Modern design ideas for curtain rods in various interior styles

Cornice material

Curtain rods have a wide range of materials used for their manufacture.

Tree

A natural model, which is made from various types of wood, and with the help of coloring, varnish and tinting coatings can imitate valuable types of wood.

Metal

A durable and quite beautiful design for curtains made of chromed metal will add the spirit of the Middle Ages or features of minimalism and hi-tech to the room. They are made from different metals and coated with special anti-corrosion agents.

Plastic

Plastic products are practical and low cost. The huge variety and choice makes them suitable in any room.

Combined

In their manufacture, materials from wood and aluminum with the addition of stainless steel elements are used. This combination of textures gives a special sophistication to the entire structure.

Types of cornices and their description

They have many types, both with utilitarian and decorative purposes.

Types of designs

The main types of curtain rods.

Tire

It has a plastic base with recesses in the form of tracks along which fastening hooks-runners for curtains move.

Tubular or rod

In the form of a rod or tube. It comes in standard sizes or can be made to your own order. Has one or more levels.

String

Lightweight, almost invisible design for curtains, with steel strings stretched in one or several rows. Suitable for any room design. Quite easy to install.

The photo shows a version of a string curtain rod.

Profile

This type is somewhat similar to a tire one. Such rail models are quite flexible, which allows them to be installed on shaped and even trapezoidal windows.

Baguette

It will be an excellent solution for a room that does not have a ceiling niche. A plastic, wooden, or textile-trimmed baguette will especially successfully hide all unsightly fittings.

Device types

There are two types of device.

Telescopic (sliding)

Multifunctional spacer design. Unlike rod curtain rods, it does not need to be sawed to fit the desired size; you just need to simply fold or unfold this model, a few meters or centimeters.

Turning

Such cornices open and close like doors. Typically, these models are chosen for window openings located deep in the wall or for blind plastic PVC windows.

Control options

The most common types of control.

Electric cornice

Design with an aluminum base, equipped with an automatic mechanism, thanks to which it is possible to adjust the position of the curtains without much effort. This is especially convenient when the cornice is fixed at a high height.

Mechanical (manual)

Control is carried out using a cord. Suitable for regular medium to heavy weight curtains, including Roman and roller blinds.

Classification by number of rows

Products are divided into several types.

Single row

Such models are chosen when you plan to use only one type of curtain.

Double row

The most popular option today. Compared to single-row and other models, the double cornice has the most optimal width for decorative purposes.

Three-row

An indispensable decor for interior renovation. Using this design, you can create unique combinations of curtains or tulle, complementing them with majestic lambrequins.

Three-row cornices

Using three-row cornices, you can create unique combinations of curtains and tulle, complemented by beautiful lambrequins

Nowadays, the range of three-row curtains is extremely diverse. The choice is designed for different buyers, depending on their income level. But the option of a three-row plastic cornice deserves close attention. It will perfectly allow you to combine beautiful curtains in the living room for the ceiling cornice as in the photo with tulle curtains and a lambrequin.

Three-row ceiling curtain rods are gaining more and more popularity due to their useful functionality.

Ordinary, standard cornice. No distinctive features. Only the presence of three slots for hooks. The geometric size of the protruding part is slightly wider than usual. The rest of the design remains unchanged. In a nutshell, three-row wall curtain rods are a rectangular hollow part with three recesses along which plastic hooks run for attaching curtains.

The profile of multi-row tires allows hanging hooks to be moved freely along all guides

At the discretion of the buyer, based on the characteristics of the room, the designers have developed an option to increase or decrease the length of the cornice guide. To shorten the size, just take a regular hacksaw for metal. If it is necessary to increase the length, additional modules or curved parts of the elements can be added to the connection. This option will allow you to create rounded types of curtain rods. We present a photo with a description of the wall mounting.

