How to design a fireplace in a loft style, general designer recommendations

The ascetic but original loft style is experiencing a real boom today. More and more designers around the world are giving preference to it. And how could it be otherwise in the age of new technologies and practical minimalism? After the strictly Empire and lush Rococo, the world literally needs something very simple and understandable. The loft style in living rooms has become a real find for architects and decorators. But with a small caveat. Even in such a laconic style it is necessary to create an atmosphere of comfort and homely warmth. You ask how to do this? We will answer: just add a fireplace to your interior!

Methods and materials for decorating a living room in a loft style

Floorboards or laminate are most suitable for loft-style flooring. These materials are the best solution to emphasize the minimalism characteristic of this style. It is allowed, but much less frequently, to use stone or decorative tiles to decorate the floor. For the baseboards, solid wood is used, painted in appropriate colors. This move allows you to achieve unity of space.

Much attention is paid to the functionality of the room, the ability to change something at any time, without thereby spoiling the overall “picture”. To visually expand the space of a loft-style living room in an apartment where dark shades predominate, the ceiling is painted dazzling white.

But to follow the original idea of this style, many designers leave the ceilings untouched.

To visually expand the space of a loft-style living room in an apartment where dark shades predominate, the ceiling is painted dazzling white. But to follow the original idea of this style, many designers leave the ceilings untouched.

In the loft style there are no strict rules or restrictions, which gives freedom to implement the most daring ideas.

When decorating walls in a loft style, it is important not to forget that the decoration should be as simple as possible. They can be painted with white paint, but a more interesting solution would be to preserve the brick walls without decorative finishing

A brick wall can not only emphasize the uniqueness of the interior, but also zone the space. An alternative to brick walls would be plastic panels that imitate the pattern and structure of brick, wooden boards or vinyl wallpaper with an antique effect.

A characteristic feature is the combination of modern and old-fashioned furniture.

Loft living room, concrete walls painted in warm shades look appropriate here: ivory, pearl gray.

Furniture can be made of various materials, for example, leather, wood, metal.

Important! When choosing concrete walls, it is important not to overdo it. Unlike brick, which many associate with warmth and comfort, concrete creates a cold and monotonous atmosphere

To increase space, it is better to limit yourself to the most necessary items, a small amount of decor in the form of modern paintings.

Subtleties of the Loft style

To have an understanding of the loft genre, you need to analyze its main characteristic features: a free, bright place with the least amount of furniture and exterior objects; factory and industrial-looking items: uncovered drain pipes, reddish brick, “naked” walls.

  • use of furniture for the purpose of zoning a building;
  • a combination of ancient and modern furniture of various styles;
  • a duet of ancient and modern objects, decorations;
  • cold tones;
  • high ceilings and huge windows
  • non-standard accessories.

By designing in this genre, you gain significant things. The most important thing is that you do not have to choose furniture that matches the subject of the design. Use the old chair and table left over from your ancestors. You will realize that modernism blends perfectly with hi-tech. Secondly, you will not need to hire workers for finishing. Keep the ceiling open if it is made of logs. Or do not cover the walls at all - brick will work perfectly when forming the exterior. And thirdly, the main advantage is the boundless impulse of imagination. Adhering to the basic law - space and a large amount of light in the room, you will create a wonderful design in the loft genre with your own hands.

Placing a stove system to improve art decor

It is worth noting that there are no limits to the perfection of decor, so if every little detail is important to you, then you can consider almost ideal placement of the stove system. To give the appropriate look and correctly install a stove in a house with a factory interior may require you to have knowledge of engineering, as well as the concept of the loft style. Important decor details in your room:

  1. For example, a living room looks more natural and believable if there are additional industrial appliances, they, in turn, detail the style of the room; high ceilings with wooden beams or iron pipes will give a more powerful effect and bring you closer to the desired result.
  2. If the room is located on the top floor of the house or in the attic, then it is better to give preference to small structures that are light in weight and do not place excessive load on the floors. After all, a massive stone or brick oven can damage the floors, which is absolutely unacceptable. Therefore, the best option would be to use a small metal fireplace and create a flexible chimney for it.
  3. Installing a fireplace on the ground floor removes restrictions and makes it possible to use absolutely any objects, regardless of their weight and area. However, the construction of heavy buildings will still require strengthening the foundation, so you need to be prepared for such a turn of events.
  4. A small decorative electric stove can be successfully placed in a kitchen unit or near a recreation area. In this case, the design of the fireplace is selected according to the appearance of the upholstered furniture, cabinets and flooring that will surround the stove system.
  5. An unusual solution is to use a kind of fireplace partition, dividing the room into separate sections. With its help, the zoning of space will acquire a natural appearance, and the entire interior, even despite the division into sections, will acquire a holistic picture.
  6. Based on the size of the room, the area of the fireplace is also selected. A bulky and massive system is unlikely to fit laconically into the interior of a small room, and a small miniature design will be absolutely invisible in a large room.
  7. It is better not to place a stone fireplace next to ordinary brickwork, as it will make the loft-style interior too blurry, displacing important accents. It is best to leave this side of the room undecorated and place the stove system in another place.

