Happy owners of one-room apartments or studios, after purchasing them, first of all decide how to optimally use the space in order to place everything rationally and conveniently. Of course, one of the main interior items is the bed. On the one hand, it should be spacious, and on the other hand, it should be placed as compactly as possible. How can these conflicting desires be reconciled?
On the one hand, the bed should be spacious, and on the other hand, it should be placed as compactly as possible.
The dimensions of the folding bed depend on the sleeping place, the standard dimensions of which are 0.9 -1.6 m * 2 m.
Owners of two- and three-room apartments are also thinking about how to accommodate visiting relatives and friends. You need a comfortable sleeping place, but if you put a bed, most of the time it will just get in the way. What if two children live in the nursery at the same time? In this case, it is not possible to place two beds and provide sufficient space for games. Which exit? In all these cases, the best option would be a bed that retracts into the wall.
Owners of two- and three-room apartments are also thinking about how to accommodate visiting relatives and friends.
Strengths of the foldable design
- Significant savings in room space. The freed space (2.5 - 3 square meters) is available for eating, working, studying, children's games, meetings and conversations with guests.
- Creates comfort in the room. A large bed takes up a large area and in a small room there is an impression of overload and clutter.
- There is no need to make and unfold the bed, remove pillows and blankets every day.
- Makes wet cleaning in the room easier.
In all these cases, the best option would be a bed that retracts into the wall.
In a nursery, it is better to use a horizontal lift mechanism.
Weaknesses of such structures
- The daily need to raise and lower the structure.
- Fear of bed falling.
- High price.
Significant savings in room space.
Based on the fact that fear passes over time, and such a piece of furniture is not bought for one day, a bed in the wall is the most optimal solution to this housing problem.
Creates comfort in the room.
The beds vary in the number of beds: single, one and a half and double.
Materials
As a rule, modern furniture factories try to make furniture from high-quality materials.
Mechanisms are made from high-quality metal alloys such as steel or aluminum, thanks to which the wardrobe can be transformed into a bed and back. Thus, this ensures a long service life for the furniture. As for the frame of the fittings, it can be made of metal or solid high-quality wood. The rest of the bed parts can be made from chipboard, MDF or wood:
- If the wardrobe-bed is made of real, unpressed wood, then such furniture will delight you with its service life, since this material is one of the most durable and high-quality. The price, of course, will be appropriate, but beauty and reliability are ensured for a long period of use. The main thing is that all wooden surfaces are treated with a special impregnation against mold and insects.
- A more economical option is a wardrobe bed made of MDF. This is also a high-quality and reliable material with positive performance characteristics, and it is also environmentally friendly. Often the frame itself is made of metal, and the facade and decorative elements are made of MDF, so that the model costs less and has less weight for ease of transportation.
Various materials are also used to upholster or upholster the bed itself, it all depends on the model. If, for example, this is a 3 in 1 model, when there is a small sofa, then it can be covered with jacquard, chenille, real leather or its substitute (artificial or eco-leather). The banner can be ordinary or decorative, for example, a carriage tie.
Very often, this furniture can be complemented with decorative elements, for example, a cabinet can have glass or mirror inserts or have a decorative metal pattern (art forging).
Advantages and disadvantages
How to position the bed correctly
The main advantage of built-in furniture structures is that they allow you to free up space for free movement around the apartment. The transformable type of furniture has the following advantages:
- Multifunctionality. The assembled built-in bed can be a closet, a cabinet, or a sofa.
- The built-in or folding design allows you to hide the sleeping area from prying eyes in a one-room apartment.
- Such furniture increases the functionality of the room. For example, folding beds installed in the bedroom when assembled make it possible to use the room as a living room, and single beds in the children's room allow you to free up space for games and receiving guests.
- Various engineering and design solutions make it possible to use built-in furniture in an interior of any stylistic orientation, regardless of whether it is assembled or disassembled.
- Folding built-in structures are equipped with a special belt fastening system, which allows you not to clean the bed before assembly.
- Orthopedic and anatomical mattresses can be placed on folding and built-in models.
- The ability to assemble the bed allows you to better monitor the cleanliness of the room.
The disadvantages of this type of furniture include the following factors:
- High price. Beautiful, high-quality and, most importantly, safe built-in furniture cannot cost as much as simple free-standing furniture. The cost of high-quality and reliable fittings that ensure the operation of the mechanisms plays a large role in pricing. Installing a built-in sleeping area will require changes to the interior, which will cause additional costs.
