First, the brick wall is cleaned of wallpaper and plaster. Then, using a tape measure and a pencil, markings are made. After this, a reinforcing jumper is installed on top. The disadvantages of the method include high energy consumption, the need for cooling with water and the high cost of consumables (coated wheels).

Waterjet method

The waterjet method (cold cutting) is not far behind in popularity. Openings in concrete are made by applying a jet of water mixed with sand (abrasive) with a diameter of up to 0.4 mm. Water under pressure enters the tank, where it mixes with sand, then exits through a nozzle at a speed of up to 1000 m/s and hits the material being cut. To extinguish the residual force of the jet, a special water trap is used. With low pressure it is possible to remove concrete without disturbing the reinforcement, and high pressure allows you to make a cut through.

This method has advantages:

  • accuracy and precision of cutting;
  • compliance with environmental standards, absence of gases and harmful fumes;
  • there is no thermal or mechanical effect on the slot;
  • punching does not cause much noise or vibration;
  • cutting can be done at any angle;
  • It is easy to give the doorway an unusual shape.

The disadvantages of waterjet cutting include the high price of the abrasive and the large size of the installation, which does not allow its use in residential buildings.

Oxygen lance drilling

Openings in concrete are made using oxygen-lance drilling - cutting, which uses an oxygen lance (a thick-walled metal pipe saturated with oxygen). The spear is heated to 1360-1400°C, this is done with the help of foreign objects (welding, burner). When the spear lights up, the heating source is removed. The end of the pipe burns, heating up to a temperature of 2000°C. To increase the thermal force, a steel rod is placed in the spear. During the operation, the tube comes into contact with the concrete, this will help overcome the resistance of dense slag. This type is sometimes dangerous for workers; heated slag particles can fly several meters away.

Diamond cutting

This cutting method is one of the most popular and ergonomic methods for cutting a hole in a wall. This method has gained such popularity due to its versatility and environmental friendliness. Using diamond cutting, you can make new door and window openings, enlarge old openings, cut off unnecessary parts of the structure while leaving an even cut line.

An important point is that thanks to this method there is a minimum of inconvenience in terms of noise and dirt.

Tool

For work we will need:

  • plumbing tools (tape measure, electric drill, level, marker);
  • wall saws - they are most often used on construction sites, as they require a large amount of water and a 380V electrical connection. In addition, they are very bulky in order to make openings in living quarters, in the concrete wall of an ordinary room. But it should be noted that wall sawing machines are indispensable when dismantling reinforced concrete structures;
  • a hand cutter is the most common tool; to operate, it requires a connection to water (consumption 50-100 l) and electricity (220V). Can be used both on construction sites and in residential premises. It is mainly used in residential buildings.

Work process

When starting work, you need to mark the doorway using a level tape measure and a marker; the measurement should be done as accurately as possible, since the degree of destruction of the wall is minimal. Openings for a door or window are cut in a concrete wall in several stages: first it is cut on one side of the wall, then on the other side, then everything is divided into separate sections. After this, the pieces of cut concrete are pulled out of the wall and removed from the room.

This method is considered environmentally friendly due to the fact that during operation, the cutting discs are washed with water, so dust does not disperse throughout the room, and is removed immediately after work with a conventional industrial vacuum cleaner.

It is necessary to wash diamond discs with water not only to get rid of construction dust, but also for cooling, since they constantly heat up during operation. The cut surface after working with diamond discs remains smooth and does not require significant additional plastering.

Robot tools

Drilling is used to make technological holes, sockets, and grooves. An opening in a concrete wall, or its expansion, is most often made using cutting diamond elements fixed in different types of tools. If the concrete is of small thickness, cutting can be done with an angle grinder (“grinder”) and 105-125 mm wheels.

Spraying water while working will help reduce the amount of dust and preserve the disc. If contact with water is not safe, you will have to cut “dry”. But to cool the segments, after a certain time you will have to remove the disk from the cutting zone and let the machine run “idle” (from 10 to 50 seconds).

You can cut an opening more than 10 cm deep using professional circular saws (hydraulic, electric cutters); they will quickly cut through concrete to a depth of 15-16 cm on one side. Discs of 350-400 mm are used. When cutting concrete, workers must wear respirators; concrete dust can enter the lungs and cause serious illness. You should also wear gloves and goggles.

Effect of wall thickness

Wall thickness is the main indicator that helps determine the cutting method. If the depth of the slot is no more than 10 cm, you can use a grinder. If the concrete thickness is 8-10 cm, you need to work with a high-power machine. If the wall is 15-16 cm, you need to use a circular saw (discs with a diameter of 350-400 mm). You can use a grinder, but you will have to work in several stages and there is a risk of the tool overheating.

For concrete with a thickness of 30 cm or more, you need to use a special wall cutting tool, it can be of manual or machine type. Concrete up to 60 cm thick is cut with a tool such as a chain saw or ring cutter. Concrete over 60 cm thick is cut using machines using a 100 cm disc, or rope cutting devices.

How to make an opening?

Before you start cutting the doorway (expanding it), you need to mark the wall: draw lines with a pencil or chalk. To make an even slot, you can attach slats along the markings along which the grinder will move. The rail is secured with plastic anchors. Before starting work, temporary support structures must be installed.

By moving the grinder along the slats (guides), a cut of up to 1 cm is made along the entire perimeter of the future opening. The pre-slot helps determine the correct disc choice. Therefore, you need to carefully inspect the disc and assess the degree of wear. If there is no damage, you need to continue working, gradually deepening the cut (up to 15 mm each).

If the concrete is thicker than 100 mm, use a special concrete saw. When cutting reinforcement, the cutting speed must be reduced. In general, the principle of operation is the same as with a grinder; each cut is made to a depth of up to 3 cm.

Reinforcing the opening

After cutting the opening or expanding it, it is necessary to strengthen the walls with additional metal structures. There are the following types of strengthening of openings:

  1. Single-row - strengthening is performed using a channel. A U-shaped frame is made around the opening. In such structures, different types of channels and methods of fastening to the wall can be used. Places where the channel does not adjoin the wall are filled with mortar.
  2. Corner - edging is done with corners on both sides of the wall, the corners are fastened together with pins and metal plates. Such designs are used most often.
  3. Combined - channel and corners are used for strengthening.

Coordination of openings in load-bearing walls
