting or complex elements. Often, for kitsch, which is characterized by a love for “low-grade” products, stampings are purchased, that is, elements of mass production. Fusion is in many ways similar to eclecticism; in fact, these are all just two extremes within a single style. The only difference is that eclecticism was created at the beginning of the last century on the ruins of the once popular Baroque and Rococo.

Fusion is classified as a younger trend that uses modern materials in design. Both styles are a mix. For this reason, wrought iron beds can come in a variety of shapes and metal “weaving”. The whole question is only in their combinations with other pieces of furniture, decor and decoration. For example, against the backdrop of brick or stone industrial walls, a classic bed with a complex curlicue pattern will look extremely original. In wooden houses made of timber with untreated surfaces that will “scream” about the rustic style, fusion will place a sleeping place made of expensive materials with forging, painted in extravagant colors. A room with a vintage-style bed with a soft, delicate pattern, eclecticism can easily be turned into a combined room. It will feature American colonial style decor and baroque stucco elements.

Art Nouveau or Art Nouveau

Art Nouveau managed to synthesize natural materials, calm shades (ash gray, beige, black, pastel colors) and smooth, rounded lines. Forged beds in the decoration of the bedroom will be its accent. The headboard and footboard will be decorated with solid curved lines of different diameters in certain areas. They will resemble long stems of fantastic flowers, which, with their interweaving, create a bizarre but naturally organic pattern.

By the way, forging in this style is used in all rooms: from the living room to the bathroom. The results of blacksmith work are found in decorative partitions, table legs, chair backs, window grilles, chandeliers and wall sconces. Art Nouveau strives to create a feeling in the environment, as if it were designed by nature itself. The abundance of colors and wavy lines is embodied not only in the decoration, but also in the forged beds. They are decorated with complex, symmetrical elements (flowers and leaves), which are continued in ornate patterns on the walls and carved wood in the furniture: designer cabinets, armchairs, cabinets. A forged ornament in Art Nouveau will certainly be the result of the fine work of a master.

Classicism

In classicism, forged products look organic and appropriate. In fact, the peak of their popularity coincided with the heyday of this style. It is characterized by an abundance of small details, graceful lines, patterns and ornaments more reminiscent of fine lace. You can choose a wrought-iron bed from samples from the late 19th to early 19th centuries. It will be decorated with symmetrical patterns with curls that were traditional for that time. An elegant addition will be a canopy made of satin fabric, which is combined with textiles for curtains and bedspreads.

Country

In country style, forged headboards are made with vertical “pins”, the top of which is connected by a modest ornament. The bed is covered with a blanket made of Scottish tartan (checkered fabric), which will emphasize the “cowboy” casualness of the setting. On the sides, the sides of the bed are complemented by high columns that rise above the composition. You can use standard models that used to be in all summer camps and sanatoriums, but with the addition of small twisted elements. Country is in many ways similar to a simple, rustic style, and therefore does not tolerate excessive pomp and luxury. For this direction, simple and functional furniture is chosen.

Shabby chic

Shabby chic is similar in many ways to Provence, but uses furniture that imitates well-preserved antiques. And his closest “relative” comes from the suburbs of Paris and prefers rough, aged elements. For shabby chic, beds that are used in a classic style are suitable. They are placed in a more colorful environment, but this combination does not spoil the overall picture. The forging is painted in delicate colors: white, pink, blue or peach. They are in harmony with colorful bedspreads, soft carpets on the floor and light bedroom furniture.

Loft

To decorate a room in a loft style, stone, brick, and metal are used. High panel ceilings are decorated with an abundance of communication systems, which become the highlight of the interior, and not the result of its careless design. Forged beds in this slightly softened and “combed” industrial are rarely used. If they are still chosen for industrial luxury, then only simple forms, without frills. They should not play a key role in the interior; the finishing can handle this successfully. A forged bed will become just a functional detail, discreet and practical.

Forging equipment for cold forging

Cold artistic forging is unthinkable without the use of special devices. To realize your every whim, you will need from 5 to 7 different machines. Some of them (3-5) can be made independently. For a novice master trying to avoid additional costs, such a decision would be correct. If the plans are quite extensive and other products will follow the forged bed, it makes sense to think about purchasing machines with an electric drive.

The main devices used for cold artistic forging are:

  • "Gnutik";
  • "Snail";
  • "Twister";
  • "Globe";
  • "Flashlight";
  • "Wave";
  • “Clamp.

