Interior design in the loft style is one of the most popular today. The main features of this style are a maximum of open space, a minimum of finishing materials, the use of brick and concrete in combination with designer furniture.

Loft design
Lots of light, air and open space - this is how you can describe the main features of the loft style in the interior. Therefore, a room with high ceilings and panoramic windows without curtains or curtains is ideal for it.
First of all, it is important to decide on the concept: it can be a “marshmallow” loft in pastel colors, a brutal dark location, a retro loft with brick walls or a techno space with plasmas and light music.
In the interior of a loft, decorative plaster is often used; monochromatic and deliberately careless is best. Other popular finishing materials are metal, concrete and wood.
When decorating a loft, it is important to preserve the atmosphere of an abandoned factory with concrete walls, massive doors and antique windows.
Wooden interior
Wooden elements will complement and highlight the interior of the loft. These can be wooden beams under the ceiling if it is high enough. Also, wooden cabinets and racks for accessories will fit perfectly into the interior of any loft.
You can make wide wooden window sills along the windows - this will not only become a decorative element, but will also add seating to the room. In addition, if the windows offer a beautiful view, such a window sill will become a cool photo zone. Functionality is one of the hallmarks of the loft style.
Children's loft design
Children's lofts are characterized by a large amount of light and space, and the use of pastel colors in the design of the room. The loft style will be preserved due to the rough finish, while the interior will become more delicate thanks to light colors.
The design of a children's loft should include bright elements: these could be soft ottomans, colorful pillows on comfortable sofas. It is better to avoid sharp corners and choose round tables so that the children do not get hurt during active games.
Set aside part of the space for a children's corner with a dry pool and a photo zone with large plush toys. If space allows, you can install inflatable slides and even small trampolines indoors.
Examples of cute children's loft designs can be seen here.
Toilet and shower
The toilet in the loft is usually decorated in the same style as the main rooms. Water pipes and hoods are left open to emphasize the industrial feel. The space under the sinks can be designed in an original and creative way, for example, stylized as barrels or pallets - roughly knocked together wooden boxes.
If you want to make the design lighter, decorate the space with small potted plants, wooden baskets, and elegant soap dishes.
Shower cabins in a loft are usually simple and discreet - rectangular models look best. Wood and stone are perfect for wall decoration.
Ladder
If the loft is two-level, it is better to choose a simple metal staircase for the design. Vintage stairs without excessive decoration will look beautiful.
You can see design ideas for two-story spaces in this collection.
Design of a small apartment in loft style
It is quite difficult to bring an industrial loft into the interior of a small apartment, because this style requires large areas. But you can always use individual elements and expressive details.
A small apartment even more urgently needs competent zoning: for this, use those same inserts of bare concrete or brickwork. And paint the rest of the walls with a plain matte emulsion in light shades.
It is better to replace large loft lamps and spotlights in a small room with a series of point sources. You can leave the ceiling and communications untreated - at the same time this will save valuable centimeters of space.
Do not overuse plasterboard partitions, screens and curtains. Loft tends to have an open plan, which is in many ways much more convenient in a small apartment.

