No. 1. Carpet
One of the most suitable coverings for the bedroom, warm, soft, pleasant to the touch and cozy. The main advantages of carpet include:
- soft and warm surface. Walking on a floor finished in this way is very pleasant, and the pile can be either very short or quite long;
- a variety of patterns and colors, thanks to which the material can be successfully integrated into the interior of any bedroom;
- excellent sound insulation;
- relative ease of installation.
Long pile carpet can be combined with other types of finishes. So, for example, you can use a soft fleecy rug near the bed, which will be pleasant to stand on barefoot in the morning.
The disadvantages of this coating are obvious:
- carpet accumulates dust a lot;
- the need for frequent thorough cleaning;
- carpet is not the best option for allergy sufferers.
How to care for your bedroom flooring
Dry or wet cleaning is suitable for laminate flooring. But in the second case, be careful with the amount of water on the floor covering. Laminate does not tolerate moisture and must be thoroughly wiped dry. Excessive water will cause it to swell and crack. Do not use cleaning agents containing acid, alkali or chlorine. If you decide to use chemicals, then buy only those specifically designed for laminate flooring.
Parquet boards are also not very friendly with water, especially if they are not varnished. Since the top layer of the coating is natural wood, when it frequently interacts with water it will expand, and when it dries, it will contract. This creates gaps between the dies in which dirt will accumulate. You cannot clean with products containing abrasive particles - they will damage the floor, as well as chlorine-containing compounds.
Quartz vinyl is 100% waterproof. He is not afraid even of copious amounts of water. What makes it similar to the compared coatings is the ban on the use of chlorine- and acetone-containing products, as well as products with abrasive particles, when cleaning. It is better to have cleaning compounds suitable for quartz vinyl, such as Fine Floor or Forbo 888.
When choosing flooring for your bedroom, do not sacrifice one characteristic for the sake of others: few types of decor, but warm; noisy, but cheap and so on. The bedroom is a zone of maximum comfort and coziness in the home, which means the floor material must meet all requirements without compromise.
No. 2. Modular Carpet Tiles
This material is a derivative of ordinary carpet, only carpet tiles have received a number of additional advantages. It is a carpet cut into pieces with a reinforced base: the tiles do not bend and are very dense. Among the main advantages of this material it is worth noting:
- very simple installation that even an untrained person can handle, because working with individual carpet tiles is easy. Moreover, dismantling is also easy, which is also important in some cases;
- ease of transportation;
- efficiency. When laying carpet tiles, no more than 5% of waste is generated, and for carpet this figure can reach up to 20%. The thing is that the width of the carpet roll does not always correspond to the parameters of the bedroom, but with tiles this problem does not arise;
- environmental friendliness. The material does not emit toxic substances, and manufacturers claim that carpet tiles can be used even at elevated temperatures: warm floors, heating devices, etc.;
- sound and heat insulation;
- ability to withstand furniture loads;
- Using tiles of different colors on the floor you can create different patterns.
The disadvantages are the same: a high ability to accumulate dust and the need for frequent and thorough cleaning. Carpet tiles are subject to abrasion, but when it comes to the bedroom, this drawback is not so significant, because the load on the floor is minimal.
No. 3. Solid board
This is one of the most beautiful, natural and warm coatings that makes the bedroom cozy and comfortable. Solid wood planks are often confused with block parquet : these are natural wood coverings that differ only in size. So, a massive board can be from 60 cm to 6 meters in length and from 7 to 20 cm in width. The parameters of piece parquet are more modest, and the length is a maximum of 60 cm.
The main advantages of solid boards:
- high strength and durability. The board can last about 50 years, it can be scraped and restored many times, unlike many other floor coverings;
- excellent thermal insulation properties and warm surface;
- decent appearance;
- environmental friendliness and safety.
Among the disadvantages it is worth noting:
- high price;
- the installation process requires numerous additional materials, and is therefore difficult and expensive;
- sensitivity to changes in temperature and humidity;
- the need for constant care and use of protective materials for wood, otherwise the material may begin to rot or be affected by pests in a few years;
- solid boards cannot be used together with a heated floor system.