Components of bus multi-row cornices

In addition to the fact that the presence of three track-slots allows you to simultaneously fasten two rows of curtains and a lambrequin, the front part of the cornice can be additionally diversified with a special decorative insert. To fix it, a special groove is provided on the front part of the curtain. Additional decor at your discretion. There are options from ornate inserts made of expensive metals to ordinary panels reminiscent of wood.

Forms of cornices

Each shape can emphasize not only the beauty of curtains, but also make them functional.

Straight

The simplest, most standard and familiar form. Attaches to the wall using self-tapping screws.

Angular

A necessary detail for a non-standard room layout. It is ideal for soft zoning of space and the design of bay windows or windows located close to the corners.

Round

Made from different materials. Quite often, such cornices are used in the bathroom to complete the interior.

L-shaped

Available in a variety of options. A curved stainless steel rod is more durable and can withstand greater loads. This type is also great for standard plumbing models.

Semicircular

Arc rods are a rather unusual and interesting addition for fastening. They are used for non-standard or bay windows. Another most common way to use such structures is to hang security curtains in the bathroom.

Flexible (radius)

An ideal solution for realizing design ideas. Thanks to the flexibility of this product, you can give the curtains the necessary bends and turns. This model is suitable for decorating non-standard windows, as well as for highlighting individual zones in a room or creating canopies with an oval shape.

Hidden

Will not distract attention from the curtain design. Canvases flowing from under the ceiling with a hidden cornice look especially elegant and graceful.

Material of ceiling and wall cornices

All types are made from different materials, to suit any budget. The structures are made of metal, wood, and plastic. Photos of modern cornices on specialized websites such as Decolux demonstrate the flight of imagination of designers and offer many interior options.

Note!

Wooden cornices remain a classic. Many people prefer them, despite the cost. It is not recommended to use wood in the kitchen and other rooms where there is high humidity.

Metal cornices are in high demand. Naturally, the cost of such a product will be higher than that made from plastic.

Plastic curtain rods, however, are not inferior in position. In their favor is not only the price, but also the ability to hold heavy materials.

Today, mixing cornice materials is common. Manufacturers combine metal-glass, metal-plastic, metal-wood. Combinations make it easier to choose an option for any interior and make this part of the decor universal.

Mounting points

Based on the mounting location, all models are divided into two groups.

Ceiling

Visually increases the height of the room and makes it more majestic. When the cornice is positioned from wall to wall, a truly solemn atmosphere is created. The only disadvantage of the ceiling structure is that it cannot withstand heavy weight.

Wall

Used for suspended or suspended ceilings. The choice is also influenced by the model of curtains; for example, for some, only wall-mounted options are used.

Photos in the interior of the rooms

A curtain rod can be either a visible decoration of a room or a hidden one.

Kitchen

They will add joy and comfort to the interior and set the right tone for the entire kitchen. When choosing, you should give preference to practical matte models, as they are much easier to keep clean.

Living room

Cornice rods are a classic for decorating living rooms. A hidden design using night lighting can also be a rather interesting decorative solution.

Bedroom

Any option is suitable for a room serving as a bedroom. For example, custom-made forged cornices will add individuality to the room and become a real decoration of the interior.

Children's

For the nursery, choose eco-friendly wooden or the most expressive plastic rods. They have a variety of color combinations, are easily combined with the furniture in the room, are easy to clean and create a truly cozy and small world of childhood.

Bathroom

In the bathroom, every decorative element must be properly thought out and calculated. And even the cornice is no exception here. When choosing the right product, they take into account the finish of the walls, ceiling and the size of the room, and the mounting option depends entirely on the strength of the surface used.

Metal options

The main feature of these products is their impressive weight compared to other compatriots; in order to secure it, you need to use high-quality and reliable fasteners.

Today, purchasing them will not be a problem, since there is a huge assortment on the market. Such cornices will suit a richer design up to the Art Nouveau style; thanks to them, the richness of the interior will instantly increase.

It has been noted many times that a metal base looks quite harmonious in rooms with a contrasting and fairly dynamic design.

You can also stand out with the tips for the product, they can be of different shapes and sizes, peaks, balls and bird heads are just a few examples of the variety of such details.

