Classification of chairs by purpose
Interior soft chairs
The main purpose of an interior soft chair is to help create a comfortable relaxation area. It is convenient to sit in it with your favorite book, handicrafts, watch TV, or just allow yourself to do nothing.
In particular, it is worth including the following points:
- The soft filling makes the fit comfortable, molding to the shape of your body;
- The quality of the upholstery determines how pleasant the furniture will be on the skin. At the same time, this is a great way to enliven a design, giving it solidity or brightness;
- A large number of varieties from classics to extravagant design visions;
- Covering all possible furniture styles;
- Wide selection of shapes and sizes. The back can vary from very short (below the level of the shoulder blades) to extremely high (about 2 meters);
- Availability of models suitable for children.
Chairs for work
Chairs for work can be divided into the following categories:
- For the staff. This is the most budget category. Seats are often made with a low backrest and have a minimum number of settings. At the same time, they do their job quite well. But it’s not easy to sit on this for longer than 5–6 hours—your back starts to hurt;
- For guidance. These are impressive, large variations with a wide seat and comfortable armrests. Their solid appearance immediately sets them apart from the rest of the crowd. They cost a decent amount, but they have many more parameters that can be adjusted to suit you. Suitable for spending up to 8 hours at a time at the computer;
- Anatomical or orthopedic. A very complex back divided into several zones (corset type). The headrest and lumbar bolster are almost always present. In such a chair, due to maximum contact and back support, you can spend up to 10 hours in a row without harm to your health. The stem rod and flexible fastening of the backrest elements allow you to use the free swing mode most effectively. However, you can lock it or fix the backrest in any position that suits you.
Office ones are very easy to recognize by the following signs:
- High or curved back. In the second case, the bend serves as an alternative to the lumbar roll;
- The presence of such elements as a headrest, customizable armrests, pads for the neck or back;
- Maximum level of care for the spine;
- Design designed to reduce harm from prolonged sitting;
- The use of textured, “breathable” fabrics for upholstery;
- Equipped with swing mechanisms that allow you to adjust the angle of the backrest;
- The presence of a gas lift responsible for adjusting the seat height;
- Cross with double movable rollers.

Types of chair designs
Standard models
The most common type of chairs can be called standard. Regardless of their shape, they are easy to recognize by standing on their legs. The supports can be straight or curved (cabriole), but they must be present. Decorative and functional elements that influence comfort can include lateral support (wings), bolster armrests, and accompanying poufs.
These seats are distinguished by soft fillings, comfort and are intended for relaxation or leisure.
Folding chairs beds
The main purpose of transformer chairs is to help equip small rooms with everything necessary. Such chairs can be folded into a bed, a lounger, or equipped with its own table, which can also serve as the head of the bed.
Very easy to use, take up little space. But you shouldn’t abuse sleep on transformers. Still, they are not able to replace a full-fledged bed. But in the event of guests arriving, there is no price for them. They are also great for children's rooms or small living rooms. They can be used in the countryside. The price-quality ratio is very reasonable.
Advertisers
The word advertiser has long become synonymous with comfort and high cost. These are luxurious chairs that, in addition to a large number of settings for all parameters, allow them to be folded completely horizontally with the extension of a special footrest.
There can be several types of mechanisms:
- Mechanical. To activate it, you will have to press quite hard on the back. The most convenient way to do this is to lean your whole body back. The transformation process is quite slow. It is possible to accelerate the release of the footrest manually. You can also remove it by hand. Not the most convenient, but the cheapest option;
- Electrical. Additional equipment with motors and electric drive will help eliminate the need to do anything yourself. Just press the button and wait for the chair to transform. In electric versions the process proceeds much faster. Control can be touch, push-button or remote.
As a nice bonus, the advertiser can be equipped with a minibar with a cooling function; electronic massager or sound system.
