Dream catcher - what is it? Instructions on how to make it yourself + 140 photos of ideas from craftswomen!

Origin of the amulet

Before making a dream catcher with your own hands, step-by-step instructions that will easily help you cope with this task, you need to familiarize yourself with the history and purpose of this item. This amulet was invented by the Indians living in the northern parts of America, who believed that evil spirits caused nightmares.

The design of the amulet is designed in such a way that terrible dreams get stuck in the tangle of threads, and good dreams pass through the hole in the middle of the amulet.

According to legend, this amulet was given to the Indian tribe by a good spirit in the form of a spider, which is why the dream catcher has such a structure, similar to a spider’s web. The amulet was made from various materials - animal horns, tree branches, beads, feathers, and so on.

Each of these materials carried a special meaning, but today this amulet has become an ordinary piece of furniture that can be made from any available materials. Try making a dream catcher with your own hands, it's an incredibly exciting activity.

Assembled cardboard dream catcher

To make a large dream catcher from segments with your own hands, cut them out of ordinary thick cardboard - this way they will definitely be the same. For strength, glue 2-3 pieces together so that the result is one strong large ring, one medium and six small ones.

To wind the base, take a larger thread and wind it tightly - this will further strengthen the cardboard frame. And for the web it is better to take a thinner thread, especially in small rings, otherwise they will be too massive and rough. Try not to overtighten anything so that the rings do not become deformed.

To make decorative tassels, wind the thread around your palm until you get the desired thickness. Tie it in one place, cut it at the opposite side and trim the edges. Form the top of the tassel, put on a large bead and hide all the ends of the threads in it. All that remains is to sew and tie all the parts together, as in the photographs.

How to make a talisman against bad dreams?

To make a traditional amulet, you need to use only materials created by nature. But in our age, not every city dweller has something similar, so materials for the catcher can be bought at a decor or craft store

Ideally, it is best to use willow branches for the base, but if you cannot find them, then you can replace them with the most ordinary embroidery hoop.

We are preparing the following materials:

  • Catcher base, willow branch or hoop
  • Floss of different colors can be taken in the same color scheme, depending on the style of the amulet
  • You can use different beads according to your taste
  • An important part of the amulet is feathers, they are not difficult to get, ideally these should be the feathers of an owl or other birds of prey
  • Scissors, needle and glue
  • Satin ribbons to weave around the base

Do-it-yourself dream catcher weaving pattern is a simple instruction; the catcher should have thirty-six rays extending from the center and intersecting the spiral thread.

How to make a dream catcher

The willow twig needs to be wrapped with thread, ribbon, but so that the tip remains at least 15 cm. The other end of the thread is tied on the willow twig, thereby forming a circle. From this moment the weaving of the web begins. To make this easier, you need to figuratively divide the circle into parts, the distance between which is 4 cm.

Next, you need to tie a half-knot with thread and wrap it around the base, threading it through a loop. Thus, we complete the entire first row to the end.

The next rows are made using the same method, but the thread is tied not to the base, but to the thread of the first and subsequent rows. If you need to weave beads or stones, then thread the beads periodically.

Do it at your discretion, there are no clear rules. When the web is woven to the middle, secure it with glue.

The Catcher's middle can be open or closed. Both options will drive away bad dreams.

Reason: preparation

The willow branches need to be bent into a circle, one end of the branch should braid the other end. After this, the base must dry, this may take several days. When the base dries, you can decorate it with ribbons, or leave it in its natural form.

If you can't find branches, you can use a hoop, or find a round wooden frame at a craft store. If you use a cardboard base, wrap it tightly with floss.

How to make dreamcatcher earrings with your own hands: step-by-step master class

Tassels, light pastel colors – are you feeling summer? If you like to wear big earrings in the summer, the bigger the better, then these earrings have an important advantage: they are lightweight. We hope you fall in love with the geometric basics that create them. Using these, you can make large, unique earrings, and it's not as difficult as it may seem. Today you will learn how to make earrings in the form of a Dreamcatcher amulet. You will also learn how to make tassels and attach them to the hoop.

Prepare the accessories and materials necessary to create the “Dream Catcher” earrings:

  • Metal rings - 2 pieces
  • Dental floss - we chose this because it has a nice shine and makes brushes nice and smooth. The downside to dental floss is that it is smooth and you may need more patience and some quick-drying glue to work with it.
  • Earrings for earrings – 2 pieces
  • Sharp scissors
  • A piece of cardboard 10 cm long
  • Long nose pliers
  • optional crochet hook.

