History of the origin of tulle
Openwork lace fabric tulle appeared in France in the 15th century. It got its name in honor of the city of Tulle, where it was first invented by local weavers.
For the sake of his chosen one, who expressed a desire to be unidentified at the wedding, the French king issued a decree on the invention of an unusual fabric. The king's requirement was to make such material that, covering himself with it, he would be unrecognizable, but still see everything. Weavers from the city of Tul coped with the task.
The new manufactory pleased the king and his wife. At that time, the fabric was made by hand and was more like lace. It was not easy to purchase it, and only in the houses of the rich they used tulle to decorate their homes.
Tables were covered with tulle fabric; chests were later used as window curtains. Fabric began to be widely used in the 19th century. Tulle was used as a veil for the bride at a wedding, to decorate dresses.
How to sew a curtain for the kitchen with an arch with your own hands
Ready-made arch curtains are sold in showrooms, but if you wish, you can make them yourself. Creating such a curtain is a rather labor-intensive process, but the result will be a unique product.
First you need to decide on the size of the future curtain, its design and fabric for sewing:
- The width of the arch curtain corresponds to the length of the cornice with an extra five centimeters for finishing the edge.
- We also add a few centimeters to the desired length for allowances.
To sew an arched curtain, you will need a pattern.
Note! To form folds and pomp, up to 15-20% must be added to the width of the curtain; sometimes it can be two or even three times the length of the curtain rod.
Sewing arch curtains for the kitchen with your own hands requires a pattern. This can be a simple model, when the length and width are marked on the fabric, and the bottom is cut in a semicircle. Or a more complex option:
- Fold the fabric in half lengthwise. From the top point in the center we begin to draw a semicircle. Its radius should correspond to one third of the window width.
- Cut the resulting semicircle until it becomes a straight line.
- We sew a gathering braid onto it.
- From the bottom point of the curtain on the side where the arch should be, draw an oblique line to the beginning of the cut out semicircle.
- Cut according to the markings.
Sewing an arched curtain takes place in several stages.
You also need to decide on the mounting method:
- duct tape;
- rings;
- hooks
If necessary, attach the fasteners from the wrong side, having first pulled the curtain together.
For a 3x2 window
To sew an arch curtain on a 3x2 meter window, we perform similar steps. The diameter of the semicircle for such parameters will be one meter. We calculate the width of the future curtain based on the expected pomp, size and number of folds (from 3.05 to 9 m).
Composition of tulle fabric
With the improvement of technology, tulle from handmade lace fabric began to gradually transform into a light and airy fabric made from factories. At first, tulle fabric was made from simple threads of natural origin, then silk and synthetic fibers began to be added. The result exceeded expectations; the tulle turned out to be surprisingly light, transparent, airy and incredibly beautiful.
Tulle production is constantly in demand. The composition depends on the type of tulle.
The smooth material is dense and elastic thanks to polyamide threads. When applying a pattern to the canvas, viscose is used, complex nylon threads are used for the facing material. As a weighting agent - lead fiber for edging the tulle.
Tulle fabric is used for sewing elegant and wedding clothes, underwear, for bows and decoration. Curtains are the main use of tulle.
Arch curtain design options
The design of the arch curtain can be completely different. Depending on other details in the room, choose a curtain with pleats or a plain one, made of transparent fabric or a denser material.
Arched curtains can be of different designs.
They also differ in length. In the classic version, the edges of such a curtain reach the window sill, but it is also possible to make a shortened model that will cover only the upper part alone.
Arched curtains can be decorated with various elements. It can be:
- fringe;
- decorative cords;
- lace;
- ruffles.
If necessary, the window textiles can be combined with other decorative elements, you can use contrasting ribbons.
The arched curtain can be combined with light curtains along the edges.
Different fabrics are used to sew curtains. There is a different option for each interior:
- linen;
- organza;
- tulle;
- net.
Transparent fabrics look good on eastern and northern windows, where there is a problem with lack of light.
Natural fabrics are a good solution for a rustic style. The advantage of this curtain model is its shape, thanks to which it gets dirty less, so you can choose the fabric based on external features, and not on performance characteristics.
It is better to give preference to natural materials.
Organza
The first popular type of tulle is organza. Organza, durable transparent material. High-quality threads of viscose, silk, cotton and polyester organza give elasticity and rigidity.
This type of manufacture is popular among designers. The fabric is durable; organza with a printed pattern and unusual ornament looks original.
Rolled
When lifted, roller blinds do not fold into folds like the Austrian and Roman models, but are wound into a tight roll onto a shaft. For cassette models, the shaft is hidden in a box and the curtain is not visible when folded. To achieve comfortable illumination, they can be opened partially, half or completely. Such curtains are attached to the window opening, into the window opening and to the sashes.
The last option for the kitchen is the most convenient, since it allows you to use all the elements of the window structure without restrictions and, if desired, cover not both sashes at once with curtains, but only one of them. In terms of space saving, roller blinds are the most practical of the roller blinds. When unfolded, they fit snugly against the window and do not take up a single centimeter from the usable kitchen area.
They are made from smooth, mostly synthetic, fabrics in rich colors. Recently, roller blinds with photo printing have become very fashionable. You can choose any pattern for them and not necessarily a “kitchen” one, so these curtains will suit any interior. In addition, they can be supplemented with other curtains. For example, to dilute their laconicism and make them match a kitchen with a classic design, you can hang roller blinds with tulle or drapes on the window opening.
Day-night roller blinds can be an interesting option for a small kitchen. They not only look stylish and modern, but are also very functional.
Kiseya
Kisey is a type of tulle. The material consists of polyester and natural threads of linen, silk and cotton. Such fabric components protect the room from excessive sunlight, add shine and strength. Kisea is easy to care for and washes easily.
Threads of muslin with a thickness of 1 to 10 mm. Polyester fibers are added to modern muslin tulle, which makes the fabric practical.

