Types of modern, simple and beautiful gates for a private home

When choosing the type of fencing for the private sector, gates occupy a key place. The final cost and installation time of the entire fence depend on the complexity, opening method, and material.

A gate for a house is a mandatory element of a yard where there is a car. With a modern assortment, each owner will be able to choose those that are suitable specifically for his site. If you have experience in construction, then you can buy the necessary set of materials, fittings and assemble the gate yourself.

Classification by opening method

There are two types. Let's look at each of them in more detail.

Automatic

Due to ease of use, an automatic control system is often chosen by owners of country houses. To regulate the work, the owner does not even have to leave the house or car. Opening and closing occurs by pressing a key on the remote control. When there is a power outage, the gate can be opened using a regular key.

Automation can be installed on sliding and swing versions. The gate is mounted nearby.

Modified models have built-in sensors that respond to the machine's signal, and no pressing is required.

Most manufacturers guarantee trouble-free operation of the product for 25,000 cycles.

Automation allows you to use the gate regardless of weather conditions. All models have a stylish and interesting design, which each owner chooses to suit his taste.

Disadvantages: high prices and likelihood of counterfeiting.

Mechanical drive

Such designs involve manual opening with a key or by turning a special lock. Often used for swing gates. The constipation is purchased together with the main design or made to order.

There are two popular types of mechanical constipation:

  1. Vertical. The sliding mechanism provides reliable fixation. A lock with a handle is placed between several metal rods.
  2. Horizontal or latch. More popular type. Suitable for any gate. A retractable lock is placed between the metal bars in a horizontal position.

There are different types of mechanical locks on sale that are suitable for gates:

  • screw;
  • crossbars;
  • grooved

Such locks are equipped with an overhead mechanism, which is mounted to the frame and enters the base at the bottom.

If the design consists of two doors, then one lock will be required for each of them.

Types of swing gates

Swing gates are popular because they require almost no additional maintenance during operation. If we are talking about a classic design, then it has two doors that are fixed to the support pillars. When considering the types of swing gates, we should distinguish bisexual and combined.

The second type of swing gate has a built-in gate, so it is often used for garages, warehouses and small summer cottages. This design can also be classified according to its material of manufacture. Swing gate types can be:

  • wooden;
  • metal;
  • made of polycarbonate;
  • forged.

Materials for production

The choice depends on the raw materials of the main part of the fence, the design idea and the financial capabilities of the owners.

Tree

Wooden gates with a wicket are a harmonious addition to a large house made of fresh logs. Combined with elements of carving and forging.

The wood must first be thoroughly treated from moisture, insects (antiseptics, impregnations), fire (fire retardants). Such protection will significantly extend the service life of the structure without loss of appearance.

To highlight the beauty of the natural texture, as well as protect the wood from environmental influences, we recommend that you read the following articles:

  • Rating of wood antiseptics
  • Variety of wood impregnations
  • Protective wood coating for exterior use

The materials for wooden gates are often:

  • fence;
  • edged board;
  • timber

Among the advantages of wood:

  1. Natural and environmentally friendly raw materials.
  2. Assembling the elements is simple and quick.
  3. A beautiful type of material, which is complemented by figured carved elements.
  4. Repair individual parts without harm.
  5. No expensive tools or equipment are needed for installation.

Disadvantages of wood - limited service life due to exposure to moisture and other external factors. Repeated treatment with protective solutions will be required after 3-5 years.

Corrugated sheet

With skillful fastening, gates made of corrugated sheets will become beautiful and durable. These are profiled steel sheets with a galvanized protective layer. Sold in different colors.

Advantages of corrugated sheets:

  • a light weight;
  • ease of installation;
  • low price;
  • choice of color coating;
  • long service life;
  • resistance to external factors;
  • does not require maintenance.

No significant shortcomings were found, but some owners believe that the profiled sheet does not look beautiful.

There are not many such people, so corrugated sheeting is becoming increasingly popular among residents of the private sector.

Users often search for:

  • Brand of corrugated fence
  • How to screw a corrugated sheet to a fence

One type of profiled sheet is Euro picket fence. These are metal profile strips with a protective decorative layer, a successful imitation of a wooden fence. Euro picket fence is a good basis for a modern fence that will look beautiful and reliably protect the site.