We should not forget about the safety and basic rules for operating a fireplace, which include ensuring insulation of the walls, creating a full-fledged chimney, positioning objects and ensuring constant control over its operation.

Do-it-yourself fireplace decoration in loft style

A fireplace in the interior is not only a source of heat, but also a decoration. Different ways of finishing and decorating it can decorate the interior and give it originality. Using the advice and recommendations of professionals, you can complete the finishing yourself. The cladding of the product can be made from different materials: brick, wood, tiles, stone, etc.

The requirements for them should be the following:

  • easy installation;
  • easy care;
  • heat resistance;
  • Possibility to choose color and size.

For independent work, you need to prepare the tool, degrease the surface, clean it from dust, then prime it.

For greater stability of the fireplace, reinforcement should be made by strengthening the mesh with screws. If the choice falls on tiles, then you need to purchase heat-resistant glue, which is applied to the surface for 3-4 elements, otherwise the mass will have time to dry and the finish will not stick. Then the tile is applied, tapped with a rubber hammer and checked for level. After completion of the work, the product is coated with heat-resistant varnish.

A loft-style fireplace can be decorated with tiles.

A simple finishing method that does not require large financial expenditures is to apply plaster. The advantages of using it are that you do not need to strengthen the foundation of the stove and you can update or replace it with another type of decor at any time. In this case, mixtures are selected with the addition of hemp and straw: the more fibers, the stronger the material. After covering, the fireplace can be painted using any pattern or image.

You can decorate your fireplace in an original way using tiles - these are small, box-shaped tiles made of clay or ceramics. This coating will hide visible imperfections, ensure quick warming up and long-term heat retention.

However, there are also disadvantages:

  • is expensive;
  • the work is painstaking and time consuming;
  • heavy weight.

To lay tiles, you will also need a reinforced mesh, onto which a mixture of clay and sand is applied. and pre-soaked products are placed on top.

Brick or stone finishing

A fireplace with brickwork looks elegant in a loft interior. To completely imitate the style, a fireproof, unprocessed material of red or orange color is suitable.

A loft-style fireplace can be made of brick.

For finishing you need to prepare:

  • glue mixture;
  • thermal insulation;
  • brick;
  • joint putty.

When starting work, you need to clean the surface, smooth out all the uneven surfaces, and install metal sheets around the fireplace.

You can do without them, leaving space between the stove and the cladding. The brick is attached from the bottom up using glue, and after drying the seams are rubbed down. If an abundance of metal objects roughens the decor, the warmth of a burning fireplace adds coziness and romance.

A durable coating is created by cladding with natural or artificial stone. The heavy weight will complicate the laying, but even seams are not necessary.

Shell rock is the most commonly chosen material: it is inexpensive and quick to install. But this material is quite soft and can be damaged, and soot gets packed into the existing pores.

Loft and granite are good for facing a fireplace: it is durable and easy to maintain. Marble is also distinguished by its variability in decoration, products from which will decorate any style.

Using wood

Decorating with wooden parts and elements also looks impressive on the fireplace. For fire safety purposes, fire-resistant alder and ash are used, which are coated with a special fire-retardant compound.

Sometimes individual wooden elements are used, which are placed far from the firebox. The fireplace can be made of parquet boards or covered with clapboard.

Design of a living room with an original fireplace

Do you want an atmosphere of comfort to reign in your home, but at the same time the interior looks original and unusual? Then choose an original fireplace for your living room design.

Fire Island

Pictured: Island fireplace with LED lighting

An island bio-fireplace with a massive base will easily become the main decoration of a living room interior in a minimalist style, as in the photo. LED lighting creates the feeling that the fire island is literally floating above the floor. And the resemblance to a real hearth is given by a decorative box that imitates a chimney.

