Types of folding sofa mechanisms and their features

Drywall Danogips - catalog with prices.
Many of us don’t even realize what a variety of sofas there are. They are classified according to many criteria, from the place of use to the mechanisms of transformation. For many, choosing a sofa comes down to going to the store, where they already select a model based on the assortment. At the same time, many points are not taken into account and a number of requirements are not drawn up so that it fully satisfies the needs. So let's look at the characteristics of sofas.

A sofa is almost always present in the living room interior, and this piece of furniture can also be found in the nursery, bedroom, and kitchen.

In the main room of the apartment, it creates a cozy stop, serves as a resting place for all family members, and, if necessary, turns into a sleeping bed.

In the kitchen, the product together with the table creates a dining group and can be used to zone the space.

If the bedroom area is small, then a transformable sofa can be an alternative to the bed. Compact dimensions when folded will allow you to save more free space during the day, and at night it can easily be turned into a double bed.

In a nursery, which usually has modest parameters, a sofa with a folding function will provide the child with a decent place to sleep.

Types of sofas by purpose

According to the purpose of the room, all types of sofas can be divided into several categories:

  • office;
  • children's;
  • kitchen;
  • for the bedroom;
  • to the living room.

Office products are made from budget materials, and there is usually no folding device.

A soft object for a child's room is made with rounded corners and equipped with a simple and durable mechanism. An easily accessible place to store toys would be a nice addition. The internal filling of the mattress, frame, and upholstery fabrics must meet environmental safety requirements.

Models for the kitchen require practical upholstery, synthetic filling, and drawers. Elements such as armrests are not provided.

If a sofa replaces a bed in a bedroom, then it must withstand daily unfolding. Latex and spring elements are preferable as fillers. To make the frame, you should choose durable, environmentally friendly materials, the same rule applies to the upholstery. A linen compartment is welcome.

If the product is often laid out in the living room, then you should pay attention to the strength of the transformation mechanism. The service life of the sofa is increased by spring blocks and a wooden frame. Quite often there are models filled with polyurethane foam, latex, synthetic fluff, holofiber, etc. The upholstery is made in different versions: from fabric, leather and its artificial analogues.

Sofas with accordion mechanism

Mechanisms for transforming accordion sofas are becoming increasingly popular. It is very easy to use in everyday life. The principle of the design is to extend the accordion. To do this, the seat is raised slightly. Next comes a click. The back is made of two parts (in its normal state it is folded like a house) and stretches. This is reminiscent of the movement of an accordion.

With the help of such a transformation, a flat surface is formed. When unfolded, the sofa looks like a regular bed. Typically, the “accordion” has removable covers for all soft elements. This makes the cleaning process simple. Almost all models include a linen drawer. In some cases, other decorative elements may be present. It is better if the basis of such furniture is a metal frame, steel frames. You can choose an orthopedic mattress. For a small room, this option is acceptable, but you need to consider how much space the sofa will take up when disassembled. There should be no foreign objects in the way of its layout. There should be at least 0.5 m of space left to the opposite wall when the “accordion” is disassembled.

According to the method of placement in the interior

Depending on the selected area of space for installing the product, two groups are distinguished.

The usual option is to place it near a wall. The designs come in straight and angular shapes. The first ones are usually purchased for small rooms. Corner models are best chosen for large rooms. Pros: versatility, affordable price. The downside is some cumbersomeness.

The sofa, which is located away from the walls, looks interesting. Such models are called island models. Their distinguishing feature is their equally attractive appearance from both the front and rear.

It is important to provide access to the furniture from any side, which is possible provided there is a significant amount of free space. Weaknesses of island models: high cost, lack of sleeping space.

Sofas with Pantograph mechanism

One of the analogues of the “Eurobook” today is the “pantograph”. The mechanism for transforming the sofa is also quite simple. It is necessary to raise the seat at an angle of about 45º. Then they lower him and pull him down and towards himself. The backrest goes down and you get a sleeping place. At the bottom there is a compartment for linen. The advantage of this mechanism, judging by the reviews, is that the seat does not roll out on the floor surface. It simply slides out without touching the covering of the room. The improved design causes the cost of such sofas to increase.

What shapes do sofas come in?

The sofa models are quite varied in terms of their design.