Step-by-step instruction

STEP 1

Prepare 1m of dental floss, tie it tightly to the hoop, leaving a tail of about 5cm. If you are using the same lovely floss as we do, we recommend applying a little quick-drying glue to the knot. But only a small amount. Brush glue would be the best option for this craft.

STEP 2

  • Now you need to think about what pattern your web will be woven into. In ours, the nodes are located in the first row at a distance of about 1.5 cm from each other. But your network can be denser if you want. You can measure the gaps with a ruler and mark them on the base ring with a pencil. But we believe that handmade jewelry does not need to be measured accurately. This is their special charm.
  • Tie a knotted loop on the hoop. Place the thread on top of the ring, then move it around the wire to create a hole. This stage is clearly visible in the photo.

STEP 3

Pull the thread through the hole you just made. The second knot will be easier to hold. It will not move or unravel.

STEP 4

Continue making loops around the hoop in the same manner.

STEP 5

We got 7 knots.

STEP 6

On the second and subsequent rows of web weaving, pass the thread around the thread in the center of each stitch from the previous rows. Continue moving towards the center of the hoop. You can use a crochet hook for ease of weaving. This will make the job much easier.

STEP 7

When you have weaved the web to the center of the hoop, tie the last knot and secure it with a drop of glue to secure it.

STEP 8

Making tassels from threads. Wrap the threads around a piece of cardboard 10 times. If you choose a thinner thread, wrap it about 20 times - the more, the more fluffy your tassels will be.

STEP 9

Carefully remove the wound threads from the cardboard, without moving their position while winding. Prepare a new piece of thread about 10 cm in length.

STEP 10

Very carefully pass the winding through the base ring (as shown in the photo).

STEP 11

Hold the bun with your fingers.

STEP 12

Thread a short piece of thread into the needle and carefully wrap it around the bunch of threads of the tassel near the ring 4 times. Tie a knot in the wrapped bun at the back of the earring. If you are using smooth thread, we recommend using a little glue. Don't cut the ends of the thread yet.

STEP 13

Repeat the above steps until you have made 6 tassels. We attached 3 tassels to the holes of each of the Dreamcatcher earrings.

STEP 14

Using sharp scissors, trim the edges of the tassels evenly and neatly. Now you have beautiful tassels.

STEP 15

You can trim them if you want. I like tassels that are a little jagged because they look nice when worn. But it's all up to you.

STEP 16

Attach the earrings. Using pliers, open the earring hole and attach it to the base ring.

STEP 17

Now your dream catcher earrings are ready. If you used a smaller diameter hoop, you can add just the tassels to it. We also recommend using a hexagonal base - it looks amazing just with tassels.

Using the same technique you can make fabulous pendants, pendants or key rings. Tassels have been and remain in fashion for a long time, so we hope that we have inspired you with many of our designs.

Weaving a web

Do-it-yourself dream catchers step-by-step instructions involve weaving, which is considered a very important element, because it is this web that holds bad dreams that dissolve with the first rays of dawn.

You need to immediately mark the place where the threads are attached, then the thread is tied to the base and taken out through the ring on the left side. This needs to be done over the entire base, the first row of weaving will be ready. Next, the second row is woven, but this time the threads are attached to the threads of the first row.

When you reach the central part, the thread is simply tied in a strong knot. You can string beads onto the weaving; to do this, you need to put them directly on the threads, as you weave.

Dream catcher "Yin-Yang"

The main difficulty of such a dream catcher is to make a figured partition in the middle. For it you will need a thick wire, which you need to carefully bend and wrap at the ends to the base circle. To work, take black and white threads and wind each on its half of the ring, and at the same time on the central jumper.

Start winding the web from the narrow “tail” of each segment. The main part of this dream catcher is knitted in a standard way - in the round, row by row, and when the rows of the tail come closer together, instead of the next turn, pull them together. It is better to work with relatively thin threads and a needle so that the narrow part is neat and the mesh is even.

Dreamcatcher: decoration

You need to approach the decoration of the amulet responsibly. If you are making a dream catcher with your own hands for children, then you can make the amulet colorful and bright using colored beads and floss threads.

On the sides and bottom of the catcher you need to hang several strong threads, which are decorated with beads strung on them, and do not forget to use feathers. The beads look very harmonious and go well with feathers and a natural wooden base.

Dream catcher with star

If classic dream catchers seem too strict for you, then experiment with forms and content. For example, the star inside looks very unusual and at the same time eclectic. And it’s probably the easiest thing to do – you can even work with a child.

Figure out how many rays your star will have and divide the round base into segments. In this case, they may not be perfectly even - slight negligence gives the decoration a special charm. Wrap large, sweeping rays in one or more threads. Using a needle and another small piece of lace, form the middle, pulling it with loops. Instead of beads, you can decorate your dream catcher with small balls of wool, felted toys or felt figures.