- A folding double bed can have considerable weight, so it will only be assembled occasionally, for example, before cleaning or receiving guests.
- There is a high probability of injury in case of improper operation or malfunction of assembly mechanisms or spontaneous opening of folding furniture.
- If you plan to install a folding bed in the room, the wall must be properly reinforced. Folding beds are not attached to plasterboard or other temporary partitions.
Advantages and disadvantages of a built-in bed
What is a built-in bed? Why was it invented? The answers, it seems to me, are simple. This is where ergonomics, or the field of knowledge about convenience and comfort in human life, comes into play.
A built-in or folding bed is a bed that, due to a lifting mechanism, rises to a vertical position, adjacent to the plane of the wall.
Crowding is a pressing issue. Interior designers together with furniture designers helped solve this puzzle. They came up with and introduced into production built-in versions of stocks or transformers, which are functionally no different from ordinary ones. At the same time, the loss of living space in apartments is excluded.
This option can be easily recessed into a wall niche or cabinet. Using lifting mechanisms, it can be easily tilted vertically or placed in a horizontal position.
The built-in bed allows you to save space even in a small room
Advantages:
- Space saving
- Multifunctionality
- Ergonomics
- Ease of use
- Durability and reliability
- Stylistics and modern design
Flaws:
- High price
- Mounting to main wall only
- Daily disassembly and assembly
- Fear of unreliable design
One of the main disadvantages is the fairly high cost.
Bed-wardrobe in interior design ideas
Bed under the ceiling installation description
Each wardrobe-bed model is made in a specific style, which fits the specific dimensions of the room. For small rooms, furniture in the style of minimalism, loft or hi-tech is perfect:
High-tech style wardrobe beds are distinguished by their great functionality, practicality and non-standard design. Such models will not only be an excellent place to relax and place things, but also decorate the room itself, since the design is always made with the addition of shiny or matte surfaces.
For medium-sized rooms, designers advise purchasing bed cabinets in Provence, Modern or Country style:
- People who prefer classics, airy shapes and good quality materials can safely take a wardrobe bed in the Provence style. This model will have clear lines and shapes. As a rule, such models have a built-in vertically folding bed with two wardrobes on the sides, which can be supplemented with built-in cabinets. Also, such models have a beautiful and voluminous headboard, which can be attached to the wall or to the fake inner wall of the cabinet.
- A country style wardrobe bed is different in that it must be made of solid wood (linden, pine, mahogany) or with the addition of metal. This model has distinctive characteristics such as strength, reliability and durability. For a medium-sized room, this model would be an excellent option.
For large and spacious rooms, large wardrobe beds are suitable, capable of dividing the space into zones. It can be Baroque, classicism or rococo style:
- From the very name of the Baroque style, you can understand that such a wardrobe-bed will be full of delights, it may even have decorative stucco molding, and most importantly, it is made of high-quality materials (fine wood, high-quality metal alloys, durable and beautiful upholstery material). Very often, such models are made to order so that the room has a harmonious atmosphere that can be changed depending on the time of day.
- The Rococo style is not complete without its frills. Its distinctive side is the presence of rounded and soft shapes with gilded or antique elements. These could be “shabby” handles on a cabinet or on a pull-out bedside table.
Most designers are convinced that if there is no idea what style of furniture you need to choose for a room, then it is better to choose classics. A classic wardrobe-bed will delight you with its practicality, functionality, simplicity of shape and color scheme, which will fit absolutely into any room design.

Advantages and disadvantages of a folding bed
Beds with a reclining mechanism have the following advantages:
- Ergonomics. During the daytime, the bed is folded, without cluttering the room. If necessary, it can be unfolded in a few seconds and become a full-fledged sleeping place.
- Functionality. Folding beds are almost always equipped with a variety of hidden and open storage spaces: drawers, pencil cases, shelves and sections. They can also replace a bedside table. In addition, the design may include a table or sofa.
- Ease of use. The beds' mechanisms allow them to recline, roll out and disassemble in just a few effortless movements.
- Durability and reliability. Folding beds are made of durable materials and high-quality fittings, and their mechanisms are designed for frequent unfolding and folding, which ensures a long period of operation.