Modern types of loft style
Designers distinguish three main types of modern lofts: industrial (classic), glamorous and bohemian.
Industrial
This is the most brutal, “masculine” and at the same time the most popular style in the loft interior. Metal, concrete and wood become the main materials in the design of the room, and vintage elements emphasize the free and creative atmosphere.
There is little furniture in such lofts; it is practical and functional. There are also few accessories and decorations - they all only emphasize the minimalism of the design. The main colors in the design of an industrial loft: gray, brown, burgundy. The prototype of this style is an old factory with brick walls and massive furniture.
Glamorous
A glamorous loft is characterized by a softer and lighter interior. In addition to industrial colors, pastel colors and bright elements are used, which makes it similar to the French style - Provence.
Exquisite decorative details often include floor-length mirrors in vintage frames and live plants in unusual pots. Beautiful watches and forged metal figurines can decorate a glamorous loft. The decor will also be complemented by massive lamps on the ceiling or walls.
Bohemian
Bohemian style is the most comfortable interior option. Its main feature lies in the combination of loft and classic style. Industrial finishes are complemented by sophisticated soft furnishings. Often in such spaces there is a large bed, a comfortable sofa or soft chairs.
Rough walls are decorated with paintings; along one of the walls you can place a rack with figurines and antiques or aged items. The space is illuminated by vintage lamps without lampshades.
The bohemian style is reminiscent of the grunge style, which is characterized by a combination of brutality and luxury in the interior. However, bohemian style still strives for greater simplicity and practicality.
Types of loft style
Main directions:
- Hard loft: the interior fits into an existing building.
- Soft loft: the building for a loft is designed specifically.
- Commercial: industrial spaces with ceilings of at least 5 meters are suitable for development; they are mainly created for business and office space.
- Residential: a loft-style interior is created exclusively for living space.
By interior style:
1. Industrial,
or
loft style “industrial”.
It is typical to completely leave all the attributes of a factory workshop: high concrete ceiling, rough wooden beams. Under the ceiling there are communications: parts of a metal frame, wires. Pipelines, air ducts, hoods, chains, wires, valves are visible. In some places the decoration is deliberately rough, the brickwork of the walls is not hidden in any way. Concrete walls are usually simply coated with a special compound. Reclaimed floorboards or concrete surface coated with clear varnish, on which a fluffy rug or hide has been thrown.
Minimalism in furniture and interior items: metal shelving and countertops. Bare lamps without a shade on long wires. Mostly dark shades, but can be diluted with light spots of color in the form of a carpet on the floor. Harsh. Nothing superfluous, too bright, much less cheerful.
But! The latest technology and equipment. And natural fire, in its natural beauty, in a fireplace or stove, potbelly stoves, metal barrels are possible.
2. Glamorous.
The exact opposite of the previous point, in color scheme. Unconventional shade combinations. Pastel colors contrast with raw gray concrete walls. Bright colors are acceptable.
Any interior item here is an art object. Full of fashionable, exclusive or vintage exquisite items. This is where you can see how the loft is “liberal.” For example, Provence in a kitchen block. Ornate and luxurious baroque - in the dining area. Light, elegant rococo in the bedroom.
Such an apartment is an expensive, exquisite toy. The choice of modern people.
3. Bohemian loft.
A haven for artists, musicians, performers.
This is expressed in interior items - elegant, beautiful, perhaps not new, with different styles and movements of art. Paintings, figurines, musical instruments, rare utensils, dishes and other details. And all this within the framework of a classic loft space. Here you can hold your own exhibitions and organize social events.
An original home, a workshop and a fashionable salon in one.
Furniture
Since the main thing in modern loft design is the feeling of spaciousness and air, there should not be too much furniture. Typically, a white or beige wooden table, a large soft sofa, simple chairs, wooden shelves with books, cabinets and bookcases are selected for the interior of a loft.
Furniture for a loft interior should first of all be functional and practical. It is convenient when tables can be connected to each other and divided depending on the type of event. Wooden blocks that can be used as chairs or low tables will also come in handy.
In an industrial loft, furniture in basic colors will look great: white, black, beige. Designer chairs of unusual shapes and colors will fit perfectly into the interior.
Using wooden or metal shelving, you can divide the space into several thematic zones.
To add coziness, you can place light or bright ottomans on the floor: orange or light green elements will look great in a black and white loft.
If you decide to decorate your loft in a bohemian or glamorous style, then choose a luxurious double bed with voluminous bedspreads and pillows.