- They do not interfere with the penetration of light, fresh air and heat from the radiator into the kitchen.
- They do not hide space like longer options.
- Suitable for small kitchens with a work area near the window.
Arch curtains are convenient for a small room, as they do not take up much space.
This type of curtain also has its disadvantages:
- They do not shade the room, which is especially noticeable on south-facing windows.
- You can’t close them at night, so it’s better to use roller blinds or blinds with them.
- You cannot hide batteries and pipes behind them.
- It is dangerous to hang them next to the stove.
- Arch curtains will not fit into the modern interior style.
Arched curtains have several disadvantages.
Such curtains are perfect for a rustic-style kitchen, where it is important to keep the window sill space free and where there is no need to diffuse sunlight.
Veil
Voile is a thin and light type of tulle. Soft transparent fabric with a different color palette made of polyester looks gentle on the windows. The veil consists of polyester with the addition of natural cotton and viscose. This fabric is less durable and short-lived and requires careful care.

How to hang and secure tulle
How convenient the curtains will be to use depends on the method of attaching the tulle to the cornice. There are various mounting options. The most popular ones are Velcro, rings, hooks, eyelets and loops. Velcro is suitable for the lightest fabrics; they will not withstand dense mesh or muslin.
Eyelets are rings made of wood or plastic that frame the opening in the curtain. Eyelets are great for classic luxury interiors. Loops, rings and hooks are traditional methods of fastening curtains, characterized by simplicity and conciseness. According to the installation method, the following designs are distinguished:
- Ceiling cornice is one of the most affordable and simplest options. The cornice weighs little and is attached to the ceiling using self-tapping screws. Can be of any length and shape. Included with the cornice are hooks that are attached to the fabric and inserted into the cornice itself. The tulle glides easily across the ceiling, which is practical and convenient.

Blinds
Blinds are the most functional way to stylishly and practically decorate a small room. This type of window decoration has several varieties of modern curtains, but in a small kitchen it is recommended to use horizontal models with plastic or aluminum slats, which visually expand the window and are fixed directly to the sashes.
Horizontal blinds have one advantage that is unique to this type of curtain. In order to regulate the level of illumination in the room, they do not need to be raised. It is enough to turn the lamellas at the desired angle. Thanks to this, even when the slats are turned perpendicular to the window and the kitchen is filled with light, it is not visible from the street.
Many people think that blinds are only suitable for offices. But this opinion is wrong. The color options for horizontal blinds are unlimited. Both single-color options and various color combinations are possible.
Like other lifting curtains, they can be combined with other types of curtains, which makes it possible to take into account all the subtleties of the interior.
It's no secret that most interesting interior projects are developed for spacious rooms with high ceilings. But even if your kitchen cannot boast of large sizes, there is no need to despair. If you approach interior design thoughtfully and with imagination, any room will look decent, and well-chosen curtains will decorate it and give you a good mood.
Room size
For a large and spacious kitchen, curtains made from long modern tulle and luxurious night curtains are suitable. It is more difficult to decorate a small kitchen; an individual approach is needed. Tulle on the window of a small kitchen will give you a pleasant feeling of coziness.
Vertical folds or strips of fabric placed from top to bottom will make the ceiling higher. A cornice wider than the window will hide frame defects and visually increase the space.