Solid board comes in four grades :
- the third and second grades are recommended to be used for rough finishing or painted,
- and the first and highest grades can be used with varnish, wax or oil coating - this way the texture of the wood will not be hidden.
Depending on the cutting and processing of the wood, a solid board may have a slightly different pattern. Wood of almost any species is suitable for a bedroom, since the load on the floor is minimal.
Criterias of choice
It is recommended to compare different materials, taking into account their main parameters: heat and sound insulation qualities, degree of walking comfort, composition. The price and care requirements are also taken into account.
Comparison of materials
On the floor in the bedroom you can use carpet, parquet, laminate, linoleum and mat. These are some of the most common options. Moreover, carpet is used as a floor covering more often than others. It can be used to provide comfort due to its softness. For the bedroom it is better to choose a carpet with medium or long pile. But this option requires frequent cleaning.
Carpet should be chosen with high and dense pile, light colors and increased softness. It has excellent sound insulation properties and floor warmth.
To make a choice, you need to decide on the compatibility of the coating and the intended purpose of the room. For example, carpet is the most suitable material for a bedroom due to a number of factors. But is it possible to lay linoleum in the bedroom? This is the simplest type of coating.
Linoleum is a completely artificial material with average external characteristics. It is not resistant to moisture, but is popular due to its easy care and affordable price. However, it is used in the bedroom, but there is difficulty in choosing the right color.
Linoleum is considered the cheapest material. Of course, it has its advantages, but there are more disadvantages. This is a completely artificial raw material (although there are also natural ones, but they are more expensive).
Laminate is an order of magnitude better quality coating - wear-resistant, does not absorb moisture, and is aesthetically attractive. But its main disadvantages: lack of softness when walking, low sound insulation.
Parquet is a noble covering. In general, natural wood is wear-resistant and absorbs noise. But parquet needs to be treated with varnish. Another option is a mat (woven material without lint). It is rigid, which is not always convenient. However, this material is environmentally friendly.
Which is better for your health?
You can choose carpet made from natural material, parquet, mat. These are environmentally friendly coatings that will not contain harmful components. Linoleum and laminate are artificial analogues. If we consider the possibility of providing a rough surface for preventive purposes (massage effect), then a mat will undoubtedly be suitable, since parquet, linoleum and laminate are coatings with a smooth surface, and carpet is not hard enough to accomplish this task.
The most affordable solution
Linoleum will be cheaper than other options. This is due to its composition (artificial material), as well as average external and technical characteristics.
Carpets and laminate flooring represent the mid-price category. Parquet is more expensive than others.
Difficulty of care
According to this criterion, linoleum is better than other types. Parquet requires periodic coating treatment to maintain a shiny surface. If scratches or chips occur, the surface must be restored. The same applies to laminate. Mats and carpets require dry cleaning, and washing with detergent is required if the surface is seriously soiled.
The choice of material for installing the floor in the bedroom should be based on the characteristics of the load on the coating in this room. To create maximum comfort and beauty, it is recommended to use natural materials.

No. 4. Block parquet
Block parquet, the main parameters of the dies of which have already been indicated above, is a completely natural material that is made from solid wood. Its advantages are similar to those of a solid board, but the main ones are still worth mentioning:
- durability and strength;
- heat and sound insulation;
- the coating can be sanded 8-10 times, giving it its original appearance;
- a huge assortment of colors and textures from those that nature itself offers us, as well as the ability to use parquet blocks of any shape, combine elements of different colors, and create real patterns.
Along with all this, piece parquet retains its high cost , and before laying it, it is necessary to very carefully put the base in order. Such coating also requires special care : correct and regular, otherwise it will quickly lose its visual appeal.

No. 5. Parquet board
Parquet board differs from the two previous coatings in that it does not consist of solid wood. This is a three-layer material : the top layer is valuable wood species, which are responsible for the appearance and basic properties of the parquet board. The thicker this top layer, the better, because in this case you can sand several times. The two bottom layers are most often made of coniferous wood. All three parts are firmly glued together, and the fibers in them are located in different directions to achieve maximum strength of the final coating.