Forging

Forged elements are an addition to the finished structure. The use of transparent gratings with forged patterns is rare, since not every owner wants his yard to be visible. To prevent the yard from being visible from the street, the fence is often lined with polycarbonate sheets.

Forging patterns is difficult. This requires skills and equipment. It’s easier to buy ready-made elements or order from specialists.

Artistic forging is considered the most expensive and elite decoration, since all stages of the work are performed by hand by a craftsman.

Among the advantages:

  • strength;
  • resistance to moisture, temperature changes;
  • combination with other materials;
  • long service life;
  • forging according to individual sketches.

The main disadvantage is the high cost.

Wrought iron will have to be periodically treated with anti-corrosion agents.

Standardization of sizes

There are no clear restrictions on the choice of opening dimensions, but it is recommended to follow generally accepted provisions:

  1. The dimensions of the gate should take into account the width and height of the car, taking into account the side mirrors, and it is better to be 1 m more than this figure.
  2. When determining the width, it should be remembered that the width of passenger cars is somewhere around 1.5-1.7 m, SUVs - 1.7-2 m. The minimum opening for entry is 2.5 m.
  3. The dimensions of the gate are selected depending on the number of pillars and the dimensions of the frame.
  4. If the area of the site allows, then leave a width of 4 m for the entrance; for a gate, 1-1.2 m is enough.
  5. The doors are not placed close to the ground, otherwise in winter it will be difficult to open when frozen. An indentation of 15–30 cm from the bottom is made.

You should not install a gate that is too large, since the hinges simply will not withstand such a load. The recommended height is 2 m. If you need a higher sash, you will need to secure a crossbar between the posts - this will increase rigidity and protect it from deformation.

Rail gates

In private homes today you can see different types of gates. Among them, rail ones should be especially highlighted. This design has the form of sliding panels. If you decide to replace the old gate with the new one described in this section, you will need a distance of 0.5 m from the fence. Among other things, there must be a free, flat space along it, which is equal to the length of the sliding panel.

Rail gates can also be cantilevered. Depending on the type of panel fastening, such structures can be rail-mounted, hinged, or on casters. The canvas in all three varieties has the same principle of movement, the only difference will be in the technical device. Rail types of garage doors are popular for several reasons, among them the following should be highlighted:

  • ability to withstand the weight of any skin;
  • the impressive length of the panel covering the passage;
  • high level of resistance and resistance to wind loads.

However, before installing such a structure, it is necessary to take into account the disadvantages. They consist in the fact that the opening must be well strengthened. During operation, the groove in which the rail is installed must be periodically cleaned. The profile, which is located in the ground, under the influence of precipitation and the external environment, will deform over time and change its original linear dimensions.

General tips for making and installing gates with your own hands

  1. The initial stage is planning. Involves the development of an accurate design diagram. You will need to draw both a whole fence and a gate with a gate separately, calculate the amount of materials, the location of parts, and draw up an estimate. If you do not have the skills to develop documentation, then it is better to order a project along with a construction permit from specialists.
  2. A solid foundation will have to be poured under a heavy, massive fence. This is especially true when the pillars are brick or stone.
  3. To build a frame for the gate, it is recommended to take metal pipes with a cross-section of 60*40, with a wall thickness of 3 mm or more.

  4. Metal cutting is done with a grinder at an angle of 45 degrees.
  5. A budget alternative to metal is a frame made of wooden beams. This is done when the gate is sheathed with lightweight materials.
  6. Frame parts are reinforced with metal corners and spacers.
  7. Welding areas and all seams are thoroughly cleaned, degreased and treated with an anti-corrosion primer.
  8. Heavy gate leaves are equipped with three hinges on each side; for light ones made of corrugated sheets, two hinges are enough.
  9. The location of the hinges determines which direction the gate or wicket will open.
  10. When sheathing the sashes with corrugated sheets, the sheets are laid overlapping across the wave, secured with roofing screws. The color is matched to the tone of the material.
  11. To avoid injury, the material must be taken with rolled edges.
  12. If the roof of the house is made of corrugated board, then a fence made of the same raw materials will look very harmonious.
  13. It is better to take a little extra material for cladding, in case of unforeseen mistakes or damage.

