Yarn for crocheting rugs
Floor mats can be knitted from different materials.
Yarns for rugs known to me:
- polyester cord
- knitted
- plastic bags
- acrylic, wool, cotton
- leg-split
Maybe I don’t know something, tell me.
Each of them is good and suitable for knitting rugs, but has its own characteristics, advantages and disadvantages.
Rugs made from any yarn can be machine washed at 30 degrees and then dried flat on the floor.
And attention! Recommendations for yarn consumption and hook number are approximate, so to speak, average. No one can say exactly how much yarn will be used for your product; everything will depend on the pattern, model, and size. And take the hook that is more convenient for you to knit.
Polyester cord
Relatively recently, carpets and rugs began to be knitted from polyester cord. This is the same material from which the “Grand” and “Magnificent” carpets are knitted; many of you have probably heard such names. But of course any other products.
The pattern of the “Magnificent” carpet is here>>.
Despite the fact that this material is synthetic, it looks like natural, is soft to the touch, stretches well, is springy, does not fade, does not collect dust and does not become electrified.
It makes simply gorgeous carpets; rugs in the form of napkins, knitted according to the same patterns as openwork thin napkins, are especially popular. They can be laid in the most stylish interior in the living room. A carpet made from cord is voluminous and looks rich and elegant.
For knitting carpets, it is recommended to choose a polyester cord with a core, also called “cord in a cord”, with a diameter of 4.5-5 mm.
You can buy it in online stores; the range is now quite large and the color range is varied.
Consumption: for a rug with a diameter of one meter - approximately 600 meters of cord, for a rug with a diameter of two meters - 2000 m.
Recommended hook number is 7.
Disadvantages : Perhaps the only disadvantage of this material is its high cost: 2.5-2.8 rubles per meter.
Knitted (tape) yarn
No less popular is knitted yarn for crochet rugs. Or another name - ribbon, which probably characterizes its essence: fabric cut into ribbons 2-3 cm wide, which are rolled into a tube. This is the kind of yarn our great-grandmothers have long used to knit circles for the floor.
Even now, needlewomen often make it with their own hands from old knitted T-shirts.
But factory production of knitted yarn is now well established and you can purchase it both online and in handicraft stores.
The yarn is made from cotton jersey, sometimes with the addition of polyester.
The most used brands are “Lenta”, “Spaghetti” and others.
Most often, the yarn is wound into balls weighing approximately 350 grams, the length of the thread is 100 m, and its width (diameter of the “tube”) is 7-9 mm.
Very beautiful rugs are made from knitted yarn; they are of such high quality, smooth, shiny, dense, hold their shape well, and the pattern in them is clearly visible.
They knit very easily and quickly, as the thread is thick, and they look amazing!
Consumption: approximately 5 balls per mat 1 m in diameter.
Hook number: 12.
Disadvantages : yarn is not cheap, the cost of one ball is around 350 rubles. But homemade yarn still needs to be prepared, and finding a certain number of T-shirts of the same color is probably not so easy, although you can knit a multi-colored rug.
Yarn from plastic bags
Surprisingly, rugs can even be knitted from plastic bags! Our inventors learned how to make ribbon-type yarn from them.
At one time, such knitting became incredibly popular.
Garbage bags are better suited for rugs; they come in different colors, so you can choose the one that suits you. Needlewomen advise taking bags that are not very thick to make knitting more convenient.
Polyethylene rugs are moisture-resistant and durable. This is an ideal option for the bathroom, they don’t slip even on a wet floor, and when leaving the bathroom, you don’t have to be afraid of slipping on them, water doesn’t accumulate under them, and they dry quickly enough.
Consumption of packages: unknown, I haven’t found such information anywhere, probably no one counts the number of packages. But buy them with a reserve, if you suddenly don’t have enough, it’s not a fact that you will find the same color after a while.
Disadvantages : according to reviews, the rugs do not always turn out even, you need to make precise increments in the circles (if the rug is round) so that it does not tighten or, conversely, does not go into waves. Such a finished rug cannot be straightened or ironed.
Also, rugs made from bags are not suitable for rooms in an apartment; they are only suitable for a bathroom, hallway or balcony, that’s my opinion.
Acrylic, wool
You can also knit rugs from regular knitting yarn: wool, half-wool, acrylic.
For this purpose, a thick thread, known to us as Karachaevskaya, is best suited. This is on sale in all stores everywhere and costs 25 rubles per skein of 40 grams, and is also sold in skeins.