The main advantages of parquet boards:
- great appearance. At first glance, it is very difficult to distinguish a parquet board from a piece of parquet;
- environmental friendliness;
- faster and easier installation compared to solid boards and block parquet;
- pleasant to the touch surface;
- sound absorption ability;
- the price is much lower than that of block parquet;
- Possibility to use with underfloor heating system;
- many styling options: herringbone, wicker, etc. You can even create different patterns.
Minuses:
- the top layer of parquet boards is often so thin that it can be easily scratched;
- fear of moisture;
- restoration of the coating is not always possible, because these are not solid boards. If the damage is significant, then the entire board will have to be replaced.
The best types of flooring
There are many suitable options: let’s look at how they differ, what are the features, advantages and disadvantages of each.
Carpet
Perhaps the bedroom is one of the few in which you should not immediately sweep away the carpet. On the contrary, a pile covering would be very appropriate here.
pros | Minuses |
Warmth, softness. Covering the floor with carpet is the same as laying a huge carpet throughout the entire room. Walking on this barefoot is extremely pleasant. | Difficult care. A regular vacuum cleaner can handle basic dirt, but you will have to make an effort to remove the stain. |
Soundproofing. It is impossible to stomp on the carpet - this means that one person will not wake up the other by waking up early. | Accumulation of dust and animal hair. This type of finishing is not for allergy sufferers - the main indoor allergen literally “lives” in the fibers. |
Aesthetics. One of the few floor coverings that is both stylish and cozy.
A wide range of. Types of carpet differ not only in color, but also in texture. |

Cork floor
When choosing flooring for your bedroom, you shouldn’t limit yourself to the classic options, which we’ll look at below. Take a closer look at the unusual cork floor: especially since the advantages speak for themselves.
pros | Minuses |
Eco-friendly. In production, they use regenerating tree bark (rather than cutting down trees), the crumbs of which are glued together under a press without the use of synthetic resins. | Subject to deformation. The top layer can be dented under furniture legs or sharp heels. |
Elastic. The soft surface of the floor is slightly springy, reducing the load on the spine when walking. | Requires care. Like any natural floor covering, cork requires an additional protective coating, which must be renewed periodically. |
Comfortable. The cork is pleasant to the touch and suitable for walking barefoot. | Not protected from the sun. The floor in a bedroom with south-facing windows may lose color from contact with ultraviolet light. |
Hypoallergenic. Natural material does not cause allergic reactions.
Durable. Serves on average 12-15 years.
Easy to care for. The cork surface does not attract dust, is easy to clean, and is not afraid of water. |
Laminate
One of the classic flooring options for bedrooms is laminate. The popularity of this material is not accidental.
pros | Minuses |
Easy transportation. Unlike roll coverings, laminate packaging can be transported even in a passenger car. | Requires correct installation. To prevent the laminate from starting to creak or swell, the installation must be of high quality. |
Variety of textures, patterns, colors. The choice of lamellas is practically unlimited. | Swells when exposed to moisture. It is better not to choose it as flooring in bedrooms combined with bathrooms. |
Increased wear resistance. Easily withstands loads from steps and furniture. | Controversial environmental performance. Laminate is safe for indoor use, but economy class can release caustic substances into the atmosphere. |
Optimal price-quality ratio. No matter how the prices for laminate flooring vary, it will cost less than solid wood flooring. |
Parquet
Classic parquet boards are an exquisite choice for bedroom flooring, emphasizing the taste and status of the owners.
Advantages | Flaws |
Environmentally friendly. The coating contains only natural materials. | High price. You will have to pay from 4,000 rubles for 1 square meter of durable coating. |
Maintaining microclimate. Natural wood absorbs excess moisture and releases it as the air dries, maintaining ideal humidity and temperature. | Difficult care. From time to time the surface needs to be coated with oil, wax or varnish. |
A variety of shades, textures, sizes. Parquet can be dark (oak, wenge, walnut), light (maple, beech), large-format or small. | Low wear-resistant properties against scratches from furniture and heels. |
Possibility of restoration. You can cycle individual boards up to 2 times, and a solid array up to 7 times.
Long service life. Thanks to scraping, solid parquet can last up to 70 years, and boards - up to 20 years. |

Linoleum
Anyone can handle the technology of laying rolled flooring in the bedroom. What other advantages of this option can be highlighted?