“Gnutik”, performed on a horizontal or vertical platform, is a universal device with which you can make an arc or angle from a rod.

Rice. 3. Vertical "Gnutik"

Using the “Twister” you can twist rods, primarily of square cross-section, along the longitudinal axis. Both ends are secured, then one fastener is turned, the metal is rolled to the required shape. At first, using “Twister”, you can make “flashlights” and “cones”, although there is a special machine for this purpose.

Forging equipment: continued

Using the “Snail”, curls, spirals, and S-shaped parts are obtained. There may be large differences in the design of this device. Often the “Snail” is performed on a support if there is a need to bend thick rolled products.

Rice. 4. "Snail"

The "Globe" with its appearance evokes associations with a school protractor. The device is intended for producing arcs with a large bending radius from a strip, circle, square or hexagon. After securing the end of the workpiece, it is bent to its full length according to the template.

Rice. 5. "Globe"

“Wave” makes it possible to obtain wavy products from tubes or blanks of square, round, or hexagonal cross-section. The change in shape occurs due to the rotation of vertical rolls.

The “Flashlight” is similar in principle to the “Twister”, but here the rods bend around the guide shaft, creating a more regular and accurate shape. This device is used to make popular elements - “Lanterns” and “Cones”, consisting of 4-8 or even more rods.

Rice. 6. "Flashlight"

Forged beds for children

Furniture in a children's room should not only be comfortable, but also safe. Wrought iron beds are not used so often in the interior of this room, although the modern market offers a wide range of models with a special coating. It will not cause allergies and is completely harmless to the child’s body. In the nursery, they install both cribs with sides around the entire perimeter for the safety of the baby, and double options if there are two children. Some models (“attics”) are specially designed for small rooms. They are multifunctional and allow you to install a computer desk for work, cabinets or chairs under the sleeping place, which is located above.

Which iron processing option is better?

To make forged beds, hot and cold metal working methods are used during production. Hot working is a method in which metal is heated to a temperature of 700 °C. At the same time, the metal becomes malleable, and craftsmen give it the necessary shape. Processing is carried out through manual labor or the use of special machines. With their help, elements such as flowers and leaves are made.

In cold processing, interior items are made only using stamping machines. Elimination of manual labor reduces the cost of finished models. They are becoming more affordable. The cold working method is also called stamping, from the name of the stamping machines used in production.

After the products are ready, they are necessarily coated with special powder paint. It comes in different colors, which allows you to paint the bed in the shade you like. Furniture comes in white and also from light brown to black. The variety of shades of the finished product allows you to fit it into any interior.

Italian wrought iron beds with an antique effect look elegant. It is achieved by hand painting surfaces. The process is called patting. With its help, furniture takes on the appearance of bronze, copper, gold and silver. A white wrought-iron bed will also look great; it is best suited for the Provence style.

Color scheme in the design of a wrought iron bed

In traditional versions, black, gray “steel” and bronze paints are used. The bed must match the color scheme of the room, and modern materials allow you to get any desired shade. In the gentle, romantic bedrooms of young girls with floral patterns in textiles and an abundance of small elements, the following is used:

  • Lilac;
  • Pink;
  • Emerald.

For bedrooms in simple styles, paints are used:

  • Gray;
  • White;
  • Brown (usually with a metallic effect);
  • Blue;
  • Purple.

In flashy, experimental styles, metal beds are painted in several colors at once.

Shape and patterns

Today, forged beds are presented to consumers in a wide range of designs. Beds made using artistic forging techniques do not always have a luxurious design, floral patterns or curls. They can be made in a minimalist style or have strict shapes and straight lines.

Frame

The main role in the bed is given to the frame, which is the supporting part of the entire structure. Currently, manufacturers produce not only the traditional and familiar rectangular versions of furniture designs, but also double, two-tier, with drawers, round and oval shapes. They consist of a bottom, side posts, and one or two backs.

The frame is the visible part of the bed, so its choice must be taken with full responsibility. Forged frames are very popular and have the following advantages:

  • Long service life;
  • Possibility of combination with wood, leather and other materials;
  • Fits into the interior of any room;
  • Withstands heavy physical activity and temperature changes;
  • Moisture resistance;
  • Withstands exposure to sunlight and does not lose color;
  • Lack of special care.