- Modern design. When unfolded, the bed looks stylish, and when folded, it is completely camouflaged and is a decorative or functional part of the interior.
A folding bed built into a closet and a folding table help save precious square meters and combine a relaxation area with an office or living room.
The disadvantages of the design include the following:
- High price. It is made up of high-quality materials and mechanism, and therefore choosing too budget options may be unsafe. It is also worth considering that a folding bed is a whole complex containing hidden and open storage spaces, which if using a regular bed would have to be purchased separately.
- Lack of constant free access to the sleeping area.
- Risk of injury due to careless use or system malfunction.
Note! The structure can only be installed against a load-bearing wall, as otherwise the surface may not withstand the load, which will lead to the collapse of the bed.
Types of structures and transformation mechanisms
Bed with extra bed
According to the type of mechanism for lifting and unfolding, wardrobe beds have 2 options: gas and spring system:
- Gas shock absorbers have gas inside, which, in turn, presses on the piston, due to this, the bed lowers smoothly and slowly, without the risk of dropping it on itself. Such a wardrobe-bed will please you with its long service life, but the price for such quality is appropriate (you will have to pay a little more than for the above mechanism).
- The design of the spring release mechanism itself is simple and easy to use. The springs are stretched by the weight of the bed, and thus it lowers to the floor. As experienced craftsmen say, such a mechanism will last less than a gas one, since frequent use of the spring causes the curls to weaken and become deformed over time, so such a transformer costs much less.
Based on the design of the folding mechanism, there are vertical folding wardrobe beds and horizontal folding ones:
A vertical folding bed is much more practical and convenient in its functionality. This is due to the fact that during the day it hides in the closet, freeing up a large space for the work area. Very often the closet is equipped with built-in shelves, cabinets or a full-length mirror
It is very important that the wardrobe-bed stands on a flat surface (sometimes you have to level the floor), otherwise, due to skew, the wall-mounted folding mechanism may jam and work poorly
There are improved 3-in-1 models, where there is a closet itself, a small sofa, a prefabricated one with a bed in the middle (or on the side). This option is very practical and functional in that at night there is a full-fledged sleeping bed, and during the day there is a small corner sofa and a large, spacious closet. For very small rooms, a tilt-and-turn or swivel bed is suitable. The principle of operation of such a folding sleeping box is very simple: thanks to special fastenings, you need to turn the main body and pull it out towards you. In the usual assembled state, this is an ordinary cabinet with books or necessary things arranged.
Types of solutions
The bed in the wall itself is a general concept. This may include different design options.
With their help, a children's room, bedroom, and also a guest room are equipped.
There are 2 categories according to placement method:
- Horizontal
. These are mainly single and half beds. Installed along the wall; - Vertical
. Placed across. The height almost reaches the ceiling. Double models do this more often.
Also, a folding or folding bed can be:
- with a vertical type of lifting mechanism, and mounted in a cabinet where the headboard is against the wall;
- with a horizontal mechanism, where the bed stands sideways to the wall;
- sliding halves of the wardrobe-bed that cover the assembled structure.
Beds hidden in the wall are:
- single;
- one and a half;
- double;
- three-bedroom;
- two-tiered.
The kit includes a spring or foam mattress. There are also polyurethane models.
I propose to consider several designs separately.
Folding
Very popular bed models due to their practicality. Suitable for small rooms, and also help to combine the bedroom with the living room or children's room.
Folding structures are divided into vertical and horizontal.
It is also interesting that folding beds are often made by hand due to the relative simplicity of the design.
Built-in
The beds are mounted in the closet. Such products are distinguished by the number of sleeping places.
The point is to open the closet doors, lower the bed with lifts, and get a full-fledged sleeping place. The headboard remains as if inside the closet.
Hidden
It is considered the most effective and original way to remove the bed from view, but at the same time have a full-fledged sleeping place in the room.
For this purpose, a special recess is made in the wall. Usually in depth it corresponds to the height of the bed without taking into account the legs. There may be no legs or they may be foldable.
The lower part of the bed is decorated to match the interior of the room. As a result, it seems as if there is no sleeping space in the room at all. Everything blends into the interior.
Transformers
The peculiarity of such furniture is that it includes several different elements at once.
The main structure is the bed itself. But when folded, a storage system, a set of shelves or drawers, a spacious and roomy closet, as well as other solutions are formed.