  • Straight products are suitable for any style and can comfortably accommodate 2-3 people. The presence of a transformation mechanism turns the sofa into a double bed.
  • Corner structures have decent dimensions, so they are suitable for large companies. They need space to unfold. Manufactured in left- and right-handed versions. There are also universal products.
  • U-shaped ones consist of separate modules that are combined with a sofa. Such models are very roomy, equipped with drawers, shelves, and a minibar. Thanks to the roller supports, it is easy to change the configuration of the sofa group if necessary.
  • In the shape of the letter "C". Represents the previous version, but with rounded outlines. They look stylish and unusual, but there is no sleeping place provided.
  • Round sofas can consist of individual elements or represent a solid structure.
  • Oval models serve as interior decoration, but at the same time are quite practical.

Separately, it should be said about structures of unusual shape. They will undoubtedly add originality to the interior, but require that the remaining furnishings support the overall design concept.

Sofa book

Book-type mechanisms are one of the oldest and proven options. The buyer is attracted by the ease of folding and the relative reliability of the design. The transformation takes place literally “at the click of a button.” The sofa seat rises to a fixed position (on reaching the desired position, you will hear a characteristic click). Due to the fact that the furniture is folded out wide, a person’s sleeping place is not divided, this indicates the convenience and possibility of using this type as a full-fledged bed. The disadvantage of the design is the need to provide a gap between the wall to allow transformation and the forced straight shape of the back and seat.

Types of structures

Upholstered products are stationary, modular and transformable.

The first group includes models that do not change either shape or size.

Sofas made according to the principle of a designer consist of separate modules. The latter can be arranged at your discretion.

Next, let's look at what types of sofas there are according to the method of transformation. A special device allows you to change the configuration of the product, turning it into a comfortable sleeping bed. Depending on the principle of operation, the following types of mechanisms are distinguished:

  • click-clack;
  • book;
  • accordion;
  • pantograph;
  • dolphin;
  • telescope;
  • puma;
  • lit;
  • French folding bed.

Types and mechanisms of sofas

Folding models

This category includes click-clack designs, a book, and a couch.

Sofa book

Sofas of this design are veterans of the domestic market, but this has not made them less popular. The model is extremely convenient and practical. You can not only sit comfortably on such a sofa - you can sleep on it no less sweetly, even if it is not unfolded. To transform the product into a bed, you need to raise the seat until the folding mechanism clicks, after which the seat is lowered. Assembling the sofa in its original position is done in a similar way. The seat also rises until it clicks, after which it returns to its usual position.

Book sofa mechanism

Pros: compact, equipped with a linen drawer, flat sleeping surface, can be used in two positions.

Disadvantages: to assemble/disassemble the sofa you will have to move/move towards the wall.

Sofa book

"Click-clack"

“The presence of an intermediate “relax” position, sometimes even in two versions, makes these types of sofas as comfortable as possible for relaxation”

This model has a design similar to the sofa-book, but has an improved transformation mechanism. During operation, the latter makes characteristic sounds, which formed the basis for the name of the product. The advanced “click-clack” design allows you to set its backrest in three positions, so you can sit, lie down and recline on it. The presence of an intermediate “relax” position, sometimes even in two versions, makes these types of sofas as comfortable as possible for relaxation. The convertible backrest comes with movable sides that can be converted into comfortable headrests.

Sofa click-clack mechanism

“Click-clack” is compact. Even when fully unfolded, it does not require excessive space, so it often becomes a priority choice for owners of small-sized homes.

Compact sofa click-clack

Sofa-couch

The model belongs to the class of mini-sofas and is designed for the relaxation of one person. The advantage of the product is its compactness. Such a sofa can be installed where other options would never fit.

Sofa couch with sleeping place for one person

Most often, children's sofa beds are offered in this interpretation. They have a variety of designs, are equipped with a drawer for storing linen, are distinguished by the flatness and comfort of the sleeping place and the ease of unfolding.

Roll-out sofas

Eurobook

Sofas in this series are considered to be the most durable and durable. The conversion mechanism installed in them is so simple that there is not even anything to break in it. The entire unfolding process boils down to rolling the sofa seat forward and lowering the backrest into the vacant space.

Transformation mechanism for a Eurobook sofa

Pros: ease of transformation, spacious and flatter than a book sleeping place, wide selection of standard sizes, presence of a large linen drawer, no need to move the sofa away from the wall when unfolding.

Eurobook sofa

When choosing a product in this series, pay attention to the filler. For high-quality models, the soft elements of the back and seat are made of:

  • from spring blocks,
  • orthopedic armor,
  • molded polyurethane foam.

Eurobook "Tic-Tac"

These representatives of upholstered furniture differ in the mechanisms for folding out sofas. Unlike the above-described options, in Tik-Tak models the transformation occurs literally in the air, which has a very good effect on the condition of the floor covering. The wheels do not crawl on expensive parquet flooring, because when unfolded, the seat does not stretch along the floor, but moves along a semicircle path.