Of all the variety, craftsmen use two main types of frames for forged beds:

  • With headboard and footboard. This type is preferred by consumers with conservative views and a penchant for classic style in the interior;
  • Only with a headboard. This is a more common type of frame that fits many styles.

For small rooms, to save space, some frame models are provided with drawers. They are used to contain bedding, seasonal items, and other interior items.

When choosing a forged bed, you need to pay attention to the bottom, which can have the following types.

  • Open or semi-open. The design allows the mattress to be constantly ventilated and has a long service life;
  • Wooden or iron. The choice of bottom depends on consumer preference. What sleeping surface does he sleep better on? Hard or soft?

The thickness of the metal affects the strength and reliability of forged and metal beds. During the frame creation process, manufacturers can add multi-colored pigments that change the color of the metal. Today, children's wrought-iron canopy beds are especially popular. In such a bed the child feels protected. In children's forged beds for girls, it is advisable to combine metal with wooden decorative elements or use a soft headboard. The canopy not only decorates the bed, but also creates a cozy, romantic atmosphere for adults.

Adult beds have different dimensions. Thus, forged single beds have a size of 1.4x2.0 m, the dimensions of double models range from 1.8 to 2.0-2.2 m.

Main types of frames:

  • For bunk beds;
  • Sofa beds;
  • Rectangular;
  • Oval;
  • For a double bed;
  • For the canopy.

Don’t forget about the symbol of relaxation and style ─ the sofa. The forged design of the sofa bed emphasizes the impeccable taste of the owner of the house, has wide functionality and stylistic features. The all-metal frame has the dimensions of a single bed of 0.9x2.0 m. The seat and backrest are upholstered, allowing you to arrange a sleeping place for an unexpected guest.

Forged beds have their disadvantages, namely: they cause unpleasant sensations when steel comes into contact with the skin. Today, modern manufacturers manufacture products using special metal processing. It eliminates cold from the structure.

Headboards and legs

Beds with a wrought-iron headboard are not as popular as headboards made of soft material. Despite this, they have their own flavor. One has only to choose a pattern, the style direction and the interior of the bedroom will become unique and inimitable.

The headboard can be:

  • Flat;
  • Curved;
  • Openwork;
  • Lattice;
  • Wicker;
  • Soft.

When the conversation turns to forged products, one immediately imagines heavy, immovable, openwork patterns on the headboard and footboard. But this is not true at all. They can have a graceful look with subtle twisted patterns or simple geometric lines that highlight the rest of the bedroom design. The visible part of the wrought-iron headboard complements the design of the entire room.

  • Soft – wrought iron beds with a soft headboard are suitable for any design. Leather material is used for manufacturing; textiles are rarely used. The wrought-iron headboard frames the soft upholstery, giving the product a luxurious look. The unity of style in the bedroom can be emphasized by a forged headboard, a footboard with a soft addition and a mirror in the same frame. This will significantly emphasize the classic style in the bedroom.
  • A combination of metal and wood, this version of the headboard and footboard can be made in different colors. The modern design has an antique look that does not disturb the harmony of the overall interior.
  • Openwork - twisted forged patterns are intertwined in the model, creating real works of art. An openwork white headboard in a wrought iron bed can highlight the French Provence style.
  • For oval and round forged beds, manufacturers choose beautiful, rounded elements for headboards, with smooth lines, all kinds of curls, and floral patterns.

For children's forged beds, manufacturers offer simple but interesting ornaments in the form of fairy-tale characters or favorite cartoon characters. For a spacious bedroom, you can safely purchase Italian wrought iron beds, which will fill the room with an atmosphere of luxury.

Particular attention is paid to the legs, which have a large number of design solutions. The imagination of the craftsmen is expressed in intricate forging patterns. The supports can be in the form of a rod entwined with a snake, birds or animals. But most often, craftsmen use smooth square or curved metal legs, which are coated in black, gold or bronze. Rectangular legs can be modified at the bottom, twisted, or bent.

And behind the torso section there is again a straight section of the leg with a round thrust bearing. To preserve the linoleum, plastic tips are put on the legs, which increase the support area. Less commonly used in forged products are wooden legs, which can also have different configurations.

The height of the legs is 25-30 cm. This gives the structure an elegant and noble look.