Advantages and disadvantages
A folding modern bed that is built into a closet is a convenient device. Thanks to this element, you can fully use the space of the living room or bedroom, which are often cluttered with large products. Advantages of this model:
functionality - due to the presence of a special mechanism, the bed can be unfolded at night and assembled in the form of a cabinet during the day; large size - when folded it has dimensions of 1.4x19 meters, when unfolded it occupies almost 2.5 square meters of the total area of the room; beautiful design - the outside of the cabinet can be decorated to look like wood. If you need stylish models, you can purchase products with patterns, designs, colors and other decorative elements; you don’t need to constantly tuck it in after sleep, just fasten your underwear with special belts and put the place to sleep in the closet; makes cleaning the room easier. No need to constantly crawl under the bed to remove accumulated dust; There are models designed for both one and two; This model can be easily installed in children's rooms. Models available that are designed for small spaces
These elements will be convenient for children, because for a children's room it is important to preserve more free space for play; the base of folding upholstered furniture can be vertical and horizontal; children's products can have beautiful drawings from children's cartoons and other favorite characters; Installing this product allows you to save almost 50-70% of the living room space.
However, in addition to its advantages, this type of cabinet may also have disadvantages:
- high cost - these models have a high cost, which is much higher than the cost of ordinary beds;
- a very problematic installation that requires special care;
- some are afraid to purchase this product because they think that its mechanism may work spontaneously and the structure will simply fall out of the cabinet.
Advantages and disadvantages of transforming cabinets
A bed that transforms into a closet has many advantages, but it is not without its disadvantages.
Product advantages:
- Practicality of use. An ordinary bed gets dirty faster, since the mattress must be constantly cleaned or vacuumed, and the bed washed. With a transformer, this needs to be done less often, since it is hidden in the closet most of the time.
- Additional functions. The design contains a workplace, an area for children, a closet, lamps and fittings.
- Saving space in the room. The transformer can be taken out at the right time, so there is more space in the room. This is convenient when the family has small children or the apartment is not large in size.
- Combination with the interior of the room. The design easily fits into most designs. Manufacturers have taken care of a wide variety of colors and appearance of furniture facades.
- You can assemble the structure yourself. To do this, you need to find a drawing of the model you like and buy the necessary material.
Flaw:
- Price. The transformer costs much more than the standard model.
When purchasing such a product, you need to take into account all the pros and cons.
Folding bed-wardrobe in the interior
Self-installation
A folding bed can be installed by professionals who assemble furniture. But this is usually not cheap, and if the owner has the necessary tools and basic skills, you can install the bed yourself. Assembly instructions are included with each bed purchased by the manufacturer.
The sleeping place has three main structural components, the fastening of which requires special attention. The base, which is fixedly fixed to the wall, must be very strong, since the hinges and the bed are heavy
A fixed base is attached to all surfaces: walls, floor and ceiling. It looks like a hollow niche.
Nuances of self-installation
Installing a transformable bed has some nuances:
- The vertical plane on which the structure is fixed must be very strong, with a thickness of at least 2 bricks. If the wall is plasterboard, the fasteners must be long so that they pass through the plasterboard and the concrete and brick wall to which they will be attached. If the fastening is not done securely, the box may come off the wall at the most inopportune moment and lead to injury to people.
- If the furniture is made of chipboard, it is better to strengthen the base with metal corners or wooden boards. Mainly the vertical pillars of the box are strengthened.
- To securely fasten a bulky structure, you need to ensure that all surfaces are smooth, without distortions. In some cases, before installation, you need to level the floor and walls so that the bed stands securely.
Sometimes they make the built-in stock themselves. If it is not difficult to make the box and the sleeping place itself, then the lifting device must be reliable, and it is advisable to purchase it from the manufacturer. A self-made mechanism is not always reliable, and since the bed structure is heavy, it can cause many injuries if it falls. The structure should be lifted and secured with ease and fixed for the required period of time.
Securing the mattress
The frame for the sleeping place itself can be made independently from metal corners, chipboard or plywood. To prevent the mattress from slipping when the bed is folded, you need to make a small edge along the edge or secure it with slings and belts. The mattress should fit tightly to the frame. If necessary, it should be easy to remove. Materials should be light and durable.
Operating principle of the lifting mechanism
The lifting mechanism is the main element in the equipment of transformer models. Each double bed is equipped with a similar element
It is worth paying attention to one important nuance. The complexity of the mechanism directly affects its reliability
This must be taken into account when choosing a multifunctional bed.