The composition is acrylic + wool blend and is very reminiscent of country yarn. It has a rough texture, which is ideal for carpets.
I think this is the best yarn for these types of projects. The rugs are soft and perfectly convey the texture of such a handmade rustic rug. They are easy to wash, do not stretch out, do not shrink after washing, keep their shape perfectly, which is very important - they do not fade at all, so you can use different colors in one product. And the low cost of yarn is a significant plus.
I recommend knitting rugs in two or three folds. In skeins, yarn comes in two or three twisted threads. If it has two twists, then knit it in three folds; if it has three twists, then knit it in two folds. And for the durability of the product, you can include a jute thread in the edge, this will add rigidity, the edge will be smooth and beautiful.

How much knitting yarn will be used for a rug?
A very important question regarding how much yarn a rug made from amazing yarn will require. Even knitting masters have repeatedly turned to the Internet for tips on consumption.
Is there a formula for calculating the amount of thread? In fact, there are special calculators for calculating yarn.
In master classes with step-by-step creation of round rugs, a meter in diameter takes:
5 skeins of ribbon yarn, the length of one skein is 100 meters, the weight of one skein is 350 g.
But you don’t need to think that for every meter in diameter, the same amount of thread will be needed. Since as each ring increases, the consumption will increase.
It is easier to calculate consumption for a rectangular product.
Important! Just below you can see tips on how to calculate the thread consumption for a circle using a formula using geometric shapes (this is a unique formula).
So, the sides of a square or rectangle are known. In order to find out exactly how much yarn you will need, you need to make a sample.
How to make a sample:
- knit a small square;
- measure how many elements are in a 10 cm row;
- measure how many rows are in 10 cm.
You get two numbers and this is the knitting density of the pattern. It will later be useful for a special mathematical formula. Where x will be an unknown variable that equals an unknown set of loops to work with.
A proportion is drawn up and an equation with an unknown variable is solved:
x=(a*b)/c
- a - the number of loops in 10 cm;
- h - 10 cm;
- s-cm set.
For this square, you will need to measure the length of the thread, and count on the sides how many such squares will be in the rug.
The big secret is how you can use this formula and geometry to calculate the amount of yarn for a round rug.
To do this, determine the diameter of the circle as the length of the sides. Calculate the required density and number of yarns for a large square. The result is that the circle is inside the square. If you draw it, it will immediately become clear that the filled area of the circle is equal to exactly 1/2 of the entire large square. Therefore, you will only need to divide the number of yarns by 2. That’s the whole secret.
A small secret for the oval. For it, you need to calculate the number of yarns for a rectangle with the sides of the oval sections (that is, its longest length and smallest width). Then also divide the number of yarns by 2.
Important! You shouldn’t take yarn back to back; you should always have a supply of fiber in reserve so that if there is a shortage, you won’t have to drive all over the city looking for the right color.
What materials are suitable for knitting rugs
Rugs, mats and mats can come in a variety of shapes and configurations, but this article will focus on how to crochet a round rug for beginners. This activity is not difficult, although it requires certain investments: time, attention and materials.
What is suitable for making such a product:
- Wide ribbon yarn.
- Thick and coarse thread.
- Jute twine and household ropes (small diameter).
- DIY strips of fabric.
Knitting secrets
There are many secrets of knitting, and each experienced knitter accumulates his own personal advice. But the best advice would be to try it yourself before making the right decision. Maybe you can make the reduction of loops more correct and unnoticeable. How the master did it when knitting a round rug. There is a pattern for making a round rug using a circle pattern.
In fact, it is not immediately clear that when performing this pattern, seams are formed. They are not always necessary; in some cases, craftsmen strive to make the additions less noticeable. Here's a secret for such a case. It is necessary to make shifts and additions in each row in the same quantity, but in different places; in this case, it will only be important to observe the interval when performing the product.
You can make beautiful rugs, and find a reliable way to buy the right yarn for your new masterpiece. You will have to read a lot of literature, but you can just try to do it once, so as not to guess at work. We wish successful work to all beginning craftsmen and talented knitters with extensive experience.
Additional product design
Depending on the purpose of the product, as well as the selected model, additional interventions may be required. Carpet decor is rarely used. This is inconvenient from a practical point of view. Most often, children's models have to be decorated. These can be various appliqués, which are often made from yarn or purchased ready-made.
It is popular to complement traditional products with an anti-slip base. To do this, use ready-made silicone bases or apply a special composition to the back side of the finished carpet.
