Greece is associated with the southern Mediterranean flavor, the freshness of the sea, sunny beaches, olive plantations, mountains and picturesque ancient landscapes. It is not surprising that designers classify the Greek style as a separate category, because it has clear criteria. First of all, it is restraint, rational luxury, comfort, freshness and coziness.
Many represent Greek motifs in the context of ancient culture. However, modern Greek style design has nothing to do with this historical period. Let's look at the main characteristics of the Greek interior and determine how to use its manifestations in home decoration.

Antique and modern Greek style in the interior of an apartment or house
Most often, elements of the Greek style for home decoration are chosen by people who are impressed by minimalism and classics. Massive whitewashed columns with curlicues, sculptures and stucco decoration are a thing of the past. These details are relevant to use in creating an antique space. The Greek style in the interior is more diverse in its manifestations. It can only be identified by accessories, individual decorations and the prevailing atmosphere of a Mediterranean idyll.
The simplicity inherent in Greek design looks majestic and luxurious, despite the lack of expensive decor. The main emphasis is on space, plenty of light in the room, soft colors and smooth transitions. Here you will not see gold, frilly accessories and bright colors typical of Roman interiors. Despite this, the decor looks stylish and unusual. It can't be called boring.
In the space of modern Greece there is a feeling of comfort and lightness. Antique style is heavier for everyday use. It is often used to decorate large houses, cottages and mansions of people who want to emphasize their status through classics and the presence of original works of art in the apartment.

A gym at home is an expensive pleasure; not everyone is ready to sacrifice free space in order to equip a gym complex in their apartment.
- Loggia in the style of a gym
. Setting up a gym in an apartment, especially a small one, is blasphemy. Whether it's a balcony. Lots of ideas. You can install a wall and a horizontal bar, a complex exercise machine or a compact exercise bike. It all depends on the size of the balcony and your preferences.
Attention! If you decide to set up a mini-gym on the loggia, do not forget to think about the ventilation system.
- Loggia-office
. Another idea for decorating a balcony. Personal account in a one-room or two-room apartment? It is hard to imagine! The presence of a loggia will correct this situation. You can create your own corner in the room by placing a computer or laptop there. Hang shelves and install cabinets. This corner will undoubtedly appeal to gamers who want privacy or freelancers who work from home.
The history of the appearance of the Greek style
The original source of the Greek style was the antique interior. It originated during the formation of culture (3rd century BC) and developed gradually, intertwined with Roman motifs. In the process of formation, the style of Greece borrowed eastern trends and finally acquired its features in the era of the formation of stone architecture. In addition to the practical benefits of stone structures, the Greeks began to pay attention to shapes, decorate buildings and create household items that carry an aesthetic meaning.
Ancient artists and sculptors sought to use the wealth of materials to create the outlines of the perfect human body. Statues of gods, athletes, beauties and goddesses have survived to this day. This period was marked by the construction of majestic cultural buildings - amphitheaters, temples, municipalities, etc. The Greeks based their room decoration on mythology, drawing parallels between the world of gods and ordinary people.

Stages of development and decor
The early period is marked by a demonstration of the strength of a developed state. Sandstone and stone were used in construction and decoration. The decorations emphasized power - these were statues of Olympic winners, gladiators and heroes of myths. During the Classical period they began to use marble and surround themselves with finer carved patterns. Modeling and painting appeared on the vases.
The Hellenistic period is Hellas, known to everyone, and a concern for splendor. But in the Greek version, splendor was expressed in more spacious rooms, skillful decorations and subtle taste. This is simplicity and elegance without expensive decorations. Only during the period of Roman rule did gold and expensive pieces of furniture and decor begin to appear in Greek houses. But it was already the culture of another country that conquered Greece.
Main features of the Greek style
To get the perfect combination in the interior, designers use an interweaving of shades characteristic of the direction, home textiles, furniture and accessories. Thoughtful zoning and lighting play an important role in the design of a room. These are the basic principles that decorators adhere to.
- Colors
The color scheme is based on paints that are as close to nature as possible. These are white, blue, deep blue, milky, yellow. The walls and floors are decorated predominantly in white. This can be a base shade of paint, whitewash or wallpaper with shallow embossing. Sometimes unobtrusive decorative plaster is used.
- Accents
To prevent the overall appearance from being boring and monochromatic, contrasting items are used for decoration. For example, a blue blanket and pillows can set off a milky sofa. The walls are decorated with paintings, panels and mirrors in a laconic design with motifs from Greek culture.
- Patterns
Thematic patterns help highlight the historical component and color. Well-known weaving in the Greek style is used to decorate frills of curtains, paintings, bedspreads and vases. The designs are mostly geometric, zigzag, and have rounded shapes.