Wrought iron bed and bedroom area

In small bedrooms with a shortage of sq.m. bulky furniture should not be used. This rule also applies to beds. In such rooms they will already occupy most of the room, so the forged pattern should be simple and the colors should be neutral. In spacious bedrooms, wide beds are more reminiscent of luxurious beds. It would be useful to additionally install a canopy, the frame of which is also made of metal and complemented with decorative elements. The imitation of thin tree trunks with weaving leaves and branches or columns topped with vines looks original.

How to combine with the interior

You can combine a wrought iron bed with almost any interior style. This opportunity exists due to the fact that furniture manufacturing companies offer a huge selection of bedroom interior items. They all differ in color scheme and shape of forged backs.

To make a large bed look elegant, it is recommended to choose a more spacious room for it. For example, beautiful double models will become the central element in a large bedroom. For a small room, smaller products or wrought-iron single beds are suitable, which can just as easily be installed in a spacious nursery.

In order for interior items to look harmonious in the room, it is recommended to fill the room with additional decorative elements. These can be tables with curved metal legs, elegant sconces, a mirror in a metal figured frame.

Also, forged structural elements or other interior items in the room can be supplemented with:

  • glass;
  • skin;
  • tree;
  • bamboo.

Forged furniture in the interior requires the presence of appropriate finishing of walls, window openings, and doors. Properly selected products and decorative elements will create a harmonious image of the bedroom. An atmosphere of comfort and tranquility will reign in it.

Often in rooms where a forged bed is installed, you can see various figurines, candelabra and other antique items. Each element complements the overall picture of the room, making it even more comfortable, elegant and cozy.

Thanks to the variety of models, they can fit into the interior of a room in a classic style. A wrought iron bed with a soft headboard will perfectly complement the elegant look of the bedroom. A mirror in the same shape as the headboard will emphasize the unity of style.

For country style, forged interior items are also quite appropriate. For a harmonious combination with the overall interior of the room, it is recommended to complement the room with cabinets and cabinets with an antique effect. Vases with flowers, table lamps, and wall paintings are suitable as additional decorative elements.

Such furniture will be a highlight in the shabby chic style. It is characterized by various interior items and decorative elements passed on from generation to generation. The room can be complemented with a beautiful chandelier, a table with curly legs, candlesticks, photographs in metal frames. A white bed is perfect in this case.

Artistic forging allows you to select a bed for any room: be it an adult or a children's room. In furniture stores, the choice of models for children's rooms is amazing. Children's forged beds come in several types:

  • single;
  • two-tier;
  • bed hammock;
  • cradle bed for babies;
  • forged sofa bed.

Any of the options is perfect for a children's room. A children's bed made of metal is durable and environmentally friendly. Figured forging will delight children for a long time.

The sophistication and elegance of forged interior items will surprise guests and delight the owners. Such beautiful models with a wrought-iron headboard will last for many years and can be passed on from generation to generation. And to make them look harmonious, you can play with them in the interior by adding various decorative elements or other pieces of furniture that are similar in style.

How to combine a wrought iron bed in a bedroom design

A wrought-iron bed in a bedroom interior should be in harmony with the style of the room and not look like an alien element. First of all, textiles are selected for the product: blankets and pillows. The choice is based on the design of forged elements. Floral patterns are combined with floral patterns and natural fabrics. More strict versions with geometric compositions are combined with the same “fantastic” fabric pattern.

To complete the picture, you can order the same craftsman to make forged cabinet legs or armchairs, a mirror frame or a ceiling chandelier. The pattern on the sides of the bed can be repeated in wooden elements of other furniture, curtains, wallpaper or decorative trim.

Product design

A forged bed is a base made of metal pipes with different sections. This design plays an important role, as it makes the product strong and durable. Depending on how much metal is spent on the bed, its weight is determined, within 30 -50 kg. The entire structure is compactly disassembled and has removable elements, which allows you to easily move it to the desired location.

Photos of cold forged beds can be viewed in specialized catalogs of finished products. If desired, a piece of furniture can be ordered according to your own individual sketches. A forged bed has always been considered an exquisite interior detail, as well as a clear demonstration of the excellent taste of its owner. It will fill the bedroom with comfort and warmth.

Review of the best models

A wrought iron bed is not only beautiful, but also practical. It is acquired for more than a dozen years, but can be inherited. A variety of design solutions allows the consumer to choose exactly “their own” version of the bed style. But he must understand that artistic forging will not be able to replicate the product. It will be one and only. And the ornate patterns will remind you of royal chambers.