In the flame of candles

In the photo: Candle fireplace with black pebbles

A candle fireplace is an excellent alternative to biofuel models. It gives the same lively fire and at the same time creates a romantic atmosphere. If we are talking about a living room in a classic style, to arrange a candle fireplace you will need a traditional white portal. And in a modern interior there will be enough of a niche filled with large pebbles.

Under the white dome

In the photo: Domed fireplace in the interior of the living room of a country house

A modern island fireplace with a domed chimney in the interior of the living-dining room of a private country house looks like an art object. Due to the absence of a fence, the fire is clearly visible from anywhere in the room, so in this case the fireplace plays the role of a kind of beacon and at the same time unifies the space.

Mobile version of the biofireplace

In the photo: Tabletop biofireplace in the interior of the living room

A tabletop bio-fireplace with a transparent fence is a compact version of a home fireplace. Its main advantage is mobility: if necessary, the table with the burner can be easily moved. This model looks best in an urban interior, but is also suitable for a living room in an oriental style or for a fashionable salon in art deco style.

Warm corner

In the photo: Country style corner fireplace with shelf and wood rack

A sandstone-clad corner fireplace with a shelf, a bench and a firewood rack is an ideal solution for a living room in a private wooden house. And if you want, a country-style portal can be organically integrated into the interior of the apartment by integrating an electric or bio-fireplace into it.

A living room with a fireplace is not just a cozy room where you can spend time with family and friends, but the quintessence of family values, an indicator of respectability and good taste. We hope that our tips will help you find your home and give your interior a new feel.

The loft architectural style (“loft” - “attic”) arose in the forties of the twentieth century in North America - New York, after a jump in land and real estate prices, when poor creative bohemia was forced to move from the city center to the outskirts. And often, in attics or in old empty industrial workshops, which had high ceilings and a lot of light, and, most importantly, low rents. Over the next ten years, these premises were at the peak of fashion, going from an ordinary architectural workshop to stylish original housing, which subsequently gained elite status. Today, such apartments are inhabited not so much by artistic bohemia, but by lawyers, financiers and large entrepreneurs.

Characteristics and main features of the loft style

Loft style design is an excellent choice for creative people. You can implement your plan for home improvement in different ways, but the apartment or house, in any case, will look original and creative.

Nowadays, the loft style has moved to standard apartments with high ceilings and large areas, because not everyone has the opportunity to rent or buy an abandoned workshop, plant or factory, but you can create the appropriate atmosphere in your apartment or house.

Loft style is a harmonious combination of conciseness and functionality

Despite the fact that loft-style design is more suitable for rooms such as an office or den, dining room or living room, it is sometimes used to decorate a bedroom or a room for children.

The loft style interior is very logical and contains geographical, national and historical subtleties

In the loft there are no interior partitions that are familiar to us, much less doors; this style does not imply autonomy, but a single large space, which is divided into functional zones.

The main features of the style are a large amount of natural light, huge windows, a very high beautiful ceiling

It is important to take into account that the ceilings and walls are not finished in the same way as is traditionally customary in all other styles. Brick on the walls in the loft style plays a key role; it is used in almost all possible applications

Fireplace loft

The pioneers of the style were ordinary poor people working in the cultural sector, artists, craftsmen and sculptors. At a time of rapidly rising prices for acquiring land, these people found comfortable and inexpensive housing. They began to use and inhabit industrial buildings, arranging the environment to their liking.

Living in dilapidated buildings with crumbling plaster and paint was a burden for people. Therefore, they put everything in order, brightening and creating comfortable conditions. It was at that time that the loft style was born, and its use began to spread beyond industrial premises, increasingly penetrating into private apartments.

The popularity of the design was picked up by rich people, businessmen and monopolists, who began to purchase such industrial buildings at high prices. At the same time, creative people again had to change their place of residence.

The key purpose of a fireplace in a loft style

A fireplace is important when creating a loft style. It can be used both for its intended purpose and as a unique decorative element, complementing the interior and making it more pronounced. But in any case, the main thing is to create safe operating conditions for the device, and only then focus on maintaining the design. This is the only way to be sure that the fireplace will not become a source of problems, but will become a decoration of the room, making the loft style more vibrant and individual.

Is the stove suitable for interior use?

