How the brush cup is attached to the earpiece. Choosing attachments for an angle grinder for wood processing - types and characteristics

Diamond cup for concrete

The diamond cup for grinding concrete consists of the following elements:

  • Steel base of a round “cup” shape of different diameters. In the blind side of the cup there is a hole for attaching the tool to the spindle of an angle grinder (“grinder”) or other high-speed power tool. In the retail chain you can purchase diamond cups with a diameter of 125 to 230 mm (depending on the type of grinder);
  • “Cutting” component – the smallest particles of diamond securely fixed on special platforms located on the open side (cutting planes) of the steel base;
  • A polymer binder used to secure diamond particles.

Types of Diamond Cups

There are several main criteria for classifying a tool, which determine its scope of application:

  • Type of binder.
  • Parameters of diamond chips.
  • Shape and location of cutters.
  • Number of rows – single or double row.

There are three main types of binder material used - organic, metallic and galvanic. The organic binder is the least hard, but has high heat resistance, which allows these cups to be used for work at high speeds. Due to the minimization of the applied effort, this type of cup is most suitable for finishing surfaces, as well as sharpening tools made of hard steel grades.

The metal binder is the hardest, but is subject to strong heating due to the high thermal conductivity of the metal. Therefore, cups based on it are most often used for rough surface treatment. They are also excellent for profiling after rough removal of the surface layer. The galvanic material is based on nickel and also has high thermal conductivity. Cups based on it are often used for cutting technical glass, texture processing of stone, making diamond heads and other works. This type of binder is not suitable for metal processing.

The next important indicator is the grain size of the working coating. Depending on the size of the crumb, it can be fine-, medium- or coarse-grained. The grain size can be determined by two numbers separated by a fraction. For fine-grain cups, the most common size is 100/80, the universal medium-grain is 165/100, and coarse-grain is 200/160. The type of operation depends on the size of the crumb. The larger it is, the larger the layer of material that can be removed and, accordingly, the rougher the surface will be.

Principle of operation

It is well known that diamond is the hardest substance on Earth, which can be used to process not only concrete, but also granite, marble and other hard “stone” materials. The diamond cup for grinding concrete is secured to the spindle of the power tool using its standard nut (some cup designs have a metric thread and are simply screwed onto the spindle).

Next, the tool is given a rotational movement, on average 11,000 revolutions per minute, and by touching the working plane of the cup, processing is carried out - removing sagging, unevenness or microlayers “as clean” (diamond particles moving at high speed remove microparticles of concrete). Moreover, the higher the speed and power of the power tool on which the diamond cup is attached, the higher the speed and quality of processing.

How to use?

Before starting such manipulations, the surface must be moistened with water.
Before starting finishing work with a new disc, a small surface area is treated in the run-in mode - this way, the nozzle will “grind in” better. First, preparatory measures are carried out before the main grinding: the top layer is peeled off and, if possible, stone sections are removed - this way, the load on the disc is reduced. It is forbidden to work on cracked or pointed structures, as this will cause excessive wear on the tool. Before and during work, the concrete surface should be moistened to prevent dust formation. Grinding is performed by smoothly pressing the working unit against the monolith, avoiding pressure. The machine must be held firmly with both hands - this way it is safe and the cup wears out less. Work should be carried out with serviceable and adjusted equipment. In the event of a power outage, the finishing process is temporarily stopped.

Types and scope of application

Depending on the type of processing, several types of cups have been developed, differing in the number of working platforms and the size of the diamond chips fraction.

  • Cup "Double segment". Used for rough grinding of the surface of concrete, brick or “wild stone”. This type of tool allows you to obtain high surface roughness - coarse grinding;
  • Cup "Boomerang". Thanks to the use of a finer fraction of diamond particles, the Boomerang cup is used for finishing processing of concrete and other “stone” materials;
  • The Dolphin tool is characterized as “gentle” and is used for “delicate” processing;
  • Cup "Square". This is the heaviest type of diamond tool for concrete processing. Used for the roughest operations - removing and chipping significant irregularities for the subsequent application of finishing coatings, which include polymers;
  • Cups "Turbo" and "Typhoon". Appeared on the market relatively recently. They have increased durability and wear resistance. They are used for processing reinforced concrete, dense concrete and other stone materials of high hardness and density.

What types of diamond cups are there for concrete grinding?