Depending on the principle of operation, there are three types of mechanisms:
- manual - reliable and durable. In order to turn a transformer with such a mechanism, for example, into a closet, you will have to use your muscles. A double bed will require significant force to move into an upright position. In a vertical position, the stock is secured with a special hook;
- spring - a very simple mechanism in design, which ensures its reliability. The main thing in such a mechanism are springs, which tend to stretch. They will have to be changed every few years. If models that turn into a wardrobe are equipped with a manual mechanism, then a spring mechanism allows you to turn the bed into a sofa;
- piston - the basis of such mechanisms are gas elevators. Furniture equipped with them requires no effort for transformation. A good option for a children's room. But such solutions are expensive and are not always of high quality.
Lifting mechanism installed in a double bed transformer
Simple lifting mechanism
Lifting mechanisms
Standard single bed options weigh more than thirty kilograms. Doubles are even heavier. It is difficult to lift such a weight from a horizontal to a vertical position without special devices.
Reliable mechanisms have been developed for this:
- Individual springs
- Gas elevators
- Gas spring blocks
Such mechanisms help to easily raise or lower the bed.
The most inexpensive type of folding mechanism is spring
Spring mechanisms are cheaper in terms of price. Disadvantage: they are noisy and require constant additional adjustment. Gas systems are more expensive. But their attractiveness is that they run smoothly and are silent.
The budget option is manual lifting, using special clamps.
The bed structure is a supporting box that is attached to the main wall. Plus, a base with an orthopedic mattress attached to it. The supporting box is made of wood, giving rigidity to the entire structure.
In order for the bed to fit into the interior of the living room or bedroom when assembled, the bottom on the front side is refined. There are ways to do this: install a mirror; decorate with facades made of natural wood or MDF. Another way is to install a rack, or shelves, to place books, accessories, and interior elements.
You can install a mirror or facade on the lower part
Assembly sequence
This process can be divided into 2 main stages: assembling the frame (cabinet) and making the stock.
Stage 1. Drill the prepared chipboard parts under the confirmations so that the sidewalls are the external parts, and the ends and stiffeners are the internal ones. To do this, holes are drilled in the sidewalls in the plane of the parts with an 8 mm drill, at a distance of 9 mm from the end cuts (for the upper and lower parts) and at the same distance from the rear long side in the places where the stiffeners are attached.
Immediately install the resulting structure in the designated place. Fastening to the wall is carried out using anchor bolts using reinforced corners 60x60 mm. When installing with a level, check the verticality of the structure. Strengthen parts of the lifting mechanism inside the box. Fastening is done using self-tapping screws.
Wardrobe-bed diagram.
Stage 2. The key to successful manufacturing of this part of the structure will be the accurate measurement and adjustment of its parts. The width of the mattress binding must be provided in advance so that its surface is slightly higher than the frame boards.
Assembling the mattress box is carried out according to the same principle as for the cabinet. Holes for confirmations are drilled in the planes of the side boards and at the ends of the head and foot of the bed. The bottom of the box can be made from a furniture facade or laminated chipboard. The lower, reverse side of the bottom will serve as the facade of the wardrobe-bed when assembled. Here you can strengthen a small shelf for souvenirs, handles so that the folding bed can be conveniently unfolded, and decorative fittings that will make the panel resemble the front of a cabinet.
On the outer surfaces of the sidewalls, in marked places, the mating parts of the lifting mechanism should be installed on self-tapping screws. Attach the folding legs according to their design. Connect the parts of the lifting mechanism and place the mattress on the bed.
After this, you need to adjust the bed with a lifting mechanism so that in working condition its legs are on the floor. To do this, the bed with the mattress is placed in the sleeping position. If it does not lower enough and the legs hang without support on the floor, then a board or chipboard of suitable size and weight is additionally reinforced under the mattress so that the folding bed can be folded out completely under its own weight.
When installing a home-made bed, the main attention should be paid to securely fastening the box to the wall. You should not skimp on fasteners, since when using a mechanism with gas springs, the force of their compression can tear out a box that is not firmly installed and lead to injury to a person on the stock
Types of lifting mechanisms
The system for transforming built-in beds can be varied. You should definitely pay attention to this factor when choosing a suitable model. Any mechanism consists of several parts, the force of which depends on the size of the bed and its material. The designs include swivel legs, shock absorbers, and fastening elements on both sides of the mattress. All fittings wear out and become loose over time, so they must be inspected periodically. Several types of mechanisms can be used in the configuration of folding beds.