During the years when the style appeared, the fireplace was also used in the interior. For heating, people used homemade or purchased, the cheapest, potbelly stoves. The need for them arose everywhere; there was no heating in the attics, so in winter it was very cold there. Those who had the money and opportunity built fireplaces, small in size, but allowing them to heat the entire room, and not just a small area, like a potbelly stove.

When creating a loft style, the fireplace takes a worthy position. At the same time, it can play the role of both an antique piece of furniture and a modern one. You just need to choose the right design and place the stove in a suitable place.

Combined with kitchen

It is not typical for a loft to separate rooms by walls or partitions. Quite the contrary. Bohemia, occupying abandoned factories and offices, could not afford to erect ceilings. The kitchen, which was accidentally installed in the same room, performed its usual functions and did not shock anyone. But it is necessary to comply with all style decisions here too.

  • If the owner combines the factory idea with modernity, the kitchen can be steel, even professional, have a large number of work surfaces and steel wall cabinets.
  • If preference is given to royal elegance and classics, it is necessary to combine raw walls with frankly vintage kitchen furniture. Additional oak cornices, balusters and heavy decorative elements are welcome.
  • It should be understood that the refrigerator must be hidden behind a furniture facade of a similar solution.
  • The main thing is that the person entering gets the impression that all the furnishings were inherited or found at flea markets, are not a one-piece custom-made set, but were selected by the owner himself, who has exquisite taste.
  • With the avant-garde it’s even easier. It fits perfectly into the loft. Mix different color blocks, use bright plastic chairs, transparent dishes in flashy colors.
  • Gas and other pipes should not be hidden - they are a symbol of the chosen style.

Furniture selection

All pieces of furniture in the interior are functional and practical. Furniture can be minimalist and modern or vintage.

  • Sofa with leather or textile upholstery. A classic straight sofa in the living room interior will be complemented by a coffee table and a tall lamp.
  • Vintage armchairs look harmonious with modern items. Modern models can be on wheels or have a lightweight, simple design.
  • The TV stand has straight and clean lines. Made from wood or metal frame with a glass surface.
  • The kitchen table can have a solid wooden surface, with the natural pattern preserved. In other rooms, the table and chairs can be mobile and folding.
  • A mattress on a podium or a simple bed frame with a high headboard corresponds to the loft direction.
  • The built-in wardrobe will be closed by a sliding glass door or a thick curtain. A free-standing cabinet can be painted in one color and give the effect of antiquity.
  • Wall racks in the interior will help save space. Shelves equipped under the stairs are used for storing things.

How to place a fireplace?

The fireplace should be located so that it does not interfere with the practical use of the rest room.

Fireplace in the corner of the living room

The corner model has a special design that allows it to fit harmoniously into any type of living room interior. Such a fireplace can be decorated using any materials, placed next to it a couple of cozy armchairs or complemented with a corner sofa.

To ensure that the fireplace does not get lost in the room, it should be installed in a corner that is best visible from different parts of the room.

The photo shows the interior of a classic living room with a fireplace located in the corner.

Fireplace in the center of the living room

Island fireplaces are rare, but they have a very interesting appearance. Such models are mainly used for the design of large rooms. The design is distinguished by the presence of a suspended chimney and the possibility of excellent visibility in all directions, therefore it most often serves as the central element of the living room interior.

The fireplace placed in the middle is visually highlighted due to color or decoration and the main pieces of furniture are placed around it.

Fireplace between windows

It is an effective way of arrangement. However, this option has its drawback: due to heating the external wall, a certain amount of heat will be lost. Thermal insulation of this area will solve the disadvantage.

A fireplace installed between two French windows will look beautiful. It is also appropriate for front or corner placement between two window openings of different sizes.

In the photo there is a fireplace portal between two windows in the design of the hall in the fusion style.

Between two doors

A fireplace placed between two doorways may not be a very convenient option for the living room. Since there is usually a relaxation area around the fireplace portal, family members constantly passing by can interfere with a comfortable rest. Therefore, before arranging such a fireplace, you should carefully consider the layout and furnishings of the room.

Fireplace on free wall

The most traditional solution. It is better to place the fireplace insert near the internal walls to retain heat in the house. A portal with an open flame cannot be installed near wooden objects.

Fireplaces with a traditional portal in the living room interior: photo

Another popular category of fireplaces is wall-mounted models with an architectural portal that beautifully frames the firebox. They are relevant in classic interiors, living rooms in Art Deco, Baroque, Empire, Country, Gothic and Provence styles. You can add a portal to a wood-burning, electric or bio-fireplace. And in combination with the portal, you can use an air humidifier with fire imitation.

