Illuminated mirror: how to choose and make it yourself

Until recently, this stylish piece of furniture was only found in beauty salons and makeup rooms. Over the past decade, it has grown out of the beauty industry and migrated into dressing rooms, bathrooms and bedrooms. Since this product does not belong to the budget category, you can make a makeup mirror with your own hands.

Tips on how to properly position the lighting near a mirror

  • The color of the lamps should be close to the sun (neutral white).
  • Use several types of lamps: above the mirror - neutral white, main lighting - a milky warm shade.
  • Light sources should not be reflected in the mirror.
  • It is better to use frosted bulbs on make-up mirrors to avoid shadows or glare.
  • Use two types of light: diffused (a uniform flow of light from the main lighting, such as a chandelier) and directional (light with a direct flow of light from backlights, light spots, sconces, etc.

  • Neutral white – 3900-4100K.

If there is no pre-installed switch near the place where the mirror is mounted, we can integrate it directly into the mirror. Check with managers for details, as... built-in switches have technical features that may not always be suitable for the mirror you choose

Switch types:

  • Mechanical switch on the side or bottom.
  • Cable with plug and switch for connecting to an outlet

Our qualified managers can advise you on any questions that arise and will help you choose the optimal connection kit.

Frame

As an option, almost any frame from our range (more than 5000 types) can be installed on the mirror. You can get acquainted with them in the section “MIRRORS IN A FRAME”. Check with the manager about the possibility of installing the frame you like.

The size of the mirror in the frame may be several millimeters larger than what you indicate on the website. Therefore, when installing a mirror in a niche, be sure to inform the manager or in the comments to the order.

Types of lamps in backlights and their color temperature

All light sources are divided into two groups: cold and warm light, and have their own color temperature (see diagram below). For example, a warm white color (from 2800 to 3200 Kelvin) is suitable for a cozy atmosphere in a bedroom, and neutral white (from 3500 to 4000 Kelvin) is suitable for more practical lighting. However, color temperature cannot be used to judge the quality of color rendering, since this quality depends on from the design of lamps and lighting itself.

Color temperature warm daylight cool light scheme

ADVICE:

When lighting any room, it is better to use two types of light: natural functional lighting and warmer halogen lighting.

Halogen lamps - warm white

Full halogen lamps on mirrors give a yellow glow and emphasize the shadows in the reflection (this makes the face look tired), but at the same time they make the surrounding colors brighter. For example, halogen lamps enhance the shine of a metal mirror frame. An excellent option if you need to highlight the decor in the interior with lighting.

LED lamps - neutral white

Natural daylight is considered the standard of light, and LED lamps in a neutral white shade (4000-5000 Kelvin) are the closest to it, and therefore the most popular.

Neon lamps - bright colors for decoration

Neon lighting for mirrors is often used as decorative. It definitely won’t be suitable as the main light source, but it will transform the interior.

In addition to its main function, the dressing room mirror performs an important decorative function in the interior, so external design requires a separate approach. The frame should be in harmony with the surrounding environment, match the color palette and style of the room. It is good if it is combined with other details of the room, for example, forged bed decorations can also be present in the frame of a mirror surface. For a young lady’s room, you can choose a model where the frame will match the color palette, most often pink.

The mirror must be selected in a style that matches the overall interior. For example, for a room decorated in a modern minimalist direction, where preference is given to laconicism and geometric shapes, a rectangular canvas in a strict metal frame without unnecessary decorations is suitable. A round wall mirror, completely devoid of a frame, will also look good.

Mansions in a luxurious classic style will be suitably complemented by a large mirror in a light wooden frame, complemented by carvings, gilding and other decorative elements.

Somewhat new for us, but already quite beloved by many, the loft style presupposes the presence of large interior items that are not particularly elegant. A full-length mirror with a rough wooden frame would look great here, especially since the loft style is typical for large rooms with a lot of free space. A small wall mirror also has the right to be placed in loft interiors. It may be completely devoid of a frame, and the surrounding of lamps with light bulbs in industrial motifs will only emphasize the direction.

French Provence is characterized by the presence in the interior of furniture made of natural wood, mainly light colors with elements of aging. A white make-up table with worn paint and cracks would look appropriate here (you don’t have to buy antique furniture, you can add an aged effect yourself).

A make-up mirror in pop art style will look most original. It stands out with its dynamic frame, made in bright colors. The classic rectangular shape of the frame with portraits of Marilyn Monroe, posters, and abstract images will certainly attract curious glances.

How to make a mirror with LED lighting yourself

Make your own dressing room mirror with LED lighting

  • The easiest way to make your own lighting in a mirror is with an LED strip. To do this, you need a power supply, the tape itself, connecting wires and silicone sealant.
  • Cut the desired piece of tape, usually the places where you can cut the tape are marked with dotted lines.
  • Attach the tape to the back of the mirror with double-sided tape
  • Solder the wires taking into account the polarity. There is a way to connect the backlight without a soldering iron - use an LED connector. Insert the wires and close the lid. However, such a catheter costs the same as 5 meters of LED strip.
  • Treat the joints (where the tape was cut) with sealant.
  • Secure the power supply and connect it.
  • And to attach the LED strip to the mirror frame, use a thin LED strip with an adhesive side.