- Texture
The rough finishing of the floors and walls helps highlight the natural element. The exposed stones and plaster look natural and authentic. Textural elements are artificially formed by stucco. The “trick” of the Greek style is the presence of portals in the walls for installing vases and statues with decorative lighting.
- Spaciousness of the room
Owners prefer this type of decoration in open spaces with a kitchen, living room, separate hallway and full bedroom. Thus, the ideal option for realizing all your ideas is to use a private house.
- Natural lighting
Continuing the theme of unity with nature and the surrounding world, it is worth noting that the Greeks love light. Therefore, all rooms are equipped with casement windows. During the daytime, the room is filled with sunlight, and the white shade of the walls reflects them, saturating the space.
The presented list is far from a complete description of decor in the Greek style. Designers prefer to use it as a base for adjusting to the individual characteristics of each home.

Color palette and characteristic patterns
The interior, which tends to be Greek, uses colors that can be seen walking along the streets of Mediterranean cities. The ceiling and walls of the room are painted in natural colors. Pastel shades are considered the best solution. In thematic decor the following would be considered appropriate:
- olive, green;
- sand, ivory;
- yellow, turquoise;
- azure, dark blue, light blue;
- pure white.
To refresh the picture, it is recommended to mix contrasting variations of all the colors presented. It is better to take a light tone as a base and choose a more dynamic shade that contrasts with it. For example, white and dark blue. The selected composition should look harmonious. The dominance of several tones and combinations of more than 3 active colors is not allowed.
When choosing suitable combinations, take advantage of a modern solution - dark marble floors and white untreated stone walls. The ceiling in this solution is not painted black and does not attract attention. Natural expensive marble can be easily replaced with an artificial substitute.

DIY Greek curtains
As already mentioned, making Greek curtains with your own hands is not at all as difficult as it might seem at first glance. Here is an example of making roller blinds.
- We start with measurements. Roller blinds should be 3-4 cm wider than the window opening, and 9-10 cm longer than it. Don't forget to add seams.
- Using the measurements obtained, we cut out two canvases.
- We sew both parts on three sides, leaving one side for turning the curtain inside out. After this, we sew the entire fabric and leave a small pocket in the upper part on the wrong side - this will be needed for fastening.
- We screw the rings of screws into the upper pocket.
- For roller blinds we make (purchase) cords: one is 3 times longer in length, the second is 3.5 times longer.
- The cords are attached to screwed rings. The one that is longer is passed to the first ring. Next, the cords are drawn along the wrong side of the fabric. To fix the structure, another ring is screwed in at the bottom.
To create roller blinds, you need to cut out and sew two fabrics together.
If you cannot sew curtains yourself, and ready-made options in stores do not suit you, contact a tailor.
Although curtains with Greek patterns are considered an integral part of the Mediterranean style, this does not mean that they cannot be used to decorate rooms in other regions. Ease of operation, long service life, spectacular appearance and functionality - these are just a few arguments in favor of purchasing or ordering Greek curtains for different rooms.
Properties and forms of furniture in the Greek style
In the interior of the Greek orientation, the principle of minimalism is observed. The furniture has a practical load, so there is not a lot of it. Decorative details are made exclusively from high-quality materials. Each item has a monolithic shape and looks good. For the living room, a laconic soft corner with a sofa, two armchairs and a coffee table is enough.
In addition to the kitchen, the apartment has a dining area with a massive wooden table and bulky chairs. The interior in the Greek style is extremely simple, so when buying furniture you need to pay attention to not pretentious things that are understandable to the user. You should not buy products made from genuine leather, silk and velvet fabrics. Try not to overdo it with print and choose upholstery in calm colors.