Spring
The design is driven by separate springs and built-in blocks. The tension of the mechanism can be adjusted based on the weight of the bed. The structure will be durable if the load is calculated correctly.
The work of the springs is to smoothly unfold the transformer and slow down the removal of the mattress from the body. The universal lift operates using a system of coiled springs. Metal elements bear the main load. Average service life is up to 5 years.
Gas
The most comfortable and easiest to use lift. Powered by gas shock absorbers that completely absorb the load. Power units have metal plates, a gas lift, and steel axles. When giving preference to this type of mechanism, it is necessary to study its design and safety rules, since the gas shock absorber runs on nitrogen.
Iron plates are attached to the cabinet and bed and are located around the axis of rotation. During descent and ascent, the plates move along the axis. The load is distributed evenly thanks to gas elevators. Human participation in this process is minimal; children can easily use the structure. The advantages of such a mechanism include the following factors:
- Quiet operation;
- Durability of metal parts and rubber gaskets;
- Lightness, ease of movement;
- Minimal risk of injury;
- Huge range of models.
The disadvantages include the unaesthetic appearance - part of the mechanism is visible at the headboard. If parts fail, repair difficulties may arise due to the lack of ability to replace elements or the high cost of work.
Hinged mechanism
The bed is unfolded with the application of certain efforts by a person, which is why the mechanism on hinges is also called manual. The simple option is not suitable for everyone, since it involves manually moving a heavy structure. Due to its features, it is the least popular.
The absence of auxiliary parts complicates the process of lifting and adjustment, but significantly increases the strength of the mechanism. Simple hinges are mounted at the head of the bed; when tilted into the closet, the mattress is secured with latches.
Key points when buying a transformable bed
It is advisable to buy beds that retract into the wall as a complete set. This way you can avoid the need to combine the bed with furniture that is already in the room. In the finished headset you only need to select the size.
Before going to the store, you need to take measurements of the room in which the furniture will be installed. You need to know the width of the walls of the room, the dimensions of the area on which the bed will be placed. You should make a plan for installing the cabinet in which the product will be folded. You should find out as much information as possible about the manufacturing plant: how long has it been supplying products to the market, what customer reviews are about it.
How to create your own furniture masterpiece
First of all, checking the drawing, you need to cut out all the parts from the chipboard using a jigsaw. The resulting furniture parts can be immediately coated with furniture varnish, or this can be done after the assembly is completed. Experienced craftsmen recommend pre-painting, and after completing the assembly, use only polish.
In process and production
Assembly
The parts are ready, now you can connect them together:
First, the cabinet box is assembled. The side, top and bottom parts are connected to each other with self-tapping screws (it is recommended to lubricate the joints with any wood glue to enhance strength). The resulting box in the corners is reinforced with corners. Now you should take care of the height above the floor. A low cabinet height will force the mattress to be anchored too low and the bed will not be very comfortable. The resulting structure is attached to the wall using dowels. The fastening must be as strong as possible, because the frame with the mattress is quite heavy
It is very important that the frame is set strictly at level; misalignment when installed to the wall will cause a malfunction in the operation of the lifting mechanism. If mezzanines or side tables are planned, they are assembled and installed at this stage. The doors are now being installed
This can be done at the final stage, but craftsmen recommend installing them before the lifting mechanism is installed - this makes it easier to tighten the door hardware bolts and adjust the doors to open smoothly. If the furniture has not yet been painted, now you need to varnish it. Next, the bed frame is assembled (you can use a ready-made one from an old bed, making additional sides for it). The frame must have sides, a headboard and provide for the possibility of rigidly securing the mattress. Externally, the frame looks like a box with blank sides, the bottom of which consists of lamellas. The frame is also varnished; folding or retractable legs are installed on it in the foot part.
Installation of the lifting mechanism
The most crucial moment. Extreme precision is required here, otherwise lifting the bed will require significant effort. Before installing the selected lifting device, you must carefully read the attached installation instructions. But there are several general rules for installing all lifts:
- First, the parts of the lift are attached to the surface of the cabinet, and then to the frame. The height of fastening the parts is calculated as follows: subtract the height of the cabinet legs from the height of the bed legs, put the resulting size on the inside of the furniture, and the depth will depend on the thickness of the mattress.