The diamond grinding cup is a circle, on one side of which there is a working surface with diamond segments, and on the other side there are elements of the fastening system. The design of the tool is determined by the shape and location of the segments on the working surface.

Depending on the design of the working surface, cups are divided into:

  • single row. They are a disc-shaped structure, on the end surface of which diamond segments are soldered in a certain order. Using this tool, rough grinding of the concrete screed is performed;
  • double row. Diamond segments on the working surface of cups of this type are arranged in two rows. Double-row cups are manufactured with different diamond grain sizes and can be used without cooling. They are used at the initial stage of grinding concrete screeds, when it is necessary to remove a thick layer of material. Cups of this type provide rough processing. In cases where a perfectly smooth surface is required, you will need a different profile nozzle to complete the job;
  • with sintered diamond layer. They are a round-shaped tool with an annular sintered diamond-bearing layer. This tool is used for leveling concrete surfaces and processing natural stone. It can be operated with or without cooling.

Sanding cups can have segments of different shapes. The diamond segments located on the body are separated from each other by special grooves called slots. They are necessary to cool the tool during operation. During dry cutting, air passes through the slots, and during wet cutting, water passes through the slots. The final result of the processing performed and the area of application of the tool depend on the shape of the segments.

Depending on the shape of the diamond segments, the grinding cups received the following names:

  • square;
  • boomerang;
  • turbo;
  • typhoon.

Cup square

Cups of this type have the highest specific gravity. They are designed for rough processing of concrete. When processing the surface with a cup with square segments, the effect of chipping the material occurs, which reduces tool wear and increases the productivity of the work performed.

As a rule, square cups are used for surface treatment for further application of various polymer coatings . This is due to the fact that cups of this type are not so much a grinding tool as a roughing tool for roughing operations. After processing with a square, a rough surface with improved adhesion is obtained, which is required when using polymer compounds.

Cup boomerang

The cup received this name because of the shape of the diamond segments. They are used to perform finishing operations. More delicate grinding is achieved through the use of segments with fine diamond grit. This type of nozzle is very popular. They are often installed on hand-held angle grinders. This is due to their light weight and multifunctional base. Boomerang cups work no less productively than double-row cups, but more “softly”.

Cup turbo

The diamond segments on the working surface of these cups are located perpendicular to the direction of rotation of the tool. An almost continuous row of segments ensures a very smooth finish on concrete and stone surfaces. These cups are recommended for grinding small areas of concrete surfaces. With their help you can create perfect chamfers and edges on stone tiles. In addition, turbo cups are used when cutting figured stone products.

Typhoon cup

In appearance, these cups resemble a corrugated surface. They are characterized by high productivity, therefore they are used for work on reinforced concrete, dense concrete, granite and other hard materials. This tool can be used both dry and wet grinding.

Useful tips for selection and operation

The diameter of the diamond cup for concrete should be selected based on the power of the available tool and the maximum possible diameter of the disc. The type of disk is selected based on the type of work planned.

During processing, you should constantly monitor the temperature of the angle grinder body in the area of the electric motor. If your hand feels “hot” or “can’t stand it,” you should immediately stop working and let the grinder cool down.

Otherwise, you risk burning not only the motor stator, but also the rotor. Such angle grinders cannot be repaired - repairs are more expensive than the cost of a new power tool.

Housing for an angle grinder for a 125mm diamond cup for dust-free grinding of concrete.

Hello. Today I will talk about a useful device that will get rid of dust when grinding building structures using an angle grinder (popularly an angle grinder) with a diamond cup. During the process of building a house, I needed a tool that could smooth out small irregularities on the screed before laying the laminate. Specialized hand-held grinding machines are expensive, and it seemed impractical to me to buy such a tool for one-time use. Since I already had a Dewalt 125mm angle grinder and a construction vacuum cleaner, I decided to buy a nozzle with a dust removal pipe. After scouring the Internet, I realized that it would not be possible to buy an original attachment for a Dewalt angle grinder in Moscow stores, since they were not available at that time. Well, the price was somehow intimidating. It was decided to search the Internet for a universal attachment. After a long search, I found what I needed in a Chinese store where I often shop, and I immediately ordered it.