Sofa – Eurobook with tick-tock mechanism

The advantages of such structures are obvious. Damage to the floor covering is avoided, plus it does not require much space for transformation.

Eurobook sofa tick-tock

Peculiarities. The set for a sofa with a similar transformation mechanism includes pillows and bolsters, which will have to be removed when unfolding. The transformation mechanism is also interesting. To prevent possible distortions of the sofa parts when they move, the system is equipped with a synchronizing rod and a special spring. The presence of rubber bearings on the supports will protect the floor covering from damage and prevent the sofa from squeaking.

"Dolphin"

Upholstered furniture in this series has angular contraction, which makes the sofas universal. They fit perfectly into spacious living rooms and look no less good in small bedrooms. To transform the sofa into a bed, pull out the handle to pull out a special block hidden under the main seat, and then simply unfold the soft part of the seat itself like a book, forming a sleeping place.

Sofa with dolphin mechanism

Pros: the flat surface of the mattress allows you to fully relax, ease of transformation.

Disadvantages: it is important that the frame of the product is made of really high-quality wood, otherwise the mechanism will not last long.

Roll-out sofa type “dolphin”

"Pantograph"

This sofa has the same advantages as the Eurobook, but is somewhat different from it in the way of transformation. There are no rollers in its structure. When unfolded, the seat does not come into contact with the floor. This type of conversion mechanism for sofas is also called “stepping”. The sleeping part easily moves away from the backrest and falls into a horizontal position. Pantograph sofas are durable, their mechanical parts are wear-resistant, and the entire product is comfortable.

Sofa “pantograph”

"Puma"

Among all types of folding sofas, this design is especially loved by consumers because it has an original, simple and convenient folding principle. The seat rises easily and moves forward gracefully, locking onto the support. The mechanism is quite durable, so the sofa is recommended for daily use, and therefore, “Puma” is often used in bedroom settings. The furniture is compact, but when unfolded it provides a spacious place to sleep with almost invisible joints.

Transformation mechanism for the sofa “Puma”

Peculiarities. "Puma" is produced in straight and angular versions. You need to know that only corner models can be equipped with a linen box; in straight models there is simply no space to place the box.

"Conrad"

Of all the transformers, this is the most convenient option for sleeping. Its design includes spring blocks, which has a beneficial effect on the spine. The mechanism for its transformation is as follows: the part hidden under the seat is pulled out behind a secret loop and pulled out to the maximum possible distance, followed by the seat itself and part of the backrest. After this, all that remains is to raise the soft block in the hidden part, leveling the sleeping place in height.

Sofa with “conrad” mechanism

Pros: the resulting bed is close in its properties to orthopedic mattresses. The relatively large sleeping area allows the sofa to become quite compact when assembled.

Fold-out sofas

Sofa beds

The designs are original, with an unusual folding mechanism that functions like an unfolding scroll. To transform the sofa into a bed, you just need to pull the secret loop and a folding bed with a thin foam mattress will appear from its depths. Folding beds are divided into several subtypes:

1. French model. To transform it, you need to remove the cushions from the seat. The layout of the berth occurs in three stages.

2. American model. This sofa converts into a folding bed in two steps.

American sofa bed

3. Italian model. The most reliable, but at the same time expensive folding phone. Transforms without removing pillows.

French folding beds

They are classified as fashionable furniture. Why do designers think that these types of sofas are worthy of decorating modern interiors? Because they are beautiful, cozy, comfortable, compact, and have a wide seat. The support for the folding part can be made of metal mesh or armor, as well as the type of belt, over which the awning is usually stretched. High-density fabric adds strength and elasticity to the entire structure. Experts recommend giving preference to bases made of armor, and those where their slats are located across the sleeping part, and not along it.

The French folding sofa will fit perfectly into a modern interior

Transformation technology

To unfold the sofa, you will need to remove all removable soft elements (pillows, bolsters, armrests). Now you need to unfold the clamshell links by pulling the mechanism towards you and up. As a result, the transformable part should stand on steel legs. The place to sleep is ready.

French folding bed folding mechanism

Pros: compact when folded, modern design.

Disadvantages: this is more of a guest version of the sofa than a comfortable bed for daily relaxation, since when unfolding it is impossible to form a completely flat surface. I’m also not happy about the need to regularly remove small elements before transformation. Lack of linen drawer.

American folding phones

In our country they are also known as sedaflex or Belgian bed. The unique type of transformation mechanisms of sofas allows you to turn them into a bed in just two steps. The sleeping surface is formed when folded forward, so it stands perpendicular to the back of the sofa. This is the main advantageous feature of Sedaflex. The sleeping place is delightfully flat, moderately elastic, and has orthopedic properties.