Design and decor options

The decor depends on personal preferences and the specific functionality of the room.

Forged

It looks stylish and attractive, gives the interior a special charm and luxury, and emphasizes the severity of the style. Looks especially impressive in combination with lighter fabrics.

Openwork

Elegant lace of a figured design completely changes the look of even the most ordinary curtains and makes them unusually beautiful and stylish.

Multi-level

The use of such models will allow you to play up the features of the window and achieve the goal set when decorating.

Backlit

Due to such an unusual lighting solution, an interesting and stylish interior is obtained. When soft lighting is turned on, the room visually looks taller and more spacious.

With lambrequin

A rigid lambrequin is attached to the cornice using Velcro and hides it. This decoration makes the curtain composition more complete and significantly changes the interior of the room for the better.

With lens hood

A bulwark or decorative strip designed to decorate the place where the cornice is attached. Spectacular models with additional patterns will especially emphasize the richness and aristocracy of the setting.

With patina

Products with a beautiful antique look, imitation brass or bronze, create a very attractive decorative effect.

How to choose the ideal option for your home?

Many people find it difficult to select even such a small interior detail as a cornice. What should you consider? There are several main criteria.

  • Size. Not all crossbars can be adjusted to size using a hacksaw. In some cases, you need to know the exact length. To do this, you need to measure the window opening using a regular building meter.

The wide range is undoubtedly an advantage of the wall mount.

Important! The length of the cornice must exceed the width of the window by at least twenty centimeters.

  • Features of the premises. You need to consider what room the product is being purchased for: the kitchen, bedroom or living room. For the kitchen, the ideal solution would be a lightweight plastic cornice in the form of a pipe. You can install a wooden one in the bedroom or children's room. A forged crossbar will look harmonious in the hall.

The variety of styles and materials has made this type of curtain rods the most popular.

  • Number of rows. In this case, you need to decide in advance how many curtains will be hung and whether there will be tulle. But sometimes it’s better to buy a two-row model, even if you don’t plan to hang multi-layer curtains at first.

This allows you to most accurately select an individual design for a specific decor.

  • Coloring, design. Window decoration should be harmoniously combined with the overall style of the room. It is necessary to take into account the design style and the color of the curtains when choosing the shade of the crossbar.

They can withstand heavier curtains than with ceiling mounting.

  • Material of manufacture. You should choose the material taking into account the weight of the curtains, the style of the room, personal preferences, and financial budget. The most expensive are forged products. Wood is also expensive and requires additional fasteners. Available models are plastic. However, curtains that are too heavy should not be hung on them.

Such holders must be mounted on solid walls.

Colors

Today, a huge palette of colors allows you to choose the most desired and suitable shade.

White

It is a win-win option for any interior. The design of this color especially emphasizes the elegance of the curtains.

Brown

It is considered an absolute classic in the design of rooms of any size. Brown curtain trims always look very stylish and original.

Black

It looks noble, beautiful and unusual. If this decorative element is correctly combined with additional decor, then the living space can turn into an elegant room.

Wenge

Wenge color is best used when all other furnishings are in light shades.

Beige

The laconic, classic light beige color allows this design to be used in any interior.

Gold

The gold design, combined with heavy canvases, will add an accent to the entire room and will look truly luxurious and rich.

Silver

Popular when decorating a simple but at the same time stylish interior. Silver models will make the room elegant and beautiful. They fit well into high-tech, modern and Scandinavian style.

Red

If you choose the right model design and type of fastening, this bright cornice will become a real decoration of the entire room.

Dimensions

The measurement is calculated depending on the characteristics of the window frame and room.

On the whole wall

Suitable for a rectangular long and narrow room. This way you can visually expand the space and make it airy and light.

On the window opening

Classic accommodation option. This mount demonstrates the window in its natural size and does not distort its dimensions.

Methods for attaching a ceiling cornice in the bedroom

Depending on the type of system, the bar is attached differently. The installation method is affected by the type of coating.