Advantages | Flaws |
Hygiene. Thanks to the absence of joints, there is simply nowhere for dirt to accumulate, making it easier to maintain cleanliness. | Limited styling options. While parquet can be laid lengthwise, crosswise, diagonally, or herringbone, linoleum can only be laid lengthwise or crosswise. |
Extensive range of decorative designs. Different types of linoleum imitate wood, stone, tile, and concrete. | Low level of environmental friendliness. Breathing fumes from PVC coverings in the bedroom is not very beneficial, especially at first, until the smell dissipates. |
Profitable price. Synthetic material will cost much less than its analogues, natural linoleum is more expensive than artificial - but you can and should overpay for environmental friendliness in the bedroom. | Possibility of dents and cuts. The legs of heavy furniture may leave marks on the floor. |
Tactility. Linoleum is not as warm as carpet, but walking on it is no less pleasant. |
Wooden floor
A regular board will cost less than a parquet board, although it looks the part: however, it won’t be difficult to fit it into a modern interior (especially boho, scandi, provence, country).
pros | Minuses |
Variability of solutions. What the final finish will be depends only on you: varnish, preserving the texture, paint it in any color, draw patterns. | Almost 100% probability of squeaks, cracks, and fibers coming apart. |
Cosiness. Wood is a warm material that can make any bedroom more comfortable. | Impossibility of installing a heated floor system under wood. |
Durability. Wooden floors are easy to restore and, with proper care, will last for many years. | Laying work is a labor-intensive process that requires skill. |
The photo shows a painted wooden floor
Tile
Cold ceramics are a great choice for places like the bathroom or hallway, but what about the bedroom?
Advantages | Flaws |
Particular strength. Ceramic tile flooring is a solution that lasts forever. It is not afraid of almost anything, it will last longer than laminate or wood. | Additional costs for heated floors. Without a heating system, the space will be uncomfortable. |
Large selection of colors, types of textures, patterns. For every taste and interior. | Long, complicated installation process. It is better to entrust it to professional tilers. |
Easy care. Can be swept, vacuumed, washed by any means. | Cost per square meter. Especially if you consider not only the material, but also the price of floor preparation and specialist services. |
Self-leveling floor
This interesting solution is recommended for those who want a floor that will last for many years and are willing to pay for it.
The self-leveling floor is strong and durable. Easy to clean (due to the absence of seams), wear-resistant. Manufacturers have a large selection of self-leveling floors that differ in composition, color, and service life.
The only drawback of this option is the complexity of installing the finishing coating and the need for careful preparation. This results in a rather high cost per square meter and complex searches for performers.
No. 6. Cork floor
Cork is another great option for flooring. Its main advantages:
- natural and environmentally friendly, as the coating is made from cork oak bark. Moreover, cork has pronounced bactericidal properties;
- the cork floor is very pleasant to the touch: warm, and when walking it has a little spring, which is good for the spine;
- ease of installation, which is largely achieved due to its low weight;
- the floor surface is non-slip, it is not capable of attracting dust, and the cork is easy to clean;
- has the ability to absorb noise and retain heat;
- high strength, despite the fact that the floor springs a little when walking;
- durability. This coating will easily last 20 years or more.
The main disadvantage of cork flooring is that the surface is delicate, and if a sharp object falls, it can leave a noticeable mark. This material is available in a small variety of colors: from dark yellow to light brown.
Tiles, porcelain stoneware
A non-excluded method of arranging the floor, which is the least popular: the use of tiles.
When choosing a material as a favorite, you should think about whether it is worth making a warm floor in the bedroom. It is the combination of technologies that will give the desired comfort.
No. 7. Laminate
Laminate is an excellent option for the bedroom, which takes the lead in terms of price-quality ratio. This is actually a budget analogue of a parquet board, which is significantly inferior to it in naturalness. A laminate board consists of many layers : the main one is a fiberboard panel, under which moisture-resistant paper is used, and on top there is a film that increases moisture resistance, decorative paper and a layer of melamine resin. You can apply absolutely any image to decorative paper: any type of wood, even stone or leather.