Sedaflex folding sofa

Operating principle of the mechanism

A double-folded sleeping mattress is hidden inside the sofa on a folding frame. During the transformation, it is removed from the depths of the seat and unfolded. It is fixed in a given position by durable metal legs. Basically, the mattress is a solid fabric without seams or connecting joints, which makes lying on it extremely comfortable.

operating principle of the sedaflex mechanism

Pros: super comfortable sleeping area. Manufacturers equip the mattresses that go with the Sedaflex series sofas with a special system that promotes complete relaxation and sleep. When unfolded, the floor covering does not deform, so the model can be used even on the thinnest linoleum or parquet tiles. The presence of a rigid frame and an elastic mattress allows the product to withstand heavy loads without sagging or losing its leading qualities for many years.

Comfortable sleeping place of the sedaflex sofa

Where to use

American folding beds are popular among owners of small-sized homes and owners of small offices. This model will be a good solution for furnishing a summer house. When folded, the sofa pleases with its compactness; the only disadvantage of the sedaflex can be considered the lack of a linen storage system. There really is nowhere to place a box for it, but can this inconvenience be considered fatal and refuse to purchase an incredibly convenient and high-quality element of furniture because of it? A practical, stylish and comfortable American folding bed will decorate any interior.

Practical sofa with “American folding bed” system

Italian folding beds

These models of folding beds are also equipped with a two-fold swivel mechanism, however, all parts of the sofa structure, including the backrest, are involved in the transformation. The latter moves along with the soft elements. The main advantage of these types of sofas is their durability. They withstand daily transformations and are ready for weight loads.

“Italian clamshell” mechanism

The Italian version of folding beds is quite unusual in the sequence of its transformation, for which the products were nicknamed “Italian changelings”. They are indeed strikingly different from the serial types already discussed above. If the transformation of the former begins with raising the seat, then in the case of the “Italians” the back of the sofa becomes the starting point. It is moved forward and pressed against the seat, after which the mechanism is turned over and placed on its legs.

Sofa bed with Italian folding bed

Italian folding beds belong to premium class furniture, both in terms of the comfort of the mechanism and the convenience of the sleeping place. The mattress that forms it has a height of fifteen centimeters and a length of up to two meters, which corresponds to the size of a stationary bed. The bulk of Italian folding beds are equipped with mattresses based on spring blocks. To ensure that the element does not move during transformation, it is fixed in the head and foot sections with a guard welded to the frame.

"Accordion"

“Sofas of both the economy and luxury segments are equipped with mechanisms of this type.”

Without exaggeration, upholstered furniture with this method of transformation can be called a bestseller. Mechanisms of this type are equipped with sofas in both the economy and luxury segments. This popularity is explained by the extreme reliability of the design, excellent performance and ease of conversion into a bed.

Sofa with accordion mechanism

The Accordion's sleeping place consists of three parts, one of which, when assembled, serves as a seat, and the other two fold into the backrest. During transformation, the seat is raised until it clicks and pushed forward against the stop. In parallel with this, the back also comes into motion, folding out into the same plane as the seat.

Sofa folding mechanism “accordion”

Accordion type sofas are designed for daily use. Their sleeping area is spacious and can withstand heavy loads. Breakdowns are extremely rare, but if they happen, the problem can be easily solved by replacing the damaged fittings.

The accordion sofa has a spacious sleeping area

Disadvantages include the absence of a laundry niche and the presence of roller wheels, which can cause damage to the floor covering.

Types of frames

The classification of sofas according to the following criterion divides them into frame and soft.

The first type includes products with a rigid skeleton. It determines the shape and is responsible for strength. The material for production is:

  • tree;
  • metal,
  • plywood;
  • wood boards.

Products with a wicker frame are included in a separate group. They are made from natural materials: willow vine, rattan. The advantages of such models are as follows:

  • durability;
  • environmental friendliness;
  • light weight;
  • easy care;
  • attractive appearance.

Due to their increased rigidity, they are supplemented with soft pillows.

Frameless sofas appeared not so long ago. Essentially, they are a bag that is filled with polystyrene foam in the form of granules of a certain size. On top there is a cover made of fabric with dirt- and water-repellent properties. Such products are distinguished by: lightness, safety, practicality, originality, and affordable price. However, not everyone likes the low seat height and poor back support. You should be prepared that volume loss occurs over time. To restore the original parameters, you will have to add filler.

Sofa styles

It would be unfair not to note the wide variety of sofas in terms of stylistic solutions. This is what many buyers rely on when making their choice. Remembering the history of the development of sofas, one can imagine all their stylistic diversity. The main thing that sets a certain style for a sofa is its shape and upholstery.