A knitted rug will be an excellent addition to the interior. You can make it with your own hands exactly as needed in a particular case. If you have difficulties creating your masterpiece, you can always watch a video of knitting rugs. Everything will immediately become clearer and simpler.
Round rug made of knitted yarn “Ribbon”
Hello everyone) I knitted a rug and I don’t have the strength to tell and show everyone.
This popular rug is very easy to knit, so even if you're just learning to knit, don't hesitate to get started. Thanks to the thick knitted yarn, it is knitted very quickly and the result will not take long to arrive. To knit a rug with a diameter of 97 cm, it took 5 skeins of “Lenta” yarn (gray melange shade, 100% cotton, 100 m per skein, weight 350-370 g), a hook No. 12 and a couple of evenings of free time. The circle can be knitted in several ways

What to knit a carpet from? Yarn comparison
Do you want to knit a carpet yourself, but don’t know which yarn to choose? Then this article will help you decide.
To carry out the analysis, I used 8 types of yarn.
The one that is most often recommended by manufacturers, that is, knitted yarn and cords. And those types that I have been using for knitting carpets for many years, but which were not originally intended for this.
I’ll also tell you about my notes on each type of yarn tested.
We determine the experimental constant:
For all samples, 7 rows were knitted in a circle with regular single crochets and 6 increases in each row.
The hook number was selected for each type of yarn, based on the required maximum density of the carpet. That is, the fewer holes, the better!
1. Maccheroni.
Manufacturer YarnArt Türkiye. Yarn composition: 90% reconstituted cotton, 10% polyester Skein weight: 500-700 g Thread length: 100-150 m.
We knit in one thread. To calculate, we take the weight of a skein of 600g, length 100m, since the skeins come in different weights.
Notes: Knitting is stiff and dense. Visible holes remain, especially when knitting increases. The carpet turns out to be quite thick.
The resulting sample: diameter 22.5 cm, thickness 16 mm.
2. Cordy
Manufacturer Cordy. Yarn composition: Cotton - 70%, polyester - 30% Cotton cord diameter 5 mm. Skein weight: about 1000 g Thread length: 200 m
We knit in one thread. Hook No. 10.
Notes: Knitting is stiff and dense. Visible holes remain, especially when knitting increases. The carpet turns out to be quite thick. Massage effect.
The resulting sample: diameter 20 cm, thickness 15 mm.
3. New from YarnArt Cord Yarn
Manufacturer YarnArt Türkiye. Yarn composition: 40% cotton, 60% polyester Skein weight: 250 g Thread length: 73 m
We knit in one thread. Hook No. 8.
Notes: due to the higher percentage of polyester, the thread is softer and more pleasant than previous tests. There are holes in the knitting, but they are less noticeable, and the filling capacity is greater.
The resulting sample: diameter 17.5 cm, thickness 12 mm.
4. Biskvit yarn.
Manufacturer Russia. Yarn composition: 100% cotton Skein weight: 330 +- 30 g Thread length: 100 +- 10 m
We knit in one thread. To calculate, we take the weight of a skein of 300g, length 100m. Hook No. 8.
Notes: yarn similar to Maccheroni, but 2 times thinner and lighter. Knits just as hard, there are holes.
The resulting sample: diameter 16.5 cm, thickness 11 mm.
5. Polyester knitting cord with 6 mm round filler 1s-50/35.
Sold in skeins containing 200 m of cord. The approximate weight of one skein is 622.5 g. The supplier does not state the weight, but after weighing 4 skeins, she determined this average figure.
We knit in one thread. To calculate, we take the weight of the skein to be 622.5g and the length to be 200m. Hook No. 8.
Notes: Rigid knitting. The carpet has a massage effect. Holes are also present.
The resulting sample: diameter 16.5 cm, thickness 10 mm.
6. Ribbon yarn.
Manufacturer YarnArt Türkiye. Yarn composition: Cotton - 60%, polyester - 40% Skein weight: 250 g Thread length: 125 m
We knit in one thread. Hook No. 7.
Notes: flat cord. Knitting is much softer, but for a carpet, in my opinion, one thread is not enough. There are holes.
The resulting sample: diameter 12 cm, thickness 8 mm.
Almost all of the samples listed above contain cotton. And cotton, as we know, is not a soft material at all. Therefore, we will consider other yarn options. In particular, yarns containing wool and acrylic.
In fact, more than 6 years ago I started knitting carpets using acrylic. Then from wool mixture, and only now am I testing various knitted options and cords. That is, I’m going from the opposite