Concrete

If the ceiling is finished with ordinary plaster, the standard method of fastening with dowels and nails is suitable:

  1. Cut the tire molding to size.
  2. Place all the elements on the cornice.
  3. Mark the attachment points, starting from the center, every 50–60 cm to the edges.
  4. Drill a hole in the cornice with a diameter slightly larger than the dowel head and screw it in to the base of the cornice.
  5. Insert another drill according to the size of the self-tapping screw and screw the screw into the base.

It is better to fasten, starting from the center, then from the two extreme points, after which you can screw in the remaining dowels.

The ceiling cornices in the bedroom, photos of which are presented below, have design features. Here the mounting to the ceiling occurs using brackets. This type of system is suitable if the bedroom wall has an outward bend.

To install with brackets, you need to assemble the structure and hang all the elements. Then proceed in stages:

  • mark the location of the brackets along the entire length on the ceiling surface;
  • attach the cornice to the place;
  • screw the curtain hanging system.

There is another method: gluing the structure to liquid nails. Suitable for light curtains only.

Installation instructions:

  1. Mark the mounting points.
  2. Apply primer to the ceiling if the surface is loose.
  3. Degrease surfaces.
  4. Assemble the structure down to the plugs.
  5. Coat the base with glue and glue it.

It only takes a few seconds for the composition to “set”, but you can hang the curtains after 24 hours.

Drywall

For such structures, a butterfly dowel is suitable. It opens into the cavity of the drywall box and secures the cornice.

The sequence of actions is the same as for the bus one. Subtlety in fastening the dowels: to screw, you need to place the “butterfly” in the hole until it stops, then start screwing in the self-tapping screw.

Stretch ceiling

The installation diagram is different from the previous ones.

First, an embedded block is made under the film to install the cornice. They are located between the permanent covering and the tension covering.

Next they follow the algorithm:

  1. Mark the places where the cornice is attached to the suspended ceiling.
  2. Glue the polymer rings onto the film in the places where you plan to drill.
  3. Burn the rings. This will protect the film from damage.
  4. Hammer the dowels with the cornice into the holes of the polymer rings, starting from the center.
  5. Install the structure along its length.

Ideas in different styles

The appearance of the curtain rod should exactly match the style of the entire room.

Loft

Models made of metal or structures imitating water pipes, in combination with bare concrete or brick walls, look truly original.

Classic

Massive wooden or metal planks, decorated with elegant tips, will especially highlight this strict and elegant interior.

Baroque

In this style, windows are often decorated with baguette cornices with figured ornaments or gilding, which echoes picture or mirror frames.

Modern

In this style, preference is given to durable, reliable and functional models. For example, hidden or flatter and inconspicuous structures placed under the ceiling will help in creating a fashionable interior.

High tech

A high-tech interior means practical and discreet models that combine simplicity and avant-garde design. They use metal rods that will not draw attention away from the composition of the window.

In a minimalist interior, laconic matte metal designs are acceptable. A cornice in this style should emphasize all the freedom of space.

Examples for non-standard windows

Cornices for such windows must fit the size of the window frame, match its shape and location.

Bay windows

They are the most original architectural addition that gives any, even the most modest room, an unusual look. Bay windows can be round, rectangular or multi-faceted. To decorate them, semicircular or structural cornices are used.

Beveled

Such windows are decorated with ordinary rods, securing them at a special angle and observing a specific indentation. To prevent the curtains from sliding down, they are firmly fixed on rings or brackets. It is better to use not very thick textiles as curtains.

Triangular

The structures are placed in the shape of a triangular window. Two cornices are often used, this allows you to create original compositions and combinations of curtains.

Attic

Use metal or wooden rods. In order for the curtains to lay correctly and adhere to the window, it is necessary to use special clamps and locking devices.

Arched

For such windows, flexible profile structures are used, which can take the shape of any bend, or rod ones; they are installed above the window and curtains are attached to them with traditional hooks or rings. Such elegant products will be a beautiful completion for the arch.