Fireplace room in Art Deco style

In the photo: Luxurious fireplace with marble cladding

A wood-burning fireplace with a high portal, trimmed with rare coffee-colored marble, turns the spacious neoclassical living room of a country house into a real fireplace room. The solemn atmosphere of the interior in the Art Deco style is also supported by the design of the ceiling with a luxurious chandelier, focusing attention on the seating area.

Classic white portal with carved decor

Stucco decoration, Venetian plaster, furniture upholstered in cream velor, flower stands on curved legs - such an interior with French charm requires an elegant fireplace. Just like in the photo: with a white portal decorated with patinated carvings and a shelf on which you can place candlesticks or bronze figurines.

Laconic neoclassical

In the photo: Classic fireplace with a white portal

A classic fireplace portal does not have to be decorated with rich carvings. The design of a living room in the neoclassical style will look much more impressive with a laconic fireplace frame. And you can complement it with paired sconces with white lampshades.

Living-dining room centerpiece

In the photo: Fireplace area with high display cases

In a living room design with Art Deco elements, the fireplace area usually takes center stage. Tall paired display cases with an original layout will emphasize its importance in the interior and help to properly organize the space.

Fireplace portal and mirror in the hallway

In the photo: Walk-through living room area with fireplace

The complex geometry of the living room in the photo made it possible to place the fireplace not under the television panel, but in the passage area. This technique changes the perception of space and looks very interesting. And to implement this design solution, you need to choose a small electric fireplace and a compact portal that will not take up much space.

Combined fireplace and TV area surrounded by mirrors

In the photo: Fireplace with a white portal framed by mirror panels

Many people think that fireplaces look good only in spacious rooms, but a compact biofuel model is suitable even for a small living room with art deco elements. To adapt the fireplace to the interior style, the designers of the Fundament group of companies advise supplementing it with a traditional light portal and high mirror panels, which will work to expand the space.

A living room in a neoclassical style on the ground floor of a townhouse is an ideal place for an electric fireplace with a strict white portal. Its architectural decor echoes the stucco moldings on the wall, creating harmony in the interior. A round mirror in an openwork metal frame focuses attention on the fireplace area.

Impeccable symmetry

In the photo: Apartment renovation project in Provence style

The secret of harmony in the design of the Provencal living room in the photo is the symmetry characteristic of classic interiors. A fireplace with a white portal located in the center of the end wall, a carpet and a coffee table set an axis of symmetry, and paired shelves and sofas support it.

Living room in loft style with fireplace

When planning a loft-style living room renovation, it is important to consider the following features:

  1. Lack of partitions, even if the future living room will be located next to the kitchen or bedroom. To divide space into zones, it is better to use conventional methods and objects: bar counter, shelving, multi-level floor, differences in the color of the walls, the texture of finishing materials.
  2. The color of the living room can be either calm, made in a combination of pastel shades, or expressive. It all depends on the personal preferences of the apartment owner and on the effect that he wants to create in the process of applying the loft style. For inspiration, you can use ready-made works taken from the Internet.
  3. The ceiling should be a perfect white color. This way the space will receive more light and air, and the walls will visually increase in height. For decoration, metal pipes, structural reinforcement, wooden beams on the ceiling, a ventilation system, and undecorated stairs (if the room is multi-level) are used.
  4. The floor should be made of wood or laminate. It is better to take rough-hewn wood. Transparent varnish is used to decorate it.
  5. Brickwork, concrete, and plaster are suitable for wall decoration. The baseboard should be wooden, matching the floor.
  6. Furniture should be functional, comfortable, simple geometric shapes.
  7. Availability of modern household appliances and multimedia installations.
  8. The atmosphere of industrialism is well diluted with antiques.

A fireplace will help make the industrial style more homely, cozy and filled with warmth. Historically, a loft is characterized by eclecticism: a high-tech fireplace will be in harmony with pipes and fittings, brickwork of the wall, reminiscent of the industrial past of the home. The fireplace can be placed in one of the walls with a rough finish. It needs to be decorated in a modern style. Such a fireplace will become a link between the industrial past and a cozy homely atmosphere.

Loft is lightness, minimalism, naturalness and harmony. To implement it in the interior style, you don’t need a lot of money, and the repairs will be easy to do with your own hands. In addition, the imagination when creating a loft-style room is limitless.