Rocking chairs
The classification of chairs will undoubtedly be incomplete without the rocking chairs beloved by many. They can be divided into:
- On skids. This is a classic option. At the base there are 2 narrow skis, slightly curved upward at both edges. They are quite noisy and require frequent push-offs, since the swing amplitude quickly fades. Suitable for hard floors only;
- Viennese armchair. The runners with armrests are connected into a rounded closed loop;
- Pendulum mechanism. Gliders are suitable for installation on carpets or soft floor coverings. The base remains motionless. Only the seat rocks. They are often equipped with an accompanying footrest with the same rocking mechanism;
- Spring. Papasan rocking chairs are standardly made of rattan. They are equipped with a wide ring-shaped base and a hollow twisted leg. A powerful spring is mounted inside it, which is responsible for rocking. A round reclining seat completes the picture.
Hanging
Hanging chairs come in a variety of types:
- Hammock chair;
- Cocoon;
- Egg;
- Ball.
In addition, they all differ not only in appearance, but also in the type of suspension:
- Ceiling;
- Ceiling with additional fastening to walls or floor;
- Beam;
- Rack.
Of all types of suspensions, only the stand allows the chair to be mobile. It is easy to carry. The stand is suitable for outdoor use. The beam suspension allows for dismantling and moving, but this is much more difficult.
What materials are used to create chairs
Frame models of chairs today are made from the following materials:
- various types of wood;
- pressed sawdust boards;
- polished or varnished slabs;
- furniture natural plywood;
- metal;
- plastic.
The covering can be:
- fabric;
- leather;
- velor;
- synthetic;
- suede.
It is extremely rare that frames are made from only one type of material. They are usually a combination of several types. Metal is primarily used for posts, bottom stops, and fasteners.
For frameless models, durable fabric with dirt-repellent properties and polystyrene foam balls or synthetic foam as filler are used.
Armchairs are a mandatory attribute of the design of a recreation area. They fit perfectly into the decor of any room - children's room, living room, bedroom. Therefore, you should definitely purchase a couple of similar items for your apartment.

Types of chair frames
Frame models
The seat frame can be made from the following types of materials:
- Natural wood;
- All types of chipboards or wood boards of small fractions. Polished or varnished boards are also used;
- Furniture natural plywood;
- Metals;
- Plastics.
Very rarely, only one type of material is used to make a frame. In most cases they are a combination of several types. Metals most often form the basis of racks, lower stops, and fasteners. The main metal is used only in garden furniture.
Frameless
The main type of frameless chairs can be safely called bags (pillows). According to the principle of their design, they resemble a large soft mattress. The whole difference will be in the given shape (ball, drop, stump) and filler. The most common filler is foam molded into balls. The smaller it is, the softer it will sit. To increase the comfort of fit, it is often mixed with aero or synthetic down. These fibrous, fluffy fillings are lightweight, lightweight, and quickly crinkle. In general, immediately be prepared for the fact that you will have to regularly add filler. It is also hygroscopic. Therefore, you should avoid damp places or rooms with high humidity. You can dry the filler, but this is not a pleasant task.
The design of the beanbag chair is very simple:
- Zippered case for filling with balls (internal);
- Filler;
- The cover, which is the “face” of the chair (external). Also available with zipper closure.
It is better if the outer cover is made of materials that repel water and dirt. The need for frequent washing significantly poisons the blood. Another disadvantage is that the bags are afraid of sharp objects and pets with sharp claws. Fabrics with anti-claw function will not be superfluous. It is better to have several external cases included. This way you won’t leave the filler to the mercy of fate while washing. Once spilled, it is very difficult to collect.
Another type of frameless furniture can be called inflatable chairs. Their distinctive features include:
- The main manufacturing material is polyvinyl chloride (vinyl). It is quite beautiful, durable, and stretch-resistant. But, it is afraid of low temperatures and mechanical damage. Inflatable furniture should be kept warm. For outdoor use, it is better to purchase variations with a reinforced bottom;
- Rich color palette. Vinyl is easily painted, does not fade, and can be of any degree of transparency. Excellent coverage with flock coating (nylon pile);
- Car pumps cannot be used for inflation. It will end up tearing at the seams. Buy a special one if the chair is not equipped with a built-in pump;
- Abundance of forms. Inflatable chairs completely imitate frame chairs with armrests, headrests and other elements;
- Inflatable transformers can be used for sleeping. Of course, they will not replace the bed, but for a while they are very comfortable.