Basic colors of loft style projects
The color palette emphasizes the features of the loft style. The interior is dominated by concrete, brick, metal, and wood. Hence, in a traditional classic loft there are predominantly neutral, natural shades: gray, brown, silver, metallic, white, black, beige, terracotta, etc.
There are shades “with a touch of time”: darkened or grayish orange, red.
The classic colors of the loft style are black, white and gray.
The white loft style looks interesting and impressive. The brick walls are covered with white paint, the ceiling and floor are also in white or light colors. The space visually expands, so the white color in the loft style is also suitable for small apartments. But keep in mind that you will need very good lighting. In such an interior, bright color spots or pastel combinations would be appropriate. And if you use contrast and use black window frames, furniture frames and other interior items, then it will already be a classically black and white loft style.
Lighting
To decorate a room in the loft style, spacious locations with large windows are most often chosen, since good lighting is very important. Plastic windows are painted and stylized as antique, curtains and drapes are either not used at all, or thick and heavy models in gray, burgundy, and beige are chosen.
There should also be plenty of artificial light sources throughout the room. It is better to select objects of the most laconic design - white or black metal lamps, chandeliers without elaborate shades, lamps of an original design, as in the photo, are suitable.
For the most minimalistic options, the light bulbs can be left without lampshades at all - this is economical and will fit perfectly into the concept of the place. Simple track and LED lamps are also suitable.
For glamorous and bohemian locations, choose large, sophisticated chandeliers and unusual floor lamps in the steampunk style, elegant wooden or marble wall lamps.
Glamorous loft in Montreal, Canada
Architectural bureau Les Ensembliers reconstructed and modernized three floors of this Canadian apartment in 2010, which is located in a former refinery building. The building has now been tastefully converted into a modern apartment building. The three-level apartments have a clear division: the living room on the upper level and the bedrooms on the lower levels are united by a kitchen-dining area located on the middle level.
Living room in loft style
High ceilings and large rooms create a feeling of open space. The central part of the entire apartment is the internal staircase, which connects all three levels of the apartment. The predominant color of the interior is black, but thanks to the huge factory windows that let in plenty of daylight, the rooms feel bright and airy. The glossy, almost mirror-like surfaces of many designer pieces of furniture, selected specifically for this project, also play a big role here. But upholstered furniture, decorative pillows and carpet, on the contrary, are matte and soften the atmosphere with the feeling of softness that they create, as well as muted bright colors.
Books as a decorative element
The apartments are decorated in an industrial style, although the luxury furniture used in the project is not typical for this style. Metal and glass surfaces contrast with decorative textiles and exotic artwork, especially in the living room.
Doors
Barn sliding doors will look very cool and stylish in a loft interior. If the doorway does not allow you to install them, you can limit yourself to an ordinary wooden door, stylized as antique.
For loft design, doors of basic colors are better suited: brown, white or gray. If the interior does not have bright details, the door can become such an accent - in this case it can be red, orange, purple. The main thing is to choose a model with a deliberately rough texture.
Accessories
Despite the brutality and restraint, the loft style is difficult to imagine without interesting interior items that become bright accents of the design.
Rough brick or concrete walls of a loft can be decorated with paintings: still lifes and landscapes are definitely not suitable, but abstract watercolors or black and white geometric images will look very cool. You can also hang a photo, for example, a triptych - three paintings united by one theme. It may depict an unusual plot or plant motifs.
Floor mirrors will fit perfectly into the loft interior: depending on the chosen concept, they can be in gilded vintage frames or made in a modern style, for example, dressing room mirrors with light bulbs.
To decorate a loft in a retro style, you can allocate part of the space for shelves with antique car models, and decorate the space on the wall around with decorative license plates and road signs.
Bicycles, motorcycles, vintage watches and unusual designer items will also help make the loft interior creative and memorable. A carpet on the floor can be an interesting accessory, but it needs to be selected very carefully: single-color or two-color models, for example, with a geometric pattern, are suitable.
Live plants are often used to decorate a loft-style room - it is important to choose vases with a minimalist or bright, unusual design.
A hammock or a wicker hanging cocoon chair made of rattan will add style and comfort to the loft, and guests will probably want to relax and take photos in it.