It is no secret that the classic style of furniture is still one of the most popular and is most often chosen in interior design. Such sofas are made as replicas of historical models, from expensive materials, involve manual labor and a lot of time. Sometimes they are made to order or restored from old antique furniture. Such sofas are expensive and are often used in expensive interiors. Such furniture belongs more to the category of prestigious than functional.

Types of upholstery materials

All types of upholstery that are available can be divided into several groups.

  • Natural. These include: cotton fabrics, leather, silk, jacquard.
  • Blended. They are obtained from fibers of different origins. For example: flock, chenille.
  • Synthetic. The composition contains only artificial fibers.

When choosing upholstery, you should take into account performance indicators: wear resistance, sensitivity to dirt and moisture, cost.

Most often, furniture makers use such materials.

  • Flock tolerates loads well, but is able to absorb and retain odors.
  • Velor is pleasant to the touch, resistant to wear, and practical.
  • Cotton promotes air circulation and is completely environmentally safe, but quickly loses its original appearance.
  • Jacquard gives furniture a rich look. Thanks to the increased density, it will please you with durability. Another plus is insensitivity to fading under the influence of sunlight.
  • The tapestry tolerates any influence well, except sunlight.
  • Chenille is designed for long-term use and can be easily cleaned if dirty.
  • Leather will give the product solidity; it is easy to care for, but it is too expensive. Artificial analogues are cheaper, but inferior in properties.

Upholstery and filling options

Upholstery material and filling have their own technical characteristics, special design and a certain cost. Today, furniture manufacturers use natural, artificial, synthetic textiles and leather materials for their products. Fashionable leather upholstery can also be either natural or artificial. Artificial leather is not inferior in properties to natural leather, but is much cheaper. If the production technology is violated, cracks may appear in the hall furniture, the seams in the product may come apart and the entire aesthetic appearance may deteriorate.

Upholstered furniture for the hall, upholstered in natural materials, looks presentable and expensive. But experts recommend purchasing furniture for schools, hospitals, and libraries with durable upholstery that will last for a long time.

Most often used for upholstery:

  • Flock;
  • Velours;
  • Jacquard;
  • Tapestry;
  • Faux leather.

Upholstered furniture poufs with jacquard upholstery will delight the owner of the house with its durability for a long time. A sofa made of velor is practical, elastic and does not lose color for a long time. The “filling” of the product depends on the function that is assigned to it. If the bed is intended for sleeping at night, then the filler will be one, and if the product will be used for receiving guests, on the balcony or in the hallway, then it will be different. Furniture manufacturers use foam rubber, padding polyester, felt, latex and other types of “filling” for their products. In addition to soft fillers, hard fillers are used for the sets: spring blocks, lamellas and coconut shavings. Latex filler for upholstered furniture follows the curves of the body and distributes the load throughout the musculoskeletal system.

Foam rubber is a cheap and primitive material. A budget option for filler is padding polyester. It is hygroscopic, harmless and resistant to dampness, but has a short service life. Instead of padding, felt is used to provide soft fillers and protect the upholstery from hard springs.

Filling options

Depending on the filling, there are two types of sofas: with a spring block and without.

In the first case, metal springs, which can be located separately or connected into blocks, are responsible for comfort. The latter are often attached to a common frame. This design is durable and comfortable for sleeping.

The second option is considered budget, and is not very suitable for a night's rest. The following materials are used as filler:

  • foam;
  • polyurethane foam;
  • latex;
  • polystyrene foam granules.

Fortunately for buyers, a large number of sofa products are produced, which allows you to select a product taking into account all requirements.
It would be a good idea to test the model you like, check the operation of the mechanism, and evaluate the quality of the upholstery and filling. © 2021 Furniture-one.ru — Copying materials is strictly prohibited.

The cut of the wide back helps to distribute the body load evenly over the entire area of the product;
  • Corners ─ corner sofas consist of several sections. The design of upholstered furniture gives the room a cozy and modern look. The product uses a roll-out transformation mechanism, “clamshell” or “dolphin”.

  • English upholstered furniture is similar in design to American furniture. A distinctive feature is the upholstery fabric, which can have a print in the form of stripes, checks or small flowers. In the English style, upholstered furniture can rarely be found with wood carvings or other “pretentious” decorations;
  • German upholstered furniture is a modern style, which is equipped with innovative transformation mechanisms. For example, sofas with bending backs and armrests can have built-in TVs. And in the chairs there can be hidden buttons that, when pressed, can turn the seated person clockwise.