Decor with antique elements
This is where designers can “break away”, so when finishing with decor: here you can use everything that we know about the ancient culture of the famous Greeks. Amphorae, sculptures, ships, mythical artifacts. The list goes on and on. This is an opportunity for people of art to show their imagination, to become imbued with the understanding of beauty that the ancient Greeks had. Large floor vases with flowers, fountains with plaster deities and other various architectural elements - columns, pilasters, arched vaults - would be appropriate here.
To decorate surfaces, typical patterns are applied to them:
- Zigzag waves - often depicted on curtains, curtains, snow-white tablecloths;
- Ornament of native plants, shrubs, palm branches;
- A circle inscribed in a square as a sign of the ideal achieved by the great thinkers of that time.
The basic rule: perfection can only be achieved by maintaining a balance of modest simplicity and recognizable design elements. Without achieving asceticism of forms, balanced minimalism in decoration, a universally recognized style cannot be achieved. Because this is an indicator of the owner’s correct taste and sense of proportion.
Practical accessories, textiles
Special accessories will help you place accents in a calm interior. They need to be arranged tastefully, maintaining a balance between decoration and too much decor. Pay attention to the unique item - tall vases and amphoras, which at first glance will hint to the guest at the presence of Greek motifs. To add color and freshness to the environment, it is recommended to plant live plants in beautifully decorated pots.
Due to the fact that Greece is located near the sea coast, marine motifs will look good in the design. You will see them in paintings and textile prints. When shopping, give priority to cute little things that create comfort. When buying figurines, choose quality items brought from your travels. They will look organic and highlight your style.

Characteristic Greek colors
Although blue and white are the most characteristic colors of many of the Greek islands and the Greek flag itself, they are not the only colors we are talking about here. So let's expand the color palette. Everyone knows that Greece is an incredibly bright and colorful country. A country where summer seems eternal, and the colors and wonderful sensations are unfading...
- To decorate your balcony, you can choose colorful chairs and tables that make an instant impression. Pink, orange or red are ideal choices.
- There are many warm colors in Greece. So continue the color palette and add them to your pots. This can be done by planting plants in these shades or choosing bright pots.
Greek style ceilings
The ceiling in the house should be high and elongated. On the edge of the walls, it is appropriate to place decorative stucco or a rim that echoes classic antique motifs. Plaster is used for finishing, creating volume and texture. There is an option to install a column or plaster decoration that imitates the vaults of ancient Greek temples.
Important! Due to the narrow vertical columns, you can visually stretch even a medium or low ceiling. Maintain proportions.
A suspended ceiling will look inappropriate. All surfaces must be matte. Stucco molding harmoniously combines with columns, patterns on the walls and the rough texture of untreated stone. The main principle of ceiling decoration is simplicity and the absence of unnecessary details. A chandelier, preferably of light construction, looks expensive, but discreet.

Balcony and loggia design: photo
There are forged fences that copy the style of famous historical styles. These gratings are an easy excursion into time and space, a kind of memory of the past. We installed such a product in one of the houses in the Dubrovka cottage village along Kaluga Highway.
Three huge areas in front of the mansion were “shackled” with massive fences. The lattice canvas is a symbiosis of the Greek meander and the “crossed” pattern. The top, consisting of right angles forming a continuous line, symbolizes virtue. The right corners of the ornament, made of a 16x16mm square section and giving the line additional rigidity, are connected to horizontal rods by means of balls with a diameter of 20 mm.
These balls soften the hard lines of the square and give them a little lightness. The lower part of the canvas is a simplified “crossed” lattice, typical and popular in the 17th century. It consists of paired convex-concave rods with a cross-section of 16x8 mm, forming a continuous belt from the left to the right post. The connected rods form a series of diagonal lines and are connected to each other using round clamps with a diameter of 8 mm, twisted around the rods in 1.5 turns.
A huge number of small clamps adds a characteristic zest to the outline of the canvas. And the final element of the whole composition are pompous stands made of 80x80mm profile pipe and crowned with round balls. The sides of the racks are decorated with ornate leaves and a clamp strip.
There are many interesting ideas for decorating a balcony that can be easily brought to life. After all, for an apartment in a panel house, especially if it is a one or two-room living space, an additional small space will be very useful. Moreover, modern finishing materials and, naturally, our rich imagination will allow us to realize the most daring idea. The balcony can be turned into any functional additional small room.
Before carrying out any repairs, you should carefully prepare the room for such repairs. To make the balcony cozy and nice at any time of the year, and especially in winter, waterproofing
and
sound insulation
using special materials. Then a loggia or a simple balcony will be convenient and comfortable at any time of the year.
Greek style walls
Despite the availability of a ready-made solution - textured wallpaper, designers do not accept their use in the Greek style. Rough plaster is used to decorate the wall. In their work, the craftsmen try to give the walls an aged look and apply several layers of materials to add external charm.
It is better to apply a thematic pattern on a smooth wall. At the same time, the drawing is located in a separate part of the surface and does not stand out, distracting the viewer’s attention from the interior. Many people try to involve an artist in the work so that the painting is unusual. Geometric shapes and clear lines are used as a starting point.