Potbelly stoves, characterized by high thermal output, ease of installation and removal of the chimney, can be a good alternative to labor-intensive fireplaces. Moreover, if we are not talking about classic interiors, but about a more democratic loft or modern style. In the crisis year of 2015, potbelly stoves, the appearance of which, of course, had undergone serious changes since the October Revolution, became in demand again. Home owners appreciate such stoves for their compactness, affordability and stylish design.

Classic loft and high ceilings with wooden beams are two inextricably linked concepts. In rare cases, when creating a loft space, you, of course, can do without beam structures, limiting yourself to some simple finishing. Wooden ceiling beams in apartment and house renovations in combination with concrete masonry and natural wood parquet flooring make it possible to create that very authentic loft, characterized by brutality and a very free handling of space and decor.

A potbelly stove in the attic, concrete walls in the staircase hall, wooden ceiling beams, a barrel instead of a sink, a green shipping container, lamps hanging from the ceiling, a desk-machine - the design of the house inside embodies the loft in its pure, authentic form. In such interiors you can safely study the features of the style direction. A creative space with a cinema hall, a small library and a potbelly stove in the attic will be appreciated by artists and simply intellectuals, for whom there is no greater pleasure than sitting in a cozy armchair with a favorite book or, imbued with nostalgia, watching a favorite film.

Walls
Brick walls are a classic option for the loft style. It’s great if the building itself is built of red or white brick. If desired, an imitation of brickwork can be made using decorative panels from a hardware store or gypsum plaster and a special template.
Often only one of the walls is made of brick - it becomes the brightest part of the interior, and the other three are treated in a different style.
Bare concrete walls in a loft interior can look cold and inhospitable, but this can be corrected by decorating them with decorative elements and placing racks of accessories along the walls.
Paint or decorative plaster are also very common options for wall design in a loft; such coatings are less demanding to maintain than brick and wood. This is a great idea for neutral walls when the emphasis is on one brick wall. Loft is a deliberate negligence, which means it is not necessary to ensure that the material lies perfectly smooth on the walls. Roughness and unevenness will add charm to the room.
Wooden boards are also a common element of wall decoration in loft interiors. Visually, the wood should not look carefully processed, which is why barn, unedged or used boards are most often used for the walls of lofts. Wood will add coziness and warmth to the room, without depriving it of its brutality.
Features of the loft style
In order to create an interior design in the loft style, you need to understand its features. The main ones are:
1. The layout should be as open as possible, for example, kitchen-living room, living room-bedroom. Enclosed rooms should be the bathroom and toilet.

2. Large windows or even panoramic windows are welcome. They should not be cluttered with curtains. They are often left open.