Where is the dream catcher hung?

The ideal condition for the amulet is when air currents pass through it, this will allow it to catch more bad dreams and trap them in its magical web. Of course, the dream catcher should be as close as possible to the place of sleep, which is why it is most often placed above the sleeping area.

The amulet must be exposed to sunlight; it is the sun that destroys and drives away bad dreams that get stuck in the web and remain there until the morning.

It is best not to hang the dream catcher on the wall, but a little further away from the wall so that there is air around it. You can make a variety of dream catchers with your own hands, as it is not at all difficult, but it requires a creative approach.

An amulet made with your own hands will have much more power, because your energy will be invested in it. Such a talisman can be hung on a crib; it will help the baby sleep soundly and see only good and kind dreams.

Weaving a little dream catcher

Dream catcher is an Indian amulet that filters dreams. Bad dreams get entangled in its web and dissolve with the first rays of the sun, and good dreams descend along the feathers to the sleeping person, and he dreams of bright, colorful, memorable dreams!

Since ancient times, there were five rules for creating a talisman:

1. Amulets cannot be made for yourself.

2. No one can force someone to make a talisman for themselves or beg them to do it. Amulets are made only of good will and from a pure soul.

3. The most powerful amulets are those that are made for you by your blood relatives: father, mother, brother, children.

4. You need to be very careful when choosing materials for amulets, because often a material (stone, wood) that is good for you is completely unsuitable for the person for whom you are creating this amulet.

5. In the process of creating a talisman, you must constantly think about the person for whom you are making it, keep his image before your mental gaze, feel his energy, mood, character, needs.

Having taken into account all five rules, we begin to create a Dream Catcher.

For this we will need: a curtain ring, iris threads, a bead, feathers, a needle, scissors, a piece of leather, a bamboo shuttle for weaving.

We wind about 4-5 meters of thread onto the shuttle, and tie the remaining tip to the ring.

We wrap a thread around the ring. At the same time, make sure that the thread is well stretched and the turns fit snugly against each other. When the ring is completely wrapped, we cut the thread and tie the remaining tails two or three times.

Then we begin to weave a web. To do this, cut the thread about 2 meters, fold it in half and make a loop on the ring, thread the opposite tail into a needle and begin to weave a web, as shown in the following photos. Before finishing the web, we put a bead on a thread - this will symbolize the spider in the web. And at the end we tie the thread into a knot.

We tie a pendant on which our Dream Catcher will hang and give the sleeper wonderful dreams!

The next important stage in creating a Dream Catcher is tying feathers to it - a symbol of air! To do this, we take one or several feathers, fold them beautifully to each other, wrap them tightly with thread and tie them tightly (the thread is taken in such a way that after the winding there are two tails of 10 centimeters each - for tying to the ring). Cut a small strip from a piece of leather (the width and length of the strip is at your discretion). Then we wrap this strip tightly around the tails of the feathers and wrap it with thread - evenly, neatly, tightly, and then tie it.

The final stage is to tie the feather to the ring.

Hooray! Our little Dream Catcher is ready!

If you wish, you can use other materials, feathers and decorations when creating a Dream Catcher!

Materials for a dream catcher

It is believed that artificial materials convey the energy of the owner worse than natural ones.

That is why it is highly recommended to use only natural stones, feathers, base and beads for this amulet. But if the dream catcher is created solely for decorative purposes, then you can fully show your imagination and make it from any elements.

How to make a dream catcher with your own hands as an effective protector against nightmares? By following the instructions, you can make a magnificent amulet that will contain a piece of your soul.

It is believed that the dream catcher has the unique ability to protect not only from bad dreams, but also from demons, which often attack the sleeping person. Sunlight cleanses the amulet of negative energy every morning as soon as dawn begins.

This amulet will fit perfectly into an interior in ethno and new age styles; it is also an integral attribute of hippie culture. Today, a dream catcher can be found in almost every second home, as it is not only a useful invention, but also a very stylish one.

Dream catcher with ring

The talisman with its inner ring will look original.

To make it, add another smaller willow branch or ring to the set.

First, make a blank as for a regular talisman and wrap it with thread. The small ring is also wrapped with thread.

You can place the small ring strictly in the center or move it to the side, it doesn’t really matter. It all depends on your desire.

For ease of weaving, the rings are placed on the table and thread is wrapped around both rings, leaving a distance between the loops. Jewelry and feathers of birds are attached to a ring of larger diameter.

You can also make a dream catcher with several rings. In this case, make two rings of a larger and smaller diameter, weave a web in each and secure the ring with the smaller diameter under the larger one.