Sports and work area
Gym style balcony
This type of balcony design is the dream of any man who is partial to sports. Even the smallest balcony can be equipped so that you can exercise
, without leaving home. If the size of the balcony is quite large or it is even a loggia, then you can equip an entire gym. For example, put up a wall with a horizontal bar and parallel bars, as well as a bench for pumping up your abdominal muscles. It will be very convenient to wake up in the morning to warm up and work out with dumbbells, and then work on the horizontal bar, which invigorates and sets you up for the work of the coming day.
You can even install a whole complex simulator, which includes many separate systems for training different muscle groups. Some even manage to install a treadmill on a standard-sized balcony. This is of course practical for those who cannot see their life without running, but it is not always convenient. A small-sized exercise bike will fit very well into many balconies. Some gym-style balcony designs look very good. The main thing here is to think through to the smallest detail the location of all training systems, because playing sports still requires quite a large space, as well as fresh air. So be sure to create good ventilation.
Cabinet style balcony
Another option for creating a comfort zone on your balcony. Own is a sign of a certain status. But if the living space of an ordinary one-room or two-room apartment does not allow for such luxury, then this can be done on the balcony. Set up your own corner for your computer or laptop
It will be quite practical and convenient, because it will not require much space, so the balcony will be ideal for this. In addition to the computer desk, you can hang bookshelves or make cabinets.
This design solution will be especially interesting for people who live, for example, in a one-room apartment and earn money by freelancing. It’s very convenient when you don’t have to go to work. I just went out onto the balcony, looked at what was happening on the street and started working right there. For small apartments, where, say, a family of three lives - two parents and a child, it will be very useful to build a computer workstation. After all, a child can interfere by playing computer games. But if a little gambling addict sits on the balcony, he will save his parents from unnecessary irritation.
Greek style floor
Do not underestimate the texture of the floor in the overall ensemble of a Greek interior. It is important to use marble and tiles as materials for its finishing. Mosaic and tile elements in warm colors look interesting. If there is no single solution for decorating the floor, you can lay tiles that imitate the texture of natural stone. A heterogeneous tone will create the effect of unity with nature.
A light-colored floor can be diluted with marine-themed designs. It is recommended to install textile elements only in the bedroom, living room and bathroom areas. A slightly rough and ascetic flooring will highlight the furniture. Combine different options to get the desired result.
The Greek style is easy to understand and implement. Use our tips to make your home a real masterpiece. In addition to beauty, Greek-style rooms will give their owners the unique comfort that everyone strives for.

Balcony in the style of a dining room or kitchen
This design is not common, but in a small apartment, when the kitchen space is used for other needs, this solution to the problem will be quite good. A balcony with good insulation is suitable for any design, even a kitchen one. Some balconies that are of sufficient size can even accommodate household appliances
. There are examples when a miniature kitchen wall included a minimum set of cabinets and at the same time had built-in household appliances. Many people move the refrigerator to the balcony to free up space in the interior room.
In addition, the balcony can be used as a dining room. It is easy to place a table here with a folding design to save space and be more practical. You can place chairs around the table, which can also be folded and even hung on the walls using special hooks. This will allow you not to occupy the balcony space at all and use it as efficiently as possible. At the same time, you can attach cabinets for dishes and decorate the dining room in any style. You can add more plants to create a combined dining room and greenhouse. There are a large number of options and if you combine different styles, you can get a simply stunning designer balcony.