The only important condition is that the resulting room should be cozy and comfortable for both work and relaxation.

Varieties of styles

In the setting of a “former manufactory,” a live fire is the accent needed to brighten up the minimalist setting. The room with steel stairs, beams, brick walls and concrete warms up and becomes cozy.

The decorative loft style is manifested in additional bright details of fireplaces. The main color chosen for them is black or silver, with the possible addition of bright accents of white or red. Decorative details made from ceramic tiles help create the atmosphere of style. Attention is also focused on unusually shaped doors, devices for storing firewood, and handmade fireplace accessories.

A decorative loft fireplace looks good both with minimalist furniture of simple shapes and with vintage, artsy details and luxury items. In such a room, the fireplace should have a good view from everywhere, it is impossible not to pay attention to it.

Modern loft fireplaces

Fashion trends draw attention to high-tech metal fireplaces made of glass, stainless steel, and various complementary details made of natural stone or ceramics. A minimum of materials is used to create the case, which is compensated by a variety of shapes and design options.

Types of modern fireplaces in loft style:

  • frontal, corner, central-standing;
  • built into the wall;
  • with two- or three-way viewing angle;
  • suspended or supported on the floor;
  • in the form of geometric figures: cube, cylinder, pyramid, hemisphere, triangle;
  • in the form of objects: sailboat, drop, crescent, barrel, bottle.

Central-standing fireplace in loft style
Cast iron stoves correspond to the overtly industrial style of the interior. Modernized “potbelly stoves” and stylized stove-fireplaces are appropriate against the background of a brick wall. They are placed in existing niches, in place of the old fireplace, if there was one.

How retro manifests itself in loft style

Retro trends in industrial themes are not so common, but they look elegant. Cute accessories and pieces of furniture that were in fashion several decades ago add lightness and make the formal loft spaces more “homey.” Bright lamps, wooden chairs and tables, ottomans, paintings in the style of the last century will appeal to retro lovers.

Retro fireplace in loft style

Designers focus on a vintage decorative fireplace, while the loft style acquires softness and simplicity. Steel and cast iron stoves are proposed to fit harmoniously into the interior, finishing around them with natural stone.

Creative carelessness in design

Uncovered building structures, a lot of free space with plenty of light and air, an environment according to your preference without rules - a paradise for a freedom-loving person. Despite the fact that designers have developed recommendations for creating a general style, in such a room you can constantly change and add something.

Custom fireplace in loft style

If the owner of the apartment prefers a non-standard interior, a fireplace in the form of a cast iron barrel, in the shape of eyes or a bottle will harmoniously complement the decor. The combination will be natural and mutually complementary. A loft fireplace returns warmth, fire, and comfort to a former workshop, attic or warehouse.

Taking industrial design as a basis, you can create an environment that is completely different from conventional interiors. Deviation from the canons of interior design creates a feeling of carelessness in style. However, being in such an interior, it is clear how all the details are interconnected, complementing each other and creating an overall complete ensemble.

Lighting in the living room in loft style

One of the main characteristics of loft style design is the lighting of the space. Often these are huge windows from floor to ceiling, this is the absence of curtains or curtains that prevent light from entering the room. Large windows are the main source of light.

A classic of the loft style is to create the impression of unfinished renovation.

The lamps are characterized by a simple and understandable form. Many models are made of metal and glass. Designers often choose high-tech style lamps to decorate living rooms. Lamps on cable systems look impressive as ceiling lighting. Light bulbs hanging from wires, rotating spotlights, and spots will provide high-quality lighting for the living room. An interesting solution would be a lamp where a frame made of welded metal rods is used as a lampshade.

Thanks to the presence of original items, an atmosphere of freedom, creativity, and comfort is created.

Additional lighting is provided by wall lamps installed between the window openings in the hallway area. Spotlights and stage lighting equipment are often used.

The color scheme is selected individually depending on the surface area covered by the brickwork.

Local lighting is provided by floor lamps and table lamps. A very common technique is table lamps with height-adjustable legs. These look great near the sofa, providing comfortable lighting.

Creating home comfort is as important a goal as the embodiment of all creative ideas

Furniture

The loft perfectly combines modern furniture sets and retro models. Glass, metal, wood or plastic products are welcome here. Furniture with leather or textile upholstery in a single color looks very impressive in the living room.