Plants
Living plants refresh the loft interior and become a beautiful decorative element. If space and ceiling heights allow, then you can choose palm trees, ficuses and pachira in large pots - they will go perfectly with the brutal texture of the loft.
If the ceilings are not so high, citrus trees will do: orange or lemon, which look very aesthetically pleasing. They also have a pleasant aroma.
On shelves and shelves you can place pots with small plants: these can be Kalanchoe, Echeveria, Phalaenopsis or any other succulents of your choice. These flowers are unpretentious, do not require special care and look very cute.
Textile
You can not use curtains in the loft at all or choose heavy and dense models. Another option is to hang Roman blinds or roller blinds that roll up quickly. Avoid tacky designs, flowers and ornaments - plain models in dark or light shades will look much more stylish.
In general, when choosing textiles for a loft interior, it is better not to use multi-colored items. Choose pillows with geometric patterns, thick knitted wool blankets, and voluminous bedspreads.
Give preference to leather, wool, velor, natural or eco-fur - simple but stylish materials that will not “reduce the cost” of the interior of the room.
Bright loft
Pastel colors visually increase the space, so this design is suitable for both large and small rooms. A loft in light colors looks best with sufficient lighting - the place is filled with air, the interior seems light and soft.
The main colors in the design of a light loft are white, milky, light gray and beige.
Light colors are suitable not only for walls and ceilings, but also for floors. Choose a laminate with a seamless structure or natural wood.
We recommend adding a few bright details to the interior of a light loft: mint-colored accessories, light green ottomans, red chairs. It is very important not to overdo it: the abundance of bright elements will visually make the space bulky and tasteless. Choose an interior item that will become a “fixation point”—an element that attracts attention. For example, if the “fixation point” is a large brown leather sofa, it is better to choose beige for the rest of the furniture so that it differs in color from the decoration, but is not too noticeable.
We have this selection of light lofts with an original design.
Dark loft
When choosing a black loft concept for your design, it is important to consider that dark colors do not expand the space. This style is more suitable for a spacious room, otherwise there is a high risk of turning the location into a cellar.
For the floor it is better to choose light wood. If you decide to make a black ceiling in the loft, then it is better not to paint it, but to decorate it with wooden beams so that the room is not too gloomy and oppressive.
One wall can be left white and decorated with a large dark abstract painting, a series of black and white photos or graffiti.
With this design decision, it is better to abandon bright accessories so that the location does not look tasteless. Give preference to beige and gray accents.
A fireplace will fit perfectly into the interior of a dark loft - it will add sophistication and comfort to the room.
Check out how these cool dark lofts are decorated.
Ceiling
It is desirable that the ceilings in the loft be high. In small rooms, you can make a stretch ceiling that imitates metal - it will turn out stylish and original.
The most budget-friendly idea for a loft ceiling is raw concrete. In combination with light or red brick walls, modern appliances and furniture, it will look very fashionable.
Paint or plaster are excellent materials for loft ceiling design. They will make the ceilings visually higher, and these options can also be combined with longitudinal wooden beams to emphasize the industrial style.
A wooden ceiling is an original idea that will look cool in almost any loft. There are many options: there are designs with a ceiling made of boards, timber, or a slatted ceiling that can hide flaws in the coating and give the interior originality.
Fireplace
An interesting design solution would be a fireplace in a loft interior. If the building allows it, it would be great to have a real wood-burning fireplace. In urban environments, you can choose an electric fireplace with a living flame effect or a bio-fireplace. The difference between them is that in an electric fireplace the flame is artificial, and in a biofireplace it is real, but both options do not require a chimney and installation permission.
The fireplace can be corner, built into the wall, front, floor or hanging - choose the most suitable option taking into account the characteristics of your room.
It is important not only to choose the right fireplace, but also to create the right atmosphere around it. Start from the basic concept of the loft: in industrial lofts, a brick chimney and a massive aged metal door would look more appropriate, while providing visual access to the fire.
In locations with a lighter interior, the fireplace can be made of light materials, decorated with stucco and gilded elements.
Next to the fireplace you can place a couple of cozy armchairs and a small table for drinks - as in the photo.
Veranda in loft style
If your room has access to a veranda, it is important to maintain a single concept and decorate it in a loft style. As in interior spaces, this design implies conciseness, originality and echoes of industrialism.
High ceilings, brick or plastered walls, open communications - all this should be present on a loft-style veranda. The material for the floor will be light natural wood. It is also better to finish the ceiling with boards, timber or slats.
People go out onto the veranda of the loft to get some fresh air and socialize - it is important to create a light and cozy atmosphere and not clutter the space with cabinets, shelving and other furniture.
On a large veranda you can place one wooden table and several chairs in the same style. If space does not allow, choose a glass table and several wicker chairs. A hammock and live plants will also create a relaxed atmosphere in the interior of the loft veranda.
To illuminate the veranda, you can use wall lamps or lamps hanging from the ceiling with warm light lamps.
Furniture in Loft interior
The loft style is not characterized by a clutter of furniture, so a large amount of it can oversaturate the room and make it tasteless. You can use both old antique furniture and new modern furniture, where plasma would look appropriate. The main thing is that it should be functional and complement the overall picture of your interior. Furniture can be made of the following materials: leather, wood, glass and metal. For example, for a dining group you can choose a table made of solid wood. Instead of closed cabinets, you can use clothes hangers. And in the bathroom you don’t have to hide the plumbing pipes - this will only complement the interior.

Attic
Decorating the interior of an attic in the loft style is an excellent solution. Attic floors are very reminiscent of attic spaces, and the loft style originated in them. Large windows fill the room with light and air, so you can choose both light and dark styles for your attic design.
Natural wood is perfect for wall decoration. One of the walls can be decorated with brickwork. Decorate it with original paintings and photos, attach a few simple shelves on which you can put books or figurines. Wall lamps are ideal for lighting.
A simple but stylish bed or a large leather sofa looks good in the attic interior. Place a small rug, plain or with a geometric pattern, on the floor next to them. Add some live plants to freshen up the space.
Loft-style apartment – photos of real interiors
It’s hard to capture all the versatility of the loft in one go. Therefore, we offer you a whole selection of photographs with completely different apartment interiors. Perhaps you will find something for yourself among them!
Bar counter
Many lofts have stylish bar counters that fit perfectly into the concept of the room. If you have a small loft, a bar counter can replace a table and save space - it combines practicality and aesthetics.
The materials from which the stand is made should be combined with the overall design. It can be brick or glass; a wooden tabletop also looks very impressive. In a loft there is no need to grind it, polish it or cover up cracks in it - all the roughness will highlight the creative interior.
Don't forget to choose high bar stools made of wood or wood and metal for the counter. On the front of the bar you can place an atmospheric inscription made of light bulbs.
We wish you to create the interior of your dreams in your loft!