- Do not attach the lift parts to all the screws at once. Beginners may have problems with level installation and will have to rearrange the fasteners. It is recommended to secure the structure onto 4 furniture corners and try folding and unfolding the empty frame several times and closing the doors. If everything works without effort and nothing prevents the doors from closing, then you can tighten the remaining screws.
Decoration
Handles are installed on the cabinet doors and decorative trims are glued. It is recommended to hide the screws on the outer surface under the decorative trim.
The resulting product is coated with polish. After installing the mattress with bedding, it can be used for sleeping.
The tutorial on how to make a bed that folds up against the wall is simple. The most critical stage in it is only the adjustment of the lift parts for its smooth operation, but this can also be dealt with if you follow the installation instructions. But upon completion of the work, you can get significant space savings due to the retractable bed and beautiful furniture in the interior.
Kinds
The practical folding bed is available in different types. This could be an ordinary sofa, built into a closet, a roll-out bed, for children. But to understand what the types of these models are, it is worth considering the types separately.
Sofa cabinet
This type of product contains three elements at once - a folding place to sleep, a sofa and a wardrobe. This design will complement the sleeping and living rooms. For children, this model will be especially convenient, since it will save a large area of the room, and all the toys, things, and accessories can be collected in the closet.

Wardrobe bunk bed
This option is installed in children's rooms. It is also called invisible, because when assembled it is not visible at all. After assembling the entire structure, the appearance of the wall is obtained.
Advantages of the model:
- has high functionality;
- the presence of lockers around the structure allows you to store a large number of things;
- you can place two children - above and below;
- Beautiful design;
- Can be converted into a sofa. To do this, it is enough to remove the upper tier, and decorate the lower tier with the help of pillows and bedspreads in the form of a sofa.
Types of folding beds
Folding beds can be with vertical or horizontal lift. In the second case, there remains free space above them, which can be occupied by storage spaces. There are also models with sliding halves, the elements of which hide the spread bed.
It, like standard models, consists of two main elements: a frame and a mattress.
According to the size of the sleeping area, beds are divided into:
- single;
- one and a half sleepers;
- double;
- king size, allowing three people to sit comfortably;
- two-tier.
The unfolded bed rests on special folding legs that can withstand heavy loads.
According to the type of mechanism, beds are divided into:
- Roll-out. The design is made of several sections, which unfold gradually as they move out of the box. The mechanism can be placed in any facade and does not take up much space. The working part of such models occupies the lower level, leaving the upper one free. The direction of movement and speed are controlled using the remote control, since the mechanisms are electrified.
- Folding. When assembled, they look like the front of a cabinet. To unfold, you need to pull the top edge of the box and lower it down. When unfolded, the box is based on legs.
- Swivel and tilt. Externally they are similar to rotary models, but work on a different principle. In this case, the racks on the back side of the bed will remain in the same position at all times. The control is remote, so it is important that durable alloys are used for fastening systems.
- Combined. This is multifunctional furniture that combines a bed, wardrobe, drawers and shelving. Some models can be transformed into a sofa in between.
Note! Tilt-and-turn models require quite a lot of space, since when rotating the cabinet opens to one side.
Which are put away in the closet
Such beds are built into the body of any furniture set, usually a wardrobe. Most often, a bed with a folding mechanism is placed in a wardrobe. When disassembled, the headboard remains partially in the closet. To avoid blocking adjacent furniture with cabinet doors, models with triple doors are used. Each of them is equipped with a separate guide, which allows them to be moved to a single extreme position.
A cabinet box is a special element into which the structure is built.
into the wall
Hidden built-in beds when folded are practically indistinguishable from the wall surface. They are attached to it, and therefore the wall must be strong enough. The design involves the presence of a small niche or box surrounding the folded bed.
When not unfolded, they represent a continuous façade. Lifting is carried out thanks to pneumatic springs.
On the reverse side, such models can look like the front of a cabinet or a shallow shelving unit. You can decorate them with paintings and even attach a TV, the main thing is to fix them securely. You can also place a large mirror on the outside, which will visually enlarge the space.
It is often installed in living rooms to provide additional sleeping space when guests or relatives arrive.