The main element of the room is the sofa, which can be decorated with colorful pillows. In addition, install a coffee table on metal legs or a structure stylized as an antique suitcase.

The photo shows a spacious living room, which is decorated with a leather sofa.

For convenience, choose mobile models on wheels, allowing you to modify the space at any time. Antiques combined with ultra-modern technology will help emphasize the style.

A good solution for the hall would be to use shelving and open shelves made of metal. Also, artificially aged items with wear and tear, such as massive cabinets, armchairs or tables, will harmoniously fit into the loft setting.

The photo shows an industrial-style room with a combined “wall” made of wood and metal.

A bar counter with high chairs will allow you to expand design possibilities and implement zoning. In a studio apartment, this is the most popular option, separating the kitchen and living area.

To arrange a sleeping area in the living room, a laconic wooden bed or a structure with a metal frame is often used.

Style Features

To have an idea of the loft style, it is worth considering its main features:

  • a spacious, open, bright room with a minimum amount of furniture and interior items;
  • items of factory and industrial type: open drainpipes, red brick, “bare” walls;
  • use of furniture for zoning a room;
  • a combination of antique and modern furniture of various styles;
  • a duet of old and new things, decorations;
  • cool colors;
  • high ceilings, huge windows;
  • non-standard accessories.

By creating an interior in this style, you benefit in many ways. First of all, there is no need to select pieces of furniture that are in harmony with each other. Use recently purchased chairs and a table that you inherited from your grandmother. You will understand that modernism goes well with hi-tech.

Secondly, you don’t have to hire finishers. Leave the ceiling open if it is made of wooden beams. Or don’t cover the walls with paint or wallpaper – brick is perfect for creating an interior. And the third advantage is a limitless flight of imagination. Following the main rule - space and a lot of light, you will create an excellent loft-style interior with your own hands.

History of appearance

The origin of the loft style is considered to be 1950. People first started talking about it in America, when abandoned factories and factories began to be used for residential premises. This did not require interior walls; people found refuge in cluttered buildings, gradually equipping them to their taste. Translated from English, "Luft" means attic, which in America is called an upper storage room. Now interior design in this style is possible anywhere.

Fireplace loft

The first users, as well as the inventors, of the loft were simple, poor people, mainly artists, sculptures and other artists. When land prices began to rise rapidly in the 40s of the last century, creators had to find cheaper housing that was more affordable for them to earn money. And so it happened that industrial-type buildings began to be used for living.

But living among the machines and paint falling off the walls was uncomfortable even for ordinary people. And then they began to refurbish their new home, making it bright and comfortable. This moment is considered the time of the birth of the loft, when its use began to go beyond the walls of factories. Finding itself at the peak of popularity, the style was liked by businessmen and lawyers, who began to buy premises at a very high price. And the artists had to look for a place to live again.

Materials used in loft interior

For residential premises planned to be decorated in a loft style, the dominant material is concrete slabs, which go well with ceiling moldings. A wooden board is used to cover the floor or sew up the walls.

  1. Durable glass acts as protective side planes of staircases, as well as partitions and shelves.
  2. Gray concrete can be given a lighter texture by painting with white, but more often only one wall plane is left unfinished.
  3. Interesting variations are created when using brickwork, as well as wooden wall decoration.

Metal in the fashionable loft style also has a worthy use, but it does not dominate. Typically, ceiling beams, pipes, and frames are made from this material.

Fireplaces with panoramic fireboxes in the living room interior

Fireplaces with panoramic fireboxes, allowing you to admire the play of flames from three sides, are among the most popular today. Such models are usually used in the design of multifunctional living rooms, where they serve to zone space. They can be installed in a partition or act as an independent element of the interior - it all depends on the concept of the design project and the layout of the room.

Let's add some lightness! Open bio-fireplace between kitchen and living room

A bio-fireplace with panoramic glazing built into a partition decorated with light brick visually lightens the large-scale design, and it does not seem cumbersome. The interior of the kitchen-living room in a modern style only benefits from this. And thick tempered glass makes the fireplace safe to use.

Design with classics

This is the option chosen by most fans of industrial style in the interior. In this case, all that will remain of the loft itself is the finishing - walls, ceiling, floor and all the “delights” of a non-residential space: beams, pipes, iron or steel elements. All pieces of furniture and art play on contrast.

In such a room, one gets the impression that the owner is a bankrupt aristocrat or duke who left his castle for a life among artists and performers. Furniture tells of a past life of luxury and good taste, while brick or concrete walls indicate a creative nature.