IMPORTANT:

If the backlit mirror is in the bathroom, then the LED strip should be covered with a moisture-resistant coating.

What sizes should I take?

The main part of the cost of a mirror for grooming will be the mirror itself and the lamps for it. Illumination with cheap incandescent lamps is not particularly suitable for home and generally non-professional make-up. In terms of spectrum, they are better than others, see below, but they emit too much heat. The luminous efficiency in the visible light region for conventional incandescent light bulbs is only 3-5%, for krypton ones 6-8%, for halogen ones up to 12%. Both of them practically do not emit ultraviolet radiation, so approx. 90% or more of the electrical power they consume is emitted in the infrared region. Once you sit in front of such a mirror, your face begins to sweat, your makeup floats when barely applied, and small skin defects either hide or stick out too much. This is probably the main reason that illuminated cosmetic mirrors could not enter everyday life for a long time - artists know how to put on makeup very quickly. Therefore, we will need to use quite expensive LED lamps, and quite a lot. The number of light bulbs directly depends on the size of the mirror; By optimizing both together for a specific purpose, we obtain the most economical design.

For a housewife who is not particularly pretentious about her appearance or a young, still fresh girl, a mirror from approx. 40x40 cm. An overhead light on such a mirror is not necessary: pale shadows from the nose and eyelids do not interfere with a quick touch-up. Therefore, for a make-up mirror with lighting for everyday home use, you will need only 6 light bulbs (item 1 in the figure), because their installation step for any mirrors for this purpose is within 20-35 cm.

A stylish woman who has independently developed and painted her own unique look on her face cannot do without top lighting on a cosmetic mirror. It requires at least 3 lamps, otherwise there will not be at least approximately shadow-free lighting. This is the first. Secondly, in front of the mirror, in the process of creating yourself, you have to fidget and twist properly. If the mirror is too narrow, then at times there will be glare in the eyes instead of what needs to be corrected, emphasized or shaded (see below). In total, for independent high make up (qualified makeup), you will need a mirror of 40x60 cm and at least 9 light bulbs for illumination, pos. 2.

A professional-level makeup mirror should be even higher and wider, somewhere from 60x(100-120) cm . Firstly, in this case the lighting needs to be completely shadowless, and even more dispersed overhead light is required. Secondly, the master/craftswoman needs to walk around the client/client, and the one who is her own craftswoman needs to stand up, take a step back and forth, turn around, etc. It is unacceptable to glare into the mirror's eyes, as before. case. So, to illuminate the mirror for professional beauty enhancement, you will need at least 11-12 light bulbs, pos. 3 and 4.

And finally, an important area of application for illuminated mirrors is dressing rooms and fitting rooms . In these, lower light is also added to achieve shadowless full-length lighting; For this you will need from 20 lamps, pos. 5.

Note: the width of fitting room floor mirrors for clothing stores, tailoring studios, etc. public service providers should take from 0.8-1 m, which is required for sustainability reasons. A floor mirror for home use may be narrower. Accordingly, fewer lamps are needed to illuminate it, see, for example. track. video clip:

How to make a mirror frame yourself

The most popular material for the frame is the finishing materials left over after repairs: trim from doors, windows and trimming skirting boards, especially ceiling ones. The latter are great for DIY frames because they are easy to cut, glue, any paint can be applied to them well, and the material is durable.

ADVICE:

If you want to repaint or age the baseboard (or any other material), do it in advance so as not to spoil the mirror later.

  1. Measure the mirror and use a construction saw to cut the required size plinths at an angle of 45°C or cut straight (depending on which joint you prefer: oblique or straight).
  2. First, using silicone sealant, glue the base - a sheet of plywood - to the mirror (determine the size based on the size of the mirror and the width of the frame). This is not necessary, but remember that it is easier to glue the frame to plywood or thick cardboard than to glass.
  3. Glue the plinth joint to joint and press down the entire structure with a weight (distribute it evenly over the entire mirror so that it does not crack) and leave for 24 hours for better gluing.
  4. If the mirror has a horizontal frame, hang it on the wall (choose a mounting method based on the weight of the mirror, for example, a small one will be held on with mounting tape, and a large one with “liquid nails”; if the mirror is vertical, it will look good on the floor near the wall.

What you need to know before attaching a mirror

  1. If the mirror is large and the frame is voluminous, then it is better to mount such a mirror on holders, on average each of which holds 20 kg.
  2. If the walls are uneven, then it is also better to choose holders for fastening.
  3. If the walls are smooth or the mirror needs to be installed on a cabinet door/niche, etc., you can use glue.
  4. To glue mirrors, it is better to use special glue for mirrors or silicone sealant.
  5. To attach a mirror in the bathroom, it is better to use glue with antifungal additives.
  6. Before gluing the mirror to a wall/cabinet/niche, etc., it is important to degrease this surface (wipe with alcohol, wash with soapy water and dry).
  7. If the mirror area is small (from 600 to 2000 cm2) and the thickness is no more than 5 mm, then double-sided mounting tape can be used to attach the mirror.