Lighting and interior
Kisey, pleated, chiffon will protect the kitchen from direct sunlight when the windows are located on the sunny side. If there is a lack of daylight, use a white tulle mesh or veil.
In a small room with a lot of furniture and kitchen utensils, the first thing to do is arrange the furniture correctly and free up space. Move the stove away from the window to prevent accidental ignition of the curtain.
The fabric chosen is durable, practical, and stain-resistant. The tulle should be easy to care for, as there are constant smells of cooking food, soot and fumes in the kitchen.
The second stage is the design of tulle for a small kitchen. Long curtains are inappropriate in a small kitchen, as they interfere with frequent cleaning and get dirty. Tulle looks great in a small kitchen, matching the interior of the room.
You can hang short tulle with colored patterns in a classic style, blocking visibility from the street.
The oblique tulle looks asymmetrical and emphasizes the look of the interior.
A tulle fabric consisting of two panels with original tie-backs on the sides in the form of bows, butterflies or ropes will create a homey feel. Cross curtains look unique.
When the window is freely positioned, tulle with lurex looks elegant, charming, sparkling and beautiful.
Lightness, excellent tulle design, in the form of an arch, will make the kitchen fabulously attractive. To avoid accumulating excess dust and soot, tulle curtains with fringes and pleats are not advisable in the kitchen.
For a small kitchen with sufficient daylight:
The fabric should be durable and comfortable, easy to wash, not accumulate dust, block excess sunlight, and protect the room from the prying eyes of passersby.
For these qualities, pleated or blue or lilac muslin is suitable. Placed crosswise, such tulle on a window will delight you with freshness and a feeling of pleasant coolness.
It has no equal, a new tulle with photo printing that will fit majestically into the interior of a small kitchen.
When the window is located on the north side, white transparent tulle is recommended for the kitchen. A mesh, an arrangement with patterns or ornaments, made in the form of an arch, in harmony with the interior will make the kitchen bright and free, giving airiness and lightness to the room.
These are advisory tips, and the advantage in choosing tulle for the kitchen is always with the hostess.
Types of short curtains
In addition to the kitchen “classics,” there are several traditional styles of short tulle and roller curtains. The names are given according to the type of transformation or place of origin.
The catalogs offer different types of curtains:
- plain;
- colorful;
- two-color;
- multicolor.
The color block technique involves layering panels of the same fabric in a contrasting color.
Based on the way the fabric is arranged, they can be divided into smooth fabrics (roller blinds, Japanese screened curtains) or with ruffles (French awnings).
Roman
There is a version that short Roman blinds and a round cornice were the first to come up with. It was the red cloak of a Roman soldier, carelessly thrown over the shaft of a spear fixed above the window. When the warrior left, everyone saw that there was no red curtain.
Today this style is used on windows of different rooms:
- kitchen;
- dining room;
- hallway;
- combined living room;
- glazed balcony.
Modern “Roman” curtains are made from various textiles and are very popular among designers.
French and Austrian
French curtain - translucent tulle with many scallops. They are very beautiful, but not practical. The style is more suitable for the bedroom - up to the windowsill or slightly lower. They are used in the dining area - living room or studio apartment.
Austrian curtains combine the features of French and Roman curtains (bottom gathering). A short model with transformation is an excellent kitchen option for east windows. The curtain rises as the sun rises.
Rolled
The method of lifting narrow panels gave this style its name. Short roller blinds have ancient origins. In Asia, curtains for bedroom windows were made using the same principle from thin threads and rice straws (cut bamboo).
Today, analogues of oriental curtains are produced from available materials. They are suitable for kitchens, bathrooms, children's rooms, and insulated balconies. The most convenient are fabric rolls with a lifting mechanism.

Austrian curtains
Austrian curtains look elegant and chic in a small kitchen. The curtains, impregnated with dirt-repellent impregnation, are raised using a rope or a control panel. Semicircular folds of light fabric will ensure the nobility and splendor of the design.
Short curtains up to the window sill are optimal for a small kitchen. Curtains made of tulle or other lightweight material do not interfere with cleaning, do not get dirty and look good.
Curtain color
The color scheme plays an important role in choosing curtains for a small kitchen. Bright, provocative colors of curtains, red, orange, are irritating and not suitable for the kitchen. Lilac and blue colors bring pleasant coolness and are suitable for large windows on the sunny side.
It is better to use calm light colors. Beige, cream, pistachio colors have a calming effect, making the room light, spacious and homely.