Luxurious furniture with golden patina

The classic style is famous for carved elements on furniture made of expensive wood. Handles on sofas, chairs, tables - everything must meet the given parameters. The upholstery of the sofa and armchairs can resemble silk or velvet. Patterns of flowers and singing birds are also welcome. Numerous paintings are framed in heavy gold or wooden frames. A floor mirror would be a worthy addition.

Carved furniture

Info If your loft interior is already sufficiently filled with stucco, wood and other classic elements, choose minimalist black frames for photographs or reproductions. In this case, the color of the cladding is preferably monotonous, and decorative items with a slight touch of strict modernity.

You can’t do without the iconic classic gypsum plinths and ornaments - don’t be afraid to install them directly on a brick wall - the whiteness of the gypsum will perfectly contrast with the red brick or cold concrete. Plaster rosettes of flowers and leaves, appearing here and there, will also enliven an uncomfortable finish.

Choosing a design

In order for the fireplace to harmoniously combine with the loft-style interior, you will need to spend time searching for a suitable design. And the choice is really huge. These include small brick stoves, huge glass fireplaces, and modest hearths covered with stone or tiles. You need to choose not only taking into account your available budget, but also your wishes for the finished interior. Let's consider several possible options.

  1. Emphasis on modern design. If you are young, purposeful and active, then you probably want to see as many modern details as possible in the interior. And a stylish fireplace will fit perfectly into the created environment. Choose a high-tech stove with an unusual shape and color. It can be made in the form of a rocket or a dome, have two parts, or hang like a drop over the ceiling. High-tech has no boundaries, it is as diverse as loft, so they are friendly and harmonious. You can install a fireplace anywhere; make your choice depending on the design of the structure.
  2. Retro. If you are a lover of antiquity, innovation, technology and smart technology are alien to you, then the retro style is for you. An antique fireplace will take its rightful place near a wall with a modern finish. Remember the combination of two oppositions! If your fireplace is retro, then the decoration should be modern. Play with contrast to achieve an amazing loft that no one can duplicate. An antique fireplace is made of brick and decorated with large natural stone or ceramic tiles to resemble dark brick. Installing a granite stove will cost more, but it also carries the spirit of antiquity and perfectly complements the loft-style interior.

  3. Practicality. Practicality and functionality are important to family people, so a brick fireplace becomes their choice. He should be surrounded by a relaxed atmosphere in which he feels coziness and comfort. The furniture is functional, for example, it can be compactly folded into a niche in a wall or cabinet. There should be nothing superfluous in the interior, only necessary items, safe and practical. A characteristic note of a loft is an unfinished brick wall or a wooden ceiling.
  4. Negligence. If you want to replicate the loft style in its truest form, leave a minimum of furniture in the room. Heating will be provided by a metal stove installed in a corner or near a wall. This style is suitable for young people who rarely appear at home. It’s easier to recreate than others - use any pieces of furniture you have at home and are collecting dust in the attic. And you don’t even have to sew up a hole in the sofa - you can, on the contrary, focus attention on it by sewing it with thread or painting the edges with paint.

In the loft style, any fireplace finds its rightful place. The only exceptions are classic options with stucco, white marble and carvings. Such stoves will spoil the overall impression of the design, making it overly pretentious and imposing.

Who prefers loft style in the interior?

The loft style, due to its extravagance, is not suitable for all people. I like this interior best:

  • people of creative professions for whom the relaxed loft style will allow them to both work and relax in its atmosphere. An industrial-style space can easily be transformed from a home into a workshop, exhibition gallery or filming pavilion;
  • to young people, because it expresses the simplicity, freedom and ease that are so characteristic of them. It is unlikely that the loft style will suit families with children;
  • those who have a limited budget for renovations, since they require a minimum of finishing materials, effort and furniture;
  • owners of open-plan apartments who do not want extra walls and partitions are attracted by space, freedom, lightness and style.

Warm up the space

Former factory buildings often did not have central heating. Therefore, the presence of a fireplace in lofts was not a luxury, but a necessity. In such spaces, cheap wood-burning stoves and homemade fireplaces made from scrap materials turned out to be appropriate. For example, the icons of modern design - the Focus fireplaces of plastic sculptural forms, created by Dominique Imbert, appeared out of the urgent need to heat an art studio in an abandoned building.