The size of the frame must correspond to the parameters of the sashes. If the frame turns out to be a little larger, then you can correct the mistake by welding small patches. But if the frame is made smaller than required, it will have to be cut with a grinder and re-digested.

Types and design features of entrance gates

The entrance gate is an extremely important element of the fence; quality and aesthetics are of paramount importance when choosing. The most popular types of gates are: sliding, overhead, sectional, swing, etc.

Gate classification

Products are classified according to the type of material, purpose and principle of their action. The most common material for making gates is metal, followed by wood. Owners most often choose metal products as garage structures.

There are 4 main types of gates:

  • recoil;
  • swing;
  • roll;
  • sectional.

Other subspecies:

  • double-leaf;
  • single-leaf.

Advantages of metal products:

  • ease of installation;
  • high level of security;
  • strength and reliability;
  • long service life;
  • resistance to various types of precipitation.

Advantages of wooden structures:

  • low cost (boards, rails and other materials are relatively cheap);
  • installation requires a minimum of tools;
  • light weight;
  • aesthetic appeal.

The disadvantages of wooden products include the following factors:

  • fragility;
  • low mechanical strength;
  • fire hazard;
  • low level of security.

Types of swing gates

There is a wide variety of gates available on the market, the types and types differ in functional characteristics, material, design and other parameters.

Mechanical and automatic

Mechanical structures are in greatest demand. Gates are used to enter the site, in garages, covered parking lots, etc. The design of swing structures is carried out in accordance with the main fence of the house or site.

The wings of the gate are suspended on hinges that are attached to the side posts. The opening angle of the sash is up to 90-100°. The products are opened manually and equipped with a lock and connecting bolts.

Main elements of the gate:

  • supporting metal frame;
  • racks for fastening frames;
  • doors with protective coating;
  • electronic device (for automated types);
  • portal valve;
  • loops.

The leaf leaf can be made of the following materials:

  • stainless steel;
  • tree;
  • other.

To open the gate using a remote control, hydraulic electric cylinders are attached to the wings. One part is attached to the post, the other to the gate wings. If there is no power, the mechanism turns off.

The motor, which is necessary for remote control operation, can be attached to a support or foundation fence, or hidden in the housing.

The structures are controlled using an automatic device and a remote control system.

Metal and wood

For the manufacture of metal swing gates, single- or double-layer smooth steel sheets are most often used. The cladding of the lids can be made of sandwich panels or a welded lattice structure.

The shape of the loops may vary in different designs. The main function of the loops is to ensure ease and smooth movement of the web.

Unlike mechanical swing gates, automatic ones provide comfort and ease of use.

Wooden swing products can be installed with your own hands. The process of manufacturing and installing products consists of the following stages:

  • drawing, calculation and design planning;
  • selection and receipt of the necessary material;
  • installation of stands;
  • installation of a metal frame frame;
  • installation of wings.

For the production and subsequent installation of swing gates, the following tools are required: a welding machine, a grinding machine and a wheel.

Installation process:

  1. The first step is to assemble the metal frame. A rectangular welded structure is manufactured (standard dimensions are 3000×2000 mm). To create the frame, a profile pipe with a section of 60x30x2 mm is used. To make a metal frame, you will need a welding machine and skills to perform simple operations.
  2. Step 2. Installing supports to secure the frame. A 100x100 mm pipe profile, concrete columns or bricks are used as supports for fastening the canvas. To create a foundation, fill the hole with the prepared mixture to a depth of 1 m. Reinforcement is performed and a profile pipe is placed in the middle of the support. Metal pipes are concreted at a depth of at least a meter. To erect brick columns, a concrete base is made at a depth of at least a meter. After pouring, allow the mixture to dry (within 7 days) so that it is dry and hard.
  3. Step 3. Installation of frame and sashes. First, a profile tubular section measuring 50 by 50 mm is made. Then the wings are welded to the rectangular frame. After completing work on the frame, grind the welds with a grinder and weld the hinges.
  4. In the fourth step, the seams are prepared and welded to the frame.

Types of sliding gates

Sliding structures are in great demand, they save a lot of space and are very practical in everyday use. They are installed on private property, in public institutions, in industrial zones and other areas.

Products are mainly made of steel, sometimes aluminum (however, this option is more expensive). The least common are cast iron. It is best to order sliding products individually in order to correctly adjust them in height, width and select the appropriate type of filling for the fence used.