Device and selection rules
Frame
The furniture frame is an important part of it; the durability of the chair largely depends on the strength of this element. Let's look at the most common materials.
- Beam made of solid wood. The most common option is coniferous timber. The pine forest is considered the best. Expensive models are made from birch, beech, oak and other types of wood.
- MDF. This type of wood board partly repeats the basic characteristics of solid wood, only less durable. The main advantage is considered to be low cost.
- Furniture plywood. It is used for partitions, sidewalls and other structural elements. Often made from birch veneer.
- Metal. It can be used both for the main elements of the frame and for strengthening individual parts. For example, metal corners are often used to reinforce the joints of wooden parts. The most commonly used are stainless steel or aluminum.
- Chipboard. Another fairly common type of wood-based panels. It is characterized by poor resistance to loads, as well as poor response to high humidity. Used only in the cheapest models of chairs.
Filling and upholstery materials
An easy chair must have a filling. The following types of materials are often used as filling.
- Vulcanized silicone. A universal solution for many types of chairs, it has good recovery after loading.
- Molded polyurethane foam. Good material, low cost and long service life.
- Foam rubber. One of the cheapest fillers. It wrinkles quickly.
- Holofiber. One of the most modern materials. Due to its characteristics, it can also be used for children's furniture.
- Felt. Natural material, can be made from wool or cotton.
- Horsehair. A variety specially treated with silicone is used.
- Sintepon. It is not used in its pure form; it is usually used as an intermediate layer between the filler and the upholstery.
Separately, it is worth considering upholstery materials.
- Flock. It is better to use a variety with pile created by electrostatic spraying.
- Scotchgard and jacquard. They are distinguished by good appearance and resistance to mechanical damage.
- Velvet and velor. Natural fabrics with a fleecy surface.
- Microvelvet. It is distinguished by the original texture of the “ribbed” pattern.
- Some expensive chairs are upholstered in cashmere-based fabrics.
- Microfiber.
- Chenille. It is distinguished by the presence of large, fluffy threads.
- Tapestry. A fairly simple fabric, but at the same time reliable, it can have a very original pattern.
- Cotton or linen matting. Cleans well.
- Eco leather. There are several varieties of this material, all of which perfectly replace natural leather. Not afraid of pollution.
- Genuine Leather. Fine material is used. It is characterized by high cost.
Armrests
Armrests can be stationary or folding. The folding mechanism may differ depending on which model of chair is used. There are the following types of armrests:
- hard;
- semi-rigid;
- soft.
Legs
The most common material for making legs is wood. This solution provides sufficient reliability. Metal legs are found only in high-tech furniture and other similar styles. Some cheap models have MDF or chipboard legs.
The shape of the legs depends on the style of the furniture. The classic option is regular legs, straight or curved. Sometimes there are chairs that rest on runners. Office options have one leg, which is complemented by a base with rollers. Rocking chairs and other similar models of chairs do not have legs at all.

How to choose the right chair for your room
Using the examples below, you can guide your own choice of chair. An important rule is that the model should not violate the overall style and make it difficult to move around the room.
For the living room
This is a traditional seating area. A few pieces around a sofa or coffee table will perfectly complement the interior and become an excellent island for entertaining guests or evening gatherings with the family.
For the bedroom
The only chair by the window is an excellent corner for relaxing, reading a book, even working or relaxing before bed.
For children's
Bright and soft bean bags for babies and primary schoolchildren are convenient for games, relaxation and reading.
For kitchen
An armchair is appropriate in the kitchen interior if its area allows for an additional piece of furniture.
To the office
For a desk, you need a business chair or recliner to relax after a busy day at work. If the size and style of the office allows, it is possible to put cozy soft chairs in it.
Purpose of the chair
First of all, before you go shopping in a store or look through the catalog offered by an online store, you need to decide where you intend to put this piece of furniture. The design, construction, and material of the chair will largely depend on what room you are purchasing it for. So, when buying a chair you need to consider:
- The area where the chair will be used is the room in which it will stand;
- The purpose of the chair is for work or rest;
- Design features - whether the chair should serve as a bed or will be intended only for sitting.
When you clearly understand where and for what purpose you want to place the chair, you can consider that the problem of choice is 50% solved.