The main advantages of laminate:
- acceptable price;
- a huge assortment: you can choose material of any shade and with any texture, so fitting it into the interior is not a problem. Laminate, by the way, is perfect for all interior styles, from classic to high-tech;
- high strength;
- withstands temperature changes;
- ease of installation and maintenance, scratch resistance;
- relatively long service life.
Laminate is called a cool floor , and ideally it is better to install a heated floor system underneath it. Laminate goes well with a small fluffy rug. You need to buy high-quality material from trusted sellers and manufacturers, otherwise after a while the new floor covering will begin to deform. Although installing laminate flooring is not that difficult, you need to properly level the surface and adhere to all installation rules. Fear of moisture, if laminate is used to furnish a bedroom, is not the main drawback.
Wooden flooring in a new way: what to choose?
The modern construction market happily provides flooring made from environmentally friendly wood, and even with convenient grooves for installation and even a moisture-resistant base. Thus, the common man among them is accustomed to distinguish between solid, parquet and engineered boards. But in fact, massive is a type of parquet, it’s just made from solid wood and differs from a simple board only in the ridges and grooves on the sides. But the parquet board in its pure form already consists of three layers.
So, this is what a modern parquet board consists of:
- Top layer: hard or valuable wood, amenable to sanding and coated with oil or varnish.
- Middle Layer: Softwood cross bars that help absorb expansion of the top and bottom layers as humidity and temperature fluctuate. There may also be various connecting elements here.
- Bottom layer: spruce or pine plywood in 2-3 rows. It helps the parquet board last longer and not bend over time.
Here's how to install it:
Previously, it was fashionable to lay expensive parquet in bedrooms - it did not wear out as much as in other rooms, and was more practical here. But the creaking from it could not please anyone. And today, instead of it, there is a natural solid board:
Engineered plank floors are also good for bedrooms. Neither dirt nor stains stick to this one, the patterns delight with their naturalness, and the wood itself is environmentally friendly. This type of board is also called designed or constructed. Today, these boards are produced into elegant parquet flooring panels or as individual planks that can be combined.
No. 8. PVC linoleum
It is this type of linoleum that we mean when we talk about linoleum in principle. This coating is well known to many of you, and in modern apartments it is used everywhere: in kitchens, bedrooms, and even in the bathroom. Linoleum, which is based on polyvinyl chloride, is one of the most popular materials for the bedroom. Its bottom layer is a backing that provides additional sound insulation, and on top there is a layer with a pattern. You can apply any ornament and pattern, convey any shade, imitate any noble material.
The main advantages of linoleum:
- ease of installation;
- the ability to provide additional heat and sound insulation;
- hygienic and easy to clean;
- high strength, abrasion resistance, moisture resistance. Expensive types of PVC linoleum have high levels of durability and strength;
- low price;
- Huge selection of designs and colors. Linoleum can imitate any type of wood, stone, ceramic tile, or have fancy patterns.
The disadvantages of linoleum as a flooring for a bedroom are insignificant. There are black marks from shoes on it, but people usually don't wear shoes in the bedroom. Linoleum can crack at low temperatures and warp at too high temperatures, but regular bedrooms always have approximately the same temperature. Linoleum may give off a not-so-pleasant smell for a couple of days, and heavy furniture may leave marks – that’s all the disadvantages of this material. This is an excellent choice for a bedroom, especially if funds for renovation are limited.
Requirements overview
The flooring for the bedroom must meet a number of requirements in order to create comfort.
Incorrectly selected material will cause discomfort when walking, which will affect the quality of rest. The characteristics, including the shade and overall design of the flooring, should match the interior of the room. You can choose the right product if you compare existing options. There are many varieties of options for finishing the floor in the bedroom. To find out which one is better to choose, it is recommended to rely on a number of requirements for the coating in this room:
- Comfort when walking. It is important to provide a pleasant feeling to your feet, which is especially important after waking up or if you are very tired.
- Aesthetic appeal. However, it is not enough just to choose a beautiful coating; you need to make sure that it looks organically in the interior: shade, design, characteristics.
- Environmentally friendly. Considering that a person spends a significant part of the day in the bedroom, it is recommended to surround yourself with safe materials. Wool fiber carpet or natural wood parquet are excellent options that do not contain harmful components.