Gate design and styling

Depends on the taste and capabilities of the owners.

An important condition when choosing decor is compatibility with the façade of the house and the roof. When choosing colors it is also worth considering this factor. Contrasting tones are allowed.

Sometimes the poles are supplemented with street lamps, adding brightness to the estate at night. The doors are decorated with small carved figures, forged patterns, and interesting designs. Lovers of minimalism limit themselves to selecting exquisite material for the gate, without using unnecessary decorations.

Below are different design styles in which you can design fence structures.

Loft

A strict direction that many associate with unfinished renovations.

The main features of a loft:

  • rough, unpolished wood;
  • brick pillars;
  • concrete slabs without finishing;
  • metal without painting.

The color scheme is predominantly dark tones of gray, black, brown. Playing in contrast is allowed - red with black, white with brown. The lines are simple, without patterns.

Gates in the loft style are rough doors made of wood and iron, reminiscent of the doors of production workshops.

Modern

Vivid examples of fence structures in this style:

  • made of aluminum horizontal profiles;
  • forged openwork, ornate elements;
  • metal multi-colored doors.

The main requirement is wavy, winding lines, angles, plant motifs.

In the Art Nouveau style, forged sliding gates are most often created, which are distinguished by their modern design and long service life.

So that what is happening on the site is not visible, the background of the forging is made of polycarbonate sheets, wood, and corrugated sheets.

Provence

The fence is decorated in an antique style. This is an example of a harmonious combination of stone and wood.

It is recommended to lay out the pillars from sandstones and limestones in warm colors.

Granite won't work. The stones should be reminiscent of the origin of the style - the southern French coast.

The doors are covered with wood and painted in the following colors:

  • lilac;
  • turquoise;
  • lilac;
  • beige;
  • light green.

The fence should give the impression of an old structure. Scuff marks are deliberately left on the surface. It is allowed to use forging - simple elements without patterns. Garden plants in pots are hung on sections or climbing roses are planted around the perimeter.

An example of Provence is a gate made of wooden picket fence, painted white on stone pillars.

High tech

A direction that is designed to show a successful combination of minimalist details and expressive design.

Suitable materials for creating sashes:

  • pipes;
  • polycarbonate;
  • Rabitz;
  • gabions;
  • steel sheets;
  • terrace board;
  • aluminum parts, profiles;
  • wood with emphasized structure.

The pillars are erected from metal, concrete, and well-polished stone.

For cladding, it is better to place pipes, boards or profiles in a horizontal position, emphasizing the originality of the solution. For high-tech, it is appropriate to purchase ready-made paneled structures.

The working process

For a successful final result, you need instructions for installing the gate yourself. If the weight of the gate is normal, then the choice of metal poles made from pipes is considered optimal. Their diameter averages about 80-100 mm.

A profiled pipe with a similar diameter is also suitable. This type of support elements copes with the task perfectly.

The following installation methods can be distinguished:
  • clogging;
  • concreting.

If we are talking about the first method, then the depth to which the pillars are driven is 1.2-1.3 m. This type has its advantages. Among them, reliability and speed of work are of particular importance.

You should drill the hole you need. This should be a depth of half the future depth of the pillar. Columns should be installed in the wells. You can hammer them in with a sledgehammer or impact head. At the same time, pay attention to the verticality of the stand.

The next step is to attach the posts to the fence posts. Then you need to weld the hinges. Designate a place for this in advance.

After this, you should hang the doors on the hinges. At the same time, the correct convergence of the elements to the central part is checked. The second installation method is concreting.

This method increases rigidity as well as stability. This method will require the use of heavy and wide sashes.

Reinforcement is not carried out. You will need a reinforcing glass. The workflow steps for beautiful homemade gates look like this:

  • drilling The diameter is about 200 – 250 mm, the depth is about 1.9 mm;
  • prepare sand and crushed stone, they will be needed to fill the bottom of the hole. The components should be compacted carefully, each layer should be about 100 mm;
  • the pillar is installed directly on a bed of sand and gravel;
  • It is worth pouring the solution around its area. Until it hardens, it is important to install the post vertically. Use supports as anchors.

You can use a reinforced structure for installation. In this case, installation work is carried out in the same way as without the use of reinforcement.