There were doubts about the quality of the material used from which the casing was made, but in practice it turned out that the plastic was very strong and difficult to break. It feels like polycarbonate, elastic enough not to burst if a stone escapes from under the cup. The fasteners are adjustable, but in fact, to secure the diamond cups that are sold on construction markets, you need to completely tighten the screws, pressing the casing against the tool.

And this still turned out to be not enough, since the sealing brush protruded strongly beyond the working plane of the cup. Which would lead to rapid wear and tear. The solution was found by adding a washer under the cup. After this operation everything fell into place. To put on the hose from the vacuum cleaner, I had to wrap a little electrical tape around the outlet pipe of the casing to seal the connection. In order to get the tool to the corner, you need to remove the removable part of the casing. It is not easy to remove; I had to tap it lightly with a hammer. For some reason, there is no risk of spontaneous jumping out when working with the tool. If the vacuum cleaner bag is not clogged and the traction is good, there is no dust at all. Pros: 1.Dust-free work. 2. Low price, relative to the original casing. 3. Durable body. Of the minuses: 1. Due to the design of the case, you have to add a washer under the cup.

I am completely satisfied with the purchase. I think it's worth its price. If you have questions, ask in the comments. Thank you all for your attention!

Variety square

These nozzles have the highest specific gravity.
They are often used to perform work involving simple concrete operations and requiring high productivity. In addition to grinding, the square can have the effect of chipping the material. As a result, the productivity of the work performed increases sharply, and wear of the nozzle will occur much later.

This type of cup should be used in cases where various polymer coatings are to be applied and the surface needs to be treated. In fact, this diamond cup is considered less of a grinding tool and more of a roughing type of roughing tool. After treatment, the surface remains rough.

The result of the treatment is not only the leveling of the surface, but also adhesion to other materials. This is exactly what is required for polymer materials. Also recently discs called turbo and typhoon were manufactured. They are distinguished by high reliability and extended service life. They are used in the processing of such hard materials as reinforced concrete, granite, and super-dense materials.

Types of diamond discs for grinding

Depending on the design, diamond grinding cups for concrete differ in the number and shape of cutters (segments) and are divided into several types. Each disk is designed to work in certain conditions, therefore it has a different purpose and scope of application. We recommend that you familiarize yourself with diamond drill bits for concrete in this article. The photo will help you visually familiarize yourself with the types of diamond cups, which allows you to easily select the right tool:

  1. The single row segment disc has light weight and good performance. The disadvantage is that it is difficult to hold onto the surface being treated.
  2. A double (two-row) segment with a specialized profile is used to eliminate any defects from the concrete surface. This cup profile is suitable for rough work and is used to remove unevenness on the screed, while making it more stable on the surface.
  3. A square is a diamond cup that has: greater weight compared to other analogues, high performance, and wear resistance. The main purpose of the tool is to perform rough work, as a result of which a rough surface with good adhesive properties is created. This grinding is ideal for the subsequent application of various polymer coatings.
  4. Boomerang and Dolphin belong to the category of gentle tools that provide delicate surface treatment. Despite their low weight, the discs have good performance and wear resistance.
  5. Typhoon and Turbo are advanced diamond cups for concrete grinding that have a high degree of reliability and a long service life. Such tools are designed for processing super-dense concrete surfaces, including reinforced concrete, granite and other super-hard materials.

Nuances of work

If you need high efficiency with diamond cups, then you need to follow some recommendations. They will make it easier to work with the tool and extend its service life:

  • Before sanding, it is important to roughen the edge. Excess stone is removed and the load on the tool is reduced. This can be done with various tools; diamond wheels are suitable for materials of medium strength.
  • The cup should not touch the sharp edge of the material. Otherwise, the work tool may be damaged.
  • Under no circumstances should you treat a cracked surface; the result may worsen the defects.
  • The maximum permissible water supply to the area in which the tool will work is 2 atmospheres at a flow rate of about 8-10 liters per minute.
  • Do not apply excessive force when processing the concrete surface with a cutter, otherwise there is a risk of damaging the surface and making it unsuitable for further use.
  • The force of longitudinal movement must also be small. Under this condition, the machine works longer and more efficiently.
  • The cup must be properly broken in. The first 10 meters require operation in soft mode and checking the stability of the actions.
  • Constant and stable operation of electrical networks is required; without this, working with a diamond cup is impossible. We also must not forget that the machine must be in firm hands. Shock loads will negatively affect the operation of the tool and reduce its service life.