- Soundproofing qualities. At the construction and finishing stage, materials are installed that reduce the intensity of noise propagation. The floor covering is an auxiliary factor, as it partially absorbs noise.
- Difficulty level of care. This criterion can be ignored if the user has enough time and desire. But it is still better to choose a coating option that does not require complex maintenance.
Since the bedroom is a room with low traffic, the wear resistance of the coating does not play as big a role as in other rooms.
But it is not always possible to choose a product that is ideal in all respects. In such cases, it is better to try to determine for yourself 1-2 of the most important factors listed above.
No. 9. Natural linoleum (marmoleum)
Once upon a time, linoleum was understood as a natural covering, and not its PVC analogue. The base of marmoleum is made of cork or jute, and the bulk is made of resin, oil, sawdust, lime and various pigments for coloring the finished material. A protective layer is used on top. As you can see, the coating is truly natural and environmentally friendly , but these are not its only advantages. So, its strengths also include :
- durability, because marmoleum can last up to 25 years and often even more;
- resistance to sunlight and mechanical stress;
- antistatic and moisture resistant, so caring for such a coating will be quite simple;
- antibacterial properties due to the presence of linseed oil and resins in the composition;
- soundproofing properties;
- fire safety;
- the ability to use the coating together with a heated floor system.
Among the disadvantages, it is worth noting the high price: you have to pay for everything natural. Installation of marmoleum requires special preparation, and installing it yourself is not so easy. In addition, natural linoleum is a fairly fragile coating, so you need to be extremely careful when transporting and installing it: falling or bending the material can cause cracks to appear.
No. 10. Vinyl tiles
This is actually PVC linoleum, cut into individual square or rectangular elements. Due to this, the material receives a number of additional useful properties, and its main advantages can be called :
- low cost;
- ease of installation, because vinyl tiles can be laid on any surface, no backing is required, and tiles with a self-adhesive backing are available for sale, and then installation is even simplified;
- absolutely non-slip surface;
- a huge assortment of different patterns, which allows you to decorate the bedroom as you like: create a plain covering, any pattern, etc.;
- PVC tiles are not susceptible to cracks, chips, dents, and are also not afraid of water;
- soundproofing properties;
- strength;
- ease of repair, because if something happens, you can simply cut out the damaged tile and replace it with a new one;
- ease of care.
But such a wonderful, at first glance, coating also has significant disadvantages . So, you need to understand that this is a completely synthetic material, and its durability is not at a high level - on average 10 years. If you plan to use heated floors, then the surface temperature should not exceed 250C. In addition, vinyl tiles are afraid of various types of solvents and acetone.
Liquid linoleum
A self-leveling floor will help create an unusual interior. The design on it can depict whatever the owners of the room want, so the furniture can be standing on the edge of a forest, the sand of a river, over the abyss of the sea or in outer space.
But you will have to pay quite a lot for the exclusive.
Other options
If you are a fan of unconventional solutions, or the style of the bedroom does not harmonize with any of the listed coatings, then you can use other options:
- The rubber coating has excellent heat and sound insulation, is easy to maintain, and very durable. There's not a lot of variety in the look, but it's a coating that lasts forever. You can complement it with a small bedside rug;
- ceramic tile in the interior of bedrooms it is used very, very rarely, because it is a cold coating. If there is a need to complement the room with just such a finish, and the bedroom is made, for example, in a classic style, then it is imperative to provide a system of heated floors. This concerns stone and concrete floors, which today are considered an integral attribute of a loft-style bedroom;
- self-leveling floor – a new product that today is very popular when decorating any type of premises. This is a durable, strong, wear-resistant coating that is made without a single seam. You can use absolutely any pattern, making the floor the highlight of the bedroom, but this is a very expensive coating.
Ceramic tile
Tiles are rarely used for bedroom decoration, mainly because of their coldness. Such a covering will have to be covered with a carpet or use slippers all the time.
At the same time, such a floor will last a very long time, it does not attract dust and dirt, is not afraid of cleaning, and is an environmentally friendly material.
The tiles will be the perfect finishing touch to a classic-style bedroom.
In addition to tactile coldness, the tile will require the attention of specialist layers, and this will immediately increase the cost of finishing.
